Old Port of a Fortress Town
Location: Woudrichem, Netherlands
Date Taken: 16 Sep 2016
Camera: Nikon D5000

Woudrichem is one of Dutch fortress towns that once protected the countryside from invaders, like the Spanish in the 16th and 17th centuries and the French in the latter half of the 17th century. Thick earthen ramparts still surround the town and its gates are guarded by a pair of vintage cannons. Without the cars parked on the streets, it would be hard to tell which century it is. The old brick houses on cobblestone lanes give Woudrichem that medieval feel.

An Ideal Town
Location: Zamość, Poland
Date Taken: 26 Aug 2011
Camera: Nikon D60

Philosophers and urban designers had always dreamt about creating an ideal town. Italian architects also worked on the concept during the Renaissance but it was in Zamość that the idea was fully implemented. An ideal town was supposed to be functional, safe, resident-friendly and beautiful. This is precisely what Zamość was like with its clear urban layout, rationally designed public facilities, erected in a uniform style and guaranteeing safety to its residents thanks to fortifications. Simply an ideal town!

Valdice Tower
Location: Jičín, Czech Republic
Date Taken: 17 Sep 2015
Camera: Nikon D5000

Valdice Gate was one of the three towers that were part of the city's fortifications. It was built in 1568 on the remains of an older gate from the 14th century. The gate burnt down several times and after the last blaze it was increased in height by a storey with a viewing platform and a flat for the tower keeper. Today the tower is considered to be the main symbol of Jičín.

Old Town With Tiled Roofs

Tallinn is an intoxicating mix of ancient church spires, glass skyscrapers, baroque palaces, appealing eateries, brooding battlements, shiny shopping malls, rundown wooden houses and cafes set on sunny squares – with a few Soviet throwbacks in the mix, for added spice.
