New release this morning from my personal collection...

As Sea to Shore
by Terrill Welch
Size (h w d): 11 x 14 x 0.02 inch
Medium: Acrylic on gessobord panel
Available at: https://www.artworkarchive.com/artwork/terrill-welch/as-sea-to-shore

The tide licked at my heals twice and I was obliged to move up the sandstone bank in order to complete this quick plein air sketch. Yet, it is all part of it - as sea to shore continually changes.

I did this sketch in the fall of 2015. I sometimes think about doing a larger work but then I get lost in my enjoyment of this particular moment captured here and I sigh and set it aside. So today it is asking to go out onto the world stage in search of a new home.

All the best of a summer Sunday to you!

All done. Today's work is a completion of yesterday's plein air where I was back on site at Shavasana Art Gallery & Café for the same time. The painting will now dry over the next few days and I shall paint the edges and hopefully have it back for display on Thursday as requested. Final photograph still to follow. So here we are with....

"Summer Seas" resting 14 x 18 inch oil on canvas

There are days that make us feel as if summer will last forever. This is one of those days.

Special thanks to George for all his support and to everyone who dropped in while I was painting. You are the best! :)

Land, seas and sky have been my longest, most enduring and greatest love. The next four paintings added to the daily website additions of paintings showing in "West to East Coast Canadian Landscapes in Paint" that opens today, are good representatives of this lasting relationship between the elements and paint on canvas.

Of all the paintings in the solo exhibitions, these ones bring to mind the abstract construct of owning land and the complexity of celebrating the 150 years of the Canadian Confederation. In order to celebrate one must, I believe, have a conversation about what it means to start counting Canada's birthdays only from 150 years ago when people have been known to live here for about 12,000 years. In fact, Canada's first peoples were the only ones to live here less than 500 years ago. Yet, unlike Europe, there is little surface evidence of these lives lived in harmony with the land, sea and sky (though not necessarily with each other). From more than 500 years ago, on our west coast shores, we can easily find middens, or possibly ancient clam gardens, maybe even fragments of pottery but that is about it. The land, sea and sky were altered very little by human beings for thousands of years before what we now call Canada became a country.

The Canadian government's treatment of these first peoples is deplorable and it is a situation that is still in the progress of being appropriately acknowledged and addressed. Which means that on this 150th birthday of Canadian Federation there are also protests, and rightly so. As a white, European descendant born and raised in Canada, I have a responsibility to this land, our first peoples and to the Confederation of Canada to keep my ears, my eyes, my mind and my heart open as we celebration Canada this weekend. I may get it wrong. In fact, I am not sure how I might ever get it right but this doesn't lessen my responsibility. I still must hold space for this conversation, because how can one claim to have a lasting love of our land, sea and sky without such? If you would like to know more about our lengthy history on this chunk of land, Goldi Productions Ltd's website Canada's First Peoples is a start at http://firstpeoplesofcanada.com/fp_groups/fp_groups_origins.html

Mayne Island shores are featured in the next four paintings added to the daily website additions of paintings showing in "West to East Coast Canadian Landscapes in Paint" that opens Canada Day weekend.

Scale is difficult to depict online with paintings. Look closely at the size for the two paintings that seem similar. Hanging in the gallery this is obvious but here, not so much.

Today's feature painting.... "Long Beach Vancouver Island June 2013" 48 X 24 inch oil on canvas

There is nothing like a long stretch of sand on the west coast of Vancouver Island with the water and mist rolling at the same tempo. Untamed wanton desire whips up our wild side with such grace and ease we gasp, we cry and we laugh like the gulls.

At Coon Bay, Galiano Island, B.C. yesterday. It is even more beautiful than the last time I was there 27 years ago. Didn't even mind the heavily overcast skies. Brought out a handful of painting references for later. #GalianoIsland #GulfIslands #westcoast
