Roadside sights on Moloka'i
No billboards here, the one-lane road to Mo'o'momi

More from Moloka'i's western and northwestern beaches - including the rocks of Mo'omomi and the expansive but empty sand of Papohaku, 'here' and @http://www.fenichel.com/beaches.shtml .

More Hawaiian islands in Google collections (Maui & Big Island) -and still more photos/islands @http://www.fenichel.com/hawaii2.shtml

More immersion in Moloka'i, "the friendly isle", can be found on my own tribute page to Moloka'i, which also includes some videos of authentic hula and local music plus my mini-tour of Kalaupapa peninsula: a slide show with soundtrack by Lono and tour of Kalaupapa trail and colony by Buzzy Sproat. All that can be found at http://www.fenichel.com/molokai

Aloha!

Aloha Moloka'i! Happy Coffee Day!

Sept 29 is National/International Coffee Day. While B.I., Maui and Kauai also produce fine coffee - Kona being the most famous - Moloka'i also has perfect conditions for wonderful coffee. Here are some of the coffee berries used for COH's "Muleskinner" roasts, which have won numerous cupping awards.

This year's big cupping competition and festival comes to Holualoa on Nov. 3.
Enjoy some wonderful coffee today, wherever you may be! Aloha.

Dixie Maru Sunset

As the sun goes down west of Moloka'i, there is still time for a last swim and then on to a luau. Straight from my go-anywhere amphibious camera (Pentax WG-3), no manipulation. This is how it looks!

Memorial and Grave of Sister Marianne Cope

Sister (now Saint) Marianne Cope arrived at this remote isolation colony (Kalaupapa) in 1888, shortly before the death (from 'leprosy') of Father Damien. This was a place of despair for 1000's of 'patients'..

Sister Cope came from New York,  sent as part of a small contingent of Franciscan Sisters of Charity. On Kaluapapa her assignment was to administer the Charles R. Bishop Home for Girls. She also managed a boy's orphanage at the nearby Kalawao settlement, an effort she carried forward from Father Damien. Sister Cope worked alongside Brother Joseph Dutton, who arrived to assist the ailing Father Damien, and administered the Baldwin Home for men and boys. His grave is nearby Father Damien's at St. Philomena Church in Kalawao settlement.

Several excellent books & films (E.g., "Molokai") document much of the despair, fortitude, and daily struggles for faith.

You can see more images of the churches and Father Damien's grave here (collection and album) and more Moloka'i photography (plus videos w/local music) @

Flowers above St. Marianne Cope (Kalaupapa)

This is only a fragment of the whole scene, but I enjoy this burst of color and light, seeing it now onscreen. The location is Kalaupapa, the isolated "leper colony", subject of "Molokai" (book & movies). A flat peninsula surrounded by some of the world's tallest sea cliffs, people were once dropped off boats into the sea here.

Still home to the few remaining victims of "Hansen's Disease" (more respectful name than "leprosy")  the churches and graves give testament to faith, suffering, and the community ministered to by Father Damien and Sister Marianne Cope . They both attained Sainthood after devoting their lives here  ministering to the spiritual and physical needs of the abandoned and forcibly interred.

Photo taken as I looked upwards, standing near Sister.Cope's Grave.

As the sun sets on the first week of 2016...

Here's one last sunset for now, from Papohaku (Moloka'i), finally pulled from my camera and computer.

Google seems to have  pulled together several "albums" and posts (including private ones) and created a fairly large album/collection "here" (Google + land) . This one I've never posted before. Many others not in this collection/album - and some videos too (from hula and mule trails to a 16' docu-slide show of Kalaupapa)  -  are all @ http://www.fenichel.com/molokai

Papohaku Sunset,  Moloka'i

Beyond the bramble - just sand, blue water, sky and sunset.
Some other sunsets with dramatic additions (like lava rocks and palms) are in my G+ "album".but yet to be collected "here.  But click on the photo & I think you'll see that large album. (Start at beginning)

Beach Bramble at Papohaku

Say that 10x fast! After carefully walking through some unusual bramble, up ahead is one of the longest (and most deserted) sand beaches on earth: Papohaku. I have more from here by day, but - not yet in Google-land -  all I've posted from this spot are at:   http://www.fenichel.com/topside.shtml

A large collection of Moloka'i images & some videos too, including a 16-minute documentary slide show with wonderful music from Lono, is at: http://www.fenichel.com/molokai

Aloha!

Mo'omomi

Pulling out some favorites from the first multi-image post. I love this image and place! This was taken by my "toy" (military spec) amphibious Pentax, in "HD" mode. No post-processing here, straight from the camera. More in the now-hidden G+ Molokai "album" and @

Something from Moloka'i, which had the song "Wild Horses" playing in my mind. More from topside and the Kalaupapa Peninsula (and trail) is 'here' (Google) and @ http://www.fenichel.com/molokai
Suggested soundtrack: https://youtu.be/SQTHB4jM-KQ

Or,  nearby,  here's a horse of a different color:
