Meet Elsie

Part 2: (One of the best things about our trip to England was finding family waiting for us. This was a really special trip for us as we met our two youngest grandchildren for the first time. In this post I am simply wanting to share with you, my dear readers a couple of photos I took of them. They are absolutely wonderful children.)

This was taken with my little vintage Russian lens, the Helios 44-2, which is my favourite for portraits, especially for black and white.

Michelle Cooking

An evening meal with friends is one of the greatest pleasures we can have. Wonderful food, interesting conversation, warmth and laughter. Nothing makes you feel as good on a long drive home as the feelings that linger. Thank you, Michelle and Kyle. It was a lovely evening.

Both portraits in the post were taken with the vintage Helios 44-2 lens

"MY BABY!"

This beautiful dog, named Zoë really seems to be saying in no uncertain words "This is my baby"! I was visiting my friend with her tiny, gorgeous new baby, Scarlett when I met her lovely, year old dog Zoë for the first time. She was boisterous and determined to jump all over me in her excitement. For the first time I tried out the famous "don't look at her, don't talk to her, don't touch her" trick of the Dog Whisperer (Cesar Milan). We both were amazed at how quickly Zoë relaxed and calmly sat to watch me. She was still and quiet while I moved around, letting me take her photograph (she didn't see my eyes looking at her behind the camera), while little Scarlett and her mum chatted with me. After she calmed down (Zoë I mean) we had a good pat as her reward!

I love those eyes that look at us with warmth and wisdom.

I'm so sorry that I have neglected my postings lately. I have been very busy after my bout with the flu' helping with the Camera Basics mentorship. I hope to get back to resume my regular programming once the mentorship is over in a couple of weeks!

We Two Are One Three

A little while ago we were asked to provide a recent photograph of ourselves. It was supposed to be taken out of doors (it was cold at the time!) and to show some context, with Steven's workshop in the barn. We tried different places that we thought might work but nothing seemed ideal, so in the end we decided that the doorway to the workshop would be the best location. We set up the camera on the tripod and discussed how we thought we should be standing. I didn't want to be bundled up in a winter coat, tempting though that was, so settled on a light jacket. Steven wanted Joni in the photograph and asked me to hold her while he set the camera timer and ran back to his place in the scene. Joni really did not want to stand still and was squirming so much that I was forced to let her go as the shutter clicked leaving two blurred figures out of three.

Take Two

"Forget Joni", Steven said and so we prepared again and he ran back. As he did so I called her name once.  She ran straight up to me and sat as you see her. As the shutter clicked she had just begun to turn her head toward the camera, but at least she is shown here as part of the family and not blurred. The Kennard family at home!

My Two Boys

Rupert, our Cornish Rex cat has always had a special love for Steven and will sit at his feet at every meal and wait for a moment such as this when he can be snuggled right next to his face. Often Steven, even when he's holding him is a bit distracted, but at this time I caught them both lost in each other. Rupert is 14, the cat with the sweetest personality we have ever had (and we've had a good few) and seems to need that close connection and affection more than ever.

I have decided not to take part in a BW project as such this year, but want to continue working in black and white and monochrome where the subject seems right for it, as in this one.

Yuri Kobayashi and "Curio"

I saw Yuri at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine. She was intent on her work but didn't mind me taking this picture of her. You can see a piece of her work "Curio" and the detail of it, posted here. I loved the way she looked, her intensity and at the same time her obvious ease as she worked at the machine. I wanted to capture a portrait of the artist at work, but also to share the art she is creating.

This was taken while I wandered around the property as Steven was setting his things up for the course he is teaching.

Head in the Clouds

Sitting alone at this counter in a great little café in Halifax, this man was engrossed in his work. Sometimes you don't see what is right in front of your eyes.

Last night after the big screen special showing of all of the "Life's Work : Conversations with Makers" videos,we found ourselves back in the same café with our good friends +Michelle Yorke and +Kyle Cunjak. It was great to catch up with them over tea and snacks. We don't see them enough. It was a wonderful turnout at the screening and the Q&A afterwards was fascinating.

Did Someone Say the Lighting With Intent Mentorship is Starting Soon?

Brent and I are really excited that tomorrow I am going to be starting this mentorship with the master of lighting, +Eric Raeber. This should be a wonderful period of learning and we have an amazing group of people lined up ready to explore the mysteries of lighting in photography. I am looking forward to being able to understand and use new techniques to make better use of lighting in my photography, including portraits. This was taken, as he was sitting waiting for his supper, so cute in his little leather jacket.

Brent is the son of good friends of mine and his expression shows perfectly the wonder and excitement I feel waiting for tomorrow's very first lesson to arrive in my inbox.

Sophia

Sophia is like a flower. She brightens up the room just as flowers do, by her very presence. She is full of light and love and joy with her direct, trusting gaze and that little smile that played around her rosebud mouth when she looked up at her beloved Dadda.

We met Sophia only yesterday and she touched our hearts. What a sweetheart.
