The Bradley Hut next to Truckee, CA, USA

It's Sunday morning, tourists are heading back home, we are eating a huge breakfast while checking the map one last time.
Apparently parts of the highway are closed, the road to our hike is also closed... We are snowed in and avalanche risks are considerable. :-S
Plan B: the Bradley Hut, less steep, less miles, less risky. We're not giving up!

Goodbye, Bradley Hut

What goes up must come down. Although we were hoping to have a nice packed track to follow back, luck was not on our side. Visions of pizza, pitches of golden beer and the chance for shower propel us onward.

Sleeping in the Bradley Hut, CA, USA

Our sleeping space on the 2nd floor. Luxury accommodation in this weather!
Listen to the wind howl in your comfy sleeping bag. Maybe this was worth it :)

Drying Clothes in The Bradley Hut

Sweaty smell clothes drying near the fire. Our nice warm cabin now smells like a locker room full of goats. <3

The Bradley Hut's Bathroom

At the entrance door, there is a sign:
"Please pee on the right - snow for drinking on left". No need to go far away. With all this snow, it would be an expedition. The easiest way is to open the door, climb the snow step, make sure snow doesn't fall inside too much, and close the door behind you. A bit weird, but very practical!

It may look like Tom, here, didn't read the sign properly and is getting snow for water from the right side. That would be so bad! In fact, he is throwing out water we used to cook our dinner with and he is also building a step for us to go out without sliding. :)

Going Inside The Bradley Hut

It's real, not a mirage! :D
The front door is almost entirely buried under the snow. We use our last bit of energy to go down and check if it's open. It's locked from the inside! Will we have to break in?
After walking around the house with no success of seeing another entrance, we climbed on the balcony and find an opening. Gotta work for it!
Everyone screamed of happiness, ran inside, and started to check things out. We made it!!!

The Mirage of The Bradley Hut

8 hours, 2 sandwiches, a few tears and some minor leg cramps later... There it was.... Or was it a mirage?

We arrived at the hut after sunset, it was dark and we were using our flashlights to follow the path. The forest looks different at night, calm but mysterious, and you start feeling out of place. There is no stopping to check if the shade on your left is really a tree and not something else. Unless you are Leo in the movie, The Revenant. Then, you can chill. ;-) This photo was taken the next day.

The First Hours to The Bradley Hut

What's a little Sierra blizzard when you have good friends, good food and a little 5 miles, 2k climb in fresh powder ahead. :)

The road is barely visible and the snow reaches our knees. With our avalanche beacon turned on, we proceed cautiously.

#CantLiveWithout Thermos!

I can't live without Thermos. Thermos travels with me everywhere I go and never forgets to hydrate me, even when the day gets very busy. Its water stays the same temperature for hours, it's magic. It doesn't break when it falls, it fits in my tiny purse, and stops me from using plastic bottles damaging our Earth.

The first time I realized the importance of having Thermos in my life was during a snowshoeing expedition in Lake Tahoe, CA. In the morning I filled it in with boiling water, hoping that it would keep me warm for a few hours. After a full long day in the cold, it was still warm, unbelievable.
I bet that this summer, the ice cubes will last as long.
