Vote for Google+ Collections Support in Buffer!

Since +Buffer just recently released the ability to share to +Google+ profiles, I think it would be awesome if they took it one step further and supported Collections.

Help make this a reality by voting here:
https://buffer.uservoice.com/forums/257855-feedback-and-ideas/suggestions/10792152-google-collections

Why is it so important that Collections are supported?

Google is making some big bets on its Collections feature. Over the past year they've made sure that it is successful by giving Collections posts a boost in the Home feed above and before Public posts. At +Steady Demand we've tested this to be true: Collections posts get far greater reach and drive far more follower growth than posts that are just Public.

So to all my social media manager friends out there who both USE +Buffer and understand the power of best Google+ practices, please vote for that feature!

#socialmedia #tools #socialmediamanagement
Please create the option to post directly to a Google+ collection. This feature is available in Friendsplus.me which is an independent developer so it can't be too hard to do for the happiness engineers at Buffer...

Google+ Update

Images and (rich) links in comments? Cool!

Bringing the new Google+ to more people

Last November, (http://goo.gl/Yn6mjA) we introduced a preview on web of a fully redesigned Google+ to make it easier for people to discover and connect around unique and interesting things. From a Japanese astronaut sharing his experience in the International Space Station (http://goo.gl/JZQ7wH) to food lovers sharing their passion for breadmaking (http://goo.gl/wEh0C8), people are using Google+ to explore their interests more than ever.

Since introducing the new version, twice as many Collections are followed per day and there are 1.6 million daily new Community joins. Many of you have also shared feedback and requests, and we’ve been listening (http://goo.gl/IMLvy7).

Today, we’re announcing three new updates for Google+.

First, some new features. You can now have richer conversations by adding links and photos to your comments. We’re also offering Community owners and moderators more control over who posts what with approved posting. Finally, we're launching a new notifications center on the web where you can see and manage your recent activity on Google+. These features will be available across the web, Android and iOS in the coming weeks.

Second, if you haven’t yet previewed the new Google+, over the next few days we’ll upgrade you to the experience when you sign in on the web. You’ll still be able to toggle back to classic Google+ for the time being.

Finally, businesses have told us that they’ve found Google+ to be a valuable way to help employees share ideas and expertise via Collections and Communities, and we’re looking forward to making it available to more organizations. Today, Google Apps users already using Google+ (http://goo.gl/GxGRXo) will also see the new experience (goo.gl/IJtbah) when they sign in and in the next few weeks, Google+ will become a core Google for Work service.

From the interesting (http://goo.gl/yP2QJp), to the surprising (http://goo.gl/3dk0Xs), and the delightful (goo.gl/gix7s6), we hope Google+ continues to help you discover amazing things from passionate people.

Grab Your Free Google+ Cover Photo Template
And shh... there's a bonus template at the end!

If you haven't yet created a new +Google+ cover photo for the new interface, you'll want to check this out. I give you a free template that I use for clients to create an optimal cover photo, taking into account the subtle nuances of the new Google+ profile layout.

I've also highlighted a few brands on Google+ who I think have done a fantastic job on their cover photos such as +CoSchedule, +Capri Laguna and +Stanfield Real Estate.

And if you read all the way to the end, I also give you a free Google+ Collections cover photo template. Because those are important too!

Grab it now, while it's hot! (And before they change something else around here! lol)

Happy Birthday

What +Dustin W. Stout said.

(He missed me off the list, but I'll forgive him. This time 😉)

Reflecting on 5 Years of Google+

When it began, I scoured the internet for a beta invite. Some noble and generous man heard my cries and gave me an invite. Thank you Magnus. Wherever you are now.

Shortly after, +James Brooks and I decided we were going to not only learn how to use this new thing called +Google+, but we were going to teach others how to use it as well.

I ended up meeting some great friends such as +Daniel James, +Andrew Joseph, +Yifat Cohen, +Peg Fitzpatrick, +Rebekah Radice, +Jeff Schultz, +Denis Labelle, and many more down the road.

Through this network I have been able to meet rockstars like +Daria Musk, thought leaders like +Mike Elgan, inspirations like +Neila Rey, and brilliant thinkers like +David Amerland.

Too many names to name you all. In 5 years of putting a crap-ton of time into this network it has generated countless interactions, immeasurable relationships and undeniable value far beyond any other social network I've ever used. Period.

Through this network I not only developed irreplaceable relationships, but also invaluable professional partnerships. If not for this network I would have never met +Ben Fisher, nor would I have met my current business partners +Nicholas Cardot and +Jason T. Wiser which has resulted warfareplugins.com.

And it's for darned sure that without Google+, dustn.tv would not be what it is today.

I've said it before, and I'll say it every year until they shut this thing down. Google+ has changed my life. And I know I'm definitely not the only one.

Happy birthday +Google+! Here's to many more.

What Happened to Google Hangouts On Air?

I spent over an hour trying to work out what to do about recording my regular T-Time Show (https://goo.gl/muEB1I). I downloaded software, tried to set streaming settings and yes, there would definitely have been some swearing too.

I gave up

Until discovering +Dustin W. Stout's post with some invaluable shortcuts.

What a superstar.
Now that Google Hangouts On Air is shutting down, the only alternative for content creators is to turn to YouTube Live Events. We'll show you exactly how to set one up.

5 Things to Never Do on Google+
Especially number 5!

We all know that every social network is different. Each network has it's own set of unspoken bylaws and they aren't always 100% obvious.

In this post I list the 5 things that I believe to be the most crucial things to avoid if you're trying to build a highly engaged following on Google+.

Read the full post here:

For those who like the tl;dr version:
1. Link dumping (a.k.a. link littering)
2. Ignore Community guidelines
3. Post the exact same thing to multiple communities
4. Talk Google+ "doom and gloom"
5. Use the "also send email to" feature (unwisely)

Regarding that last one, I've cited a few posts by my friends +Stephan Hovnanian, +Mike Allton, and +Daniel Futerman. They've outlined some very savvy ways of utilizing the "Also send email..." feature without being a spammer.

At the end of the day-- use Google+ how you want. But if you're trying to build a highly engaged audience, these 5 things are a great set of guides.

Google+ Notifications in Chrome

Via +Dustin W. Stout

Chrome Web Browser Notifications
Today we’re rolling out the ability to get Google+ notifications in the Chrome Web browser. In order to enable this feature, you’ll have to turn on the Google+ Web notifications setting and give your Web browser permission to send you notifications from plus.google.com (illustrated in the image).

You don't have to be on plus.google.com to get these notifications. General Chrome browser notification settings can be managed under Content Settings in Chrome.

As always, please send us any ideas/issues using the Send Feedback menu item to ensure we see them.

Thanks~
