Marvelling in the Rain

The Two Sisters, Geàrr Aonach and Aonach Dubh, rise dramatically from the floor of Glencoe as the sunset light finally burst free after the storm.

The Mist Blows Over

About a month ago I posted a shot from our last night in Glencoe, looking towards Bidean nam Bian with Achnambeithach Cottage sitting pretty underneath as the mist seeped into the valley and obscured the mountains tops. Well, here’s another composition from later in the evening when the mist started to dissipate. This poked holes in the cloud, allowing the last of the sunset light to spill through and illuminate some of the clouds with a peachy glow. On the left is the start of the Aonach Dubh ridge from Bidean nam Bian, the Third of the Three Sisters. Bidean itself is just peaking through the mist. An t-sròn is the small peak to the right (907m/2,975ft), with the gully cutting up its flank known as the Chasm of An t-sròn.

Our Own Place

The junction of cascading water near the top of the ravine to get to the Lost Valley: Coire Gabhail. +Lisabet Woods-Jack and I rested here after hiking up the ravine from the bottom of the Glencoe Pass, trying to figure out how to carry on the rest of the way. Turns out you need to ford the falls and carry on up along the left-hand side of the ravine, but it was in spate so we didn’t risk it this time.

In the Shadow of Bidean

The quaint Achnambeithach Cottage sits under the brooding peak of Bidean nam Bian. Look at those delicious autumn colours… look at them. This was the last of the light on our final night around Glencoe. The creeping mist I’ve posted about previously had cleared up a lot, leaving just wisps of cloud streaming off the peak. To get this composition, to show the scale of the peak against the cottage, I hiked out of the valley bottom and up onto the road, changing lenses from my usual Tokina 11-16mm to the 50mm f/1.8G prime. It’s the best I’ve got for a zoom. Did the trick nicely though.

The Glow of Achtriochtan

Sometimes you just have to take the obvious shot. Like when +Lisabet Woods-Jack and I arrived for sunset at Loch Achtriochtan on our last day around Glencoe to find crystal reflections of Aonach Dubh, the third of Glencoe’s Three Sisters on the right, and Aonach Eagach (953m/3,127ft) on the left.

As opposed to being a mountain in its own right, Aonach Eagach, pronounced OO-nakhh Egg-akhh meaning “the notched ridge”, is a ridge 10km long that lines the northern side of the Glencoe Pass. It is often cited as the most difficult scrambling ridge in the Highlands with no safe escape route once committed. I think I’ll leave that to other people…

Watching the Glen

After a tiring day hiking around Glencoe and shooting lots of photos, there was nothing better than getting back to our little studio with some tasty alcohol, +Lisabet Woods-Jack and I huddled up together, watching the sunset with this view. =)

The folks over at Rowanbrae, where we stayed (www.selfcateringglencoe.com), were wonderful and we heartily recommend them for all your Glencoe needs. Especially, with a killer view like this to wake up to!

Luminous Illumination

The perfect Buachaille Etive Mòr rises from Rannoch Moor. +Lisabet Woods-Jack and I got some incredible light when shooting this perfect mountain, including these wonderful crepuscular rays that broke through the clouds to illuminate Glen Etive. =)

In Awe of The Beuckle

Buachaille Etive Mòr, standing high and alone over the plains of Rannoch Moor in peak autumn colour as the River Coupall, overflowing from the day’s rain, rushes to join the River Etive.

I think perhaps my only regret of +Lisabet Woods-Jack and I's trip to Scotland was that I didn’t shoot more compositions of The Beuckle. It’s only my list to go back and give it a more thorough examining. Still, I feel this is a fairly unique composition. This was shot from the bridge where the Coupall flows underneath and joins the River Etive. The sunset light after the day’s rain was definitely an added bonus. =)

Revelation from the Rain

Oh go on then, have another one from Glencoe.

This one I shot in the rain. Before setting off to Scotland, I had invested in my first rain cover, complete with see-thru back and two arm-holes so you can operate the camera easily whilst still covering the camera. It worked a treat for this shot when +Lisabet Woods-Jack and I made our way to the feet of the Three Sisters. The day had been thick with heavy rain since we woke up but finally, by around 4pm-ish, it eased off and we grabbed the opportunity for some shooting. That was when the sky exploded above two of the Three Sisters: Geàrr Aonach (692m/2,270ft) and Aonach Dubh.

Fire in the Glen

The composition above I grabbed later in the evening after nabbing this one -> http://lightsweep.co.uk/post/100334799578/greetings-to-the-third-sister . The last of the sunset light was dying away, leaving this glorious pink and purple in the sky. I quite enjoy this portrait of Aonach Dubh, my second favourite of the Three Sisters of Glencoe. I’m happy +Lisabet Woods-Jack and I managed to reach Glencoe in peak autumn foliage because the sheer variety of colours was glorious. =)
