Wow, Valve acknowledging that the AMD proprietary driver performs worse is... interesting. Now would be the time for AMD to actually contribute to the Open Source drivers. But of course that won't happen because it wouldn't be cross-platform.

(I know that SteamMachines never took off anyway and even then you wouldn't buy Nvidia.)
SteamOS stopped using AMDs proprietary graphics driver and now uses the FLOSS driver by default steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse/discussions/1/1291816880503248813/ "[…] we have rebased our kernel changes on top of the latest 4.11 Linux kernel. We have updated all the graphics drivers. This update also switches SteamOS from the proprietary AMDGPU-PRO driver to the open source mesa driver. Having an Open Source equivalent of Spanner will be very useful in the future. Once you have worked with a database that gives you sensible availability and performance with large data stores, you want that, not herding database servers.

I suppose it's too US-centric to actually work as designed on non-US Americans. Plus it's written Oatmeal-style. On the other hand it seems to explain fairly well why arguments get so heated at times, because people are trying to protect themselves (and their beliefs).
