Unexpected sign out issues on your Google account

23 February, 2017 - Google has gotten reports about some users being signed out of their accounts without the users request. This appears to be an single incident and only needing reauthentication.

This is a good time to change your password and be sure two step verification is enabled on your account.

You can also run an account security checkup to be super sure your account is safe and sound.

Statement from Google:
"We're investigating, but not to worry: there is no indication that this is connected to any phishing or account security threats. Please try to sign-in again at accounts.google.com and if you cannot remember your password, please use this link (g.co/recover) to recover your password. If you use 2-Step Verification, there may have been a delay in receiving your SMS code. Please try again or use backup codes."

DON'T BE A PHISHING VICTIM

If you don't have 2-step authentication activated on your Google account, I highly recommend you enable it. More and more people are becoming victims in this way and it's very easy to prevent it.

For more information on how to enable 2-step authentication on your Google account, see this Help Center Article.

Google's New Personal Safety App

”Whether it’s hiking alone or walking down a street after dark — sometimes you want to know someone's got your back. To help you feel safe and give your friends and family peace of mind, today we're launching Trusted Contacts. This new personal safety app lets you share your location with loved ones in everyday situations and when emergencies arise — even if your phone is offline or you can’t get to it.”

With Trusted Contacts you can assign “trusted” status to the contacts you choose and trust. If your trusted contacts are really worried about you, they can request to see your location even if you aren't sharing it but you will get a notification about it and have to choice to deny it. However, if you’re unable to respond in a short timeframe, your location is shared automatically and your loved ones can determine the best way to help you out. Of course, you can stop sharing your location or change your trusted contacts whenever you want. You can even get help if your phone is offline and you can invite a trusted friend to virtually walk you home to watch you in real-time.

"Whether you just need a little reassurance or you’re actually in an emergency, Trusted Contacts helps connect you with the people you care about most — at the times you need them most."

Download Trusted Contacts today from the Play Store*, (http://goo.gl/m7SbSn )and visit the help center for more info by clicking the Link/image below.

* Available for Android only for now, iOS is being worked on, click here to get notified about the iOS app. https://goo.gl/8p1TYN

Google Map Maker is being retired after it's features are integrated into Google Maps. This is expected to be final in March of 2017.

Shocking news: Map Maker will be closed
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/map-maker/UEN0wxhj6Rs

Since 2008, the Google Map Maker community has edited and moderated millions of features to improve the Google Maps experience for users worldwide. The Google Maps team took notice and, beginning with adding and editing places, started to bring Map Maker capabilities to our desktop and mobile products to make it easier for more users to keep their communities up to date while at home or on the go. These changes have empowered many more users to update the places they care about, view the status of their edits, and moderate other users’ edits. But, we have some updates to share. Today, we want to let you know that Google Map Maker features will officially graduate and be integrated directly into Google Maps in March 2017 when we’ll retire the standalone Map Maker product.

This update will enable us to focus on providing the best editing and moderation experience within Google Maps on both desktop and on mobile. We’ll continue to roll out new features to make sure you’re able to do most of the things you’ve grown accustomed to doing in Map Maker – like edit roads – leading up to March 2017 and after.

Starting today, edits made on Google Maps will no longer be available for moderation on Map Maker. This will allow us to streamline our efforts, speeding up the time for an edit to get published. We will continue posting updates here on the Map Maker Help Forum and on LocalGuidesConnect.com as we bring more features into Google Maps.

To keep contributing your local knowledge to Google Maps and engage with a passionate community of likeminded individuals, we invite you to join the Local Guides program where you can earn points, unlock rewards for submitting edits and other information, and get early access to new Google Maps features.

We’ve greatly appreciated your contributions to Google Maps over the years and hope you will continue to update the world around you.

Thank you,
The Google Map Maker Team

Cast a spell with Google and Warner Bros. Pictures

Have you ever wanted to cast spells like Harry Potter? Google has added some cool new features to help you do it.

"If you want to try being a wizard, try casting spells on your Android phone: Just say “Ok Google” followed by “Lumos” or “Nox” to turn your flashlight on and off. Try “Silencio” to silence the ringer and notifications."
