To become a #greatleader, unselfishness is perhaps the single most important principle you must learn. This is true in the Marine Corps and it is true in small-business life. #Leading a team within a small business is one of the hardest tasks the average professional can face. Because little separates you from your employees. In many cases the #organization has not yet found remarkable success or even reliable structure. Your employees often have a similar amount of industry experience as you do. Unselfishness is a reliable tool in smoothing out the bumpy interactions that occur as a result of such dynamics. This is all to say, becoming a well-regarded leader in a small business is tough.

There are two aspects of #servantleadership. The #leadership aspect is about vision, direction, and goals. Because leadership is about going somewhere. And that's the responsibility of the hierarchy. If people aren't clear on what business you're in, what you're trying to accomplish, your values, your goals, then shame on you. It doesn't mean you shouldn't involve them. It's just your responsibility to make sure that that's clear. And that's the leadership part of servant leadership. And then, once that's done, now you move to the servant part of servant leadership. And, philosophically, you’ve got to turn that pyramid upside down, so now you work for your people, who eventually work for your customers.

If #communication were easy, everyone would be good at it. The fact is, they aren’t. Companies are rife with #miscommunication, and #leaders rarely see themselves as the problem. Rarely do leaders recognize the difference in basic communication versus communication that inspires others to willingly act.

Learning to communicate clearly and concisely is key. Earning respect, credibility and trust that’s worthy of influence only comes when leaders communicate consistently every day, in every interaction, Monday to Monday. When leaders become effective in their #communicationskills - both speaking and listening - they don't require countless meetings to gain an understanding of a subject. They don't need continual follow-up to clarify what they said in previous interactions. Communicating comes naturally. Communicating effectively requires continual practice and focus.

According to a study conducted by Columbia University, Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, both male and female hiring managers were two times more likely to choose male candidates for mathematics and science careers over female candidates when all applicants had equal skills.

With hard work, diligence, intelligence and education come rewards of seniority within businesses and organizations. By giving executive-level jobs to women who deserve them, we are showing younger women and working women that this idea of success is possible.

#Greatleaders create a vision of the future that is vivid and compelling, and that motivates employees to want to achieve it. Everyone wants to work for a company that makes a difference in the world. As a leader, you are best able to help the members of your team connect what they do to the impact it has on customers and communities.

Ultimately, #leaders are recruited, trained, and chosen to solve organizational problems, and to take advantage of opportunities in the marketplace. This requires not only excellent analytical abilities but also above-average people skills.

Cultivating a sense of perspective isn’t something many of us are taught–by our bosses or anyone else - early in our careers. But simply being intentional about it can go a long way. Fundamentally, perspective requires recognizing your own limitations as well as those of the people you work with - and treating both with empathy. This is a powerful soft skill to practice before you’re put in charge of a team, and your own support network is a great proxy.

Whether it’s your relationships, finances, health, or other areas that matter in your life, be more thoughtful about what you’re doing and whether you’re making the best choices. As you cultivate more #mindfulness in decisions and actions you may be taking for granted or dismissing, the practice will help you develop a stronger sense of self and identity, which will also help you in the #workplace

Get involved in community organizations, a church, or other groups where you’re likely to meet people who have different experiences and backgrounds. Being around people who have varied experiences can expand your thinking and teach more about yourself.

A big lie we tell ourselves is that to lead we must be perfect. Perfection is the lowest standard because it creates an impossible game to win. Sometimes the guilt of being less than perfect can creep in from past failures and affect current success. There are no perfect #leaders. Letting go of guilt and shame for your failures is the key to breaking this pattern.

Some leaders believe they need to be in control of every aspect of their business. They believe being in control will help them avoid mistakes. Unfortunately, this may be true as long as you want your company to remain small. The key to breaking this pattern is trust. Others may not do things the way you do, but empowering others to work your business is a sure way to create progress.

#Leadership teams at the top face the same challenge. They remain 'objective' until the moment they don’t - until an agenda item impacts them directly. Then, they fend for their themselves. Yet, that’s often what happens not just with leadership teams at the top but also with project teams, #management teams, sales teams and startups.

Purpose is what calls you forward through the chaos, through the uncertainty and toward the unfathomable that you never knew you had the capacity to endure had it not been for purpose calling your name. Teams are no different. There needs to be a compelling reason for why the team exists and what it aspires to achieve. A purpose should be clear, challenging, consequential and shared.
