The more you know about their habits and quirks the easier it is to photograph them. http://nocroppingzone.blogspot.com/2015/05/bee-havior-part-i.html

Mating Red Mason Bees
Technique: It was cool this morning when I found this mating pair, and with both of them feeling lethargic due to the temperature I was able to coax the female into climbing onto my finger. I set the Fstop to 11 and the shutter to 1/125th so that I could expose the sky behind them. The tricky part is hand holding over 2 kilos (4.8 pounds) of camera gear while sliding the lens on my hand to get them both in focus. Lots of deleted frames.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/125, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (over 1x) + a diffused MT-24EX (both flash heads on the Canon flash mount, E-TTL metering).

Mason Bee Series 4-2

Male of Megachile (Chalicodoma) parietina.

Technique: It was a cool day (18C) with partly cloudy skies and intermittent light showers -perfect weather to go looking for solitary bees since they'll have a tough time keeping their metabolism up. I got lucky and found this Mason bee semi-dormant in my Lavender. This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. I used an artificial flower to keep the background from being black.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (around 3x) + a diffused MT-24EX (both flash heads on the Canon flash mount, E-TTL metering).

European Wool Carder Bee IX

Technique: Another early morning shot of a soon to be active critter. With local temps in the low 20s C at dawn they don't stay still very long. I held on to the Lavender stalk that it was on with my left hand, and rested the lens on that same hand to keep the scene steady. This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 200 with highlight tone priority) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (over 3x) + a diffused MT-24EX (both flash heads on the Canon flash mount, E-TTL metering with -1 1/3 FEC).

Feeding Common Carder Bee

Technique: I injected artificial nectar into some of my Lavender flowers, and when this Common Carder Bee took the bait I grabbed onto the flower's stem with my left hand to keep the scene steady. I then rested the lens on my hand and looked for a good angle, adjusting the plane of focus as the critter tried to avoid me and the camera. Lots of deleted frames...

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 200 with highlight tone priority) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (under 2x) + a diffused MT-24EX (both flash heads on the Canon flash mount, E-TTL metering with -1 2/3 FEC, and second curtain sync).

Turn Signal

Technique: I found this European Wool carder bee snoozing on a Lavender stalk before sunset and woke up early the next morning to photograph it. I placed an artificial flower in the background to keep it from being black. This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 200 with highlight tone priority) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (2x) + a diffused MT-24EX (both flash heads on the Canon flash mount, E-TTL metering with -1 2/3 FEC).
