South Haven Silhouette

I got this one evening back in January, 2012 while I had been on the South Haven lighthouse pier (South Haven, Michigan) photographing the lighthouse. I had been watching these kids meander along and then watched as their group tightened near the end of the pier. I had pre-visualized a silhouette image with them so I slowly slinked along behind them and I'll be darned if they didn't form a perfect composition for me. CLICK - gotcha!

St. Joseph Lighthouse, St. Joseph, MI

I came across this image while looking for something that fit an "overexposed" theme. I shared this image a few years ago and for some reason I had cropped it to 1:1 (which rarely works for me). But after rediscovering it I reset my raw development and started from scratch and thought the results deserved a re-share. I have never been disappointed in my photo-haul when visiting Michigan lighthouses, and the casually-passing sailboat helped to give me a much more interesting composition.

Calm After the Storm

The Kitty Hawk pier photographed under a nearly full moon a couple days after Hurricane Sandy swept the North Carolina coast.

Santa Rosa Sunrise

I can probably count on one hand the number of foggy-landscape photos I have taken that have been shared with the public. For whatever reason I've never been able to capture the essence of the scene as I saw it in my mind's eye. I got kind of lucky here with the rising sun washing out the contrast enough to convey (close enough) what I felt was a good depiction of what I saw.

A Ruined Beauty

Last week I shared an image of a different boat that had been tied to the shore and left to rot - that boat is just around the corner to the right, maybe 50 feet away. I would have loved to have seen this particular boat in its' prime but now the entire platform holds a few inches of mud, silt, and is growing marsh grass quite nicely!

Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, Manteo, North Carolina

Near the end of December I shared an image of this lighthouse where I mentioned the difficulty one would experience in creating a unique image of the place (its one of those places that's been photographed a gajillion times before) given the limited angles in which to compose from.  To say the least, one has to get rather creative to find new or different elements to include in the composition that hasn't been done many times before. This was one of my attempts at solving that problem by photographing across the top of the switchgrass and reeds that surround the nearby boardwalks.

The building is an exterior reconstruction of the square cottage-style screw-pile lighthouse which stood at the southern entrance to Croatan Sound, near Wanchese, NC. The lens is a 4th order Fresnel lens with a fixed white light and is still active for guiding boats into Shallowbag Bay. (description paraphrased from: townofmanteo.com)

Sand Dunes of OBX : The great Outer Banks 'residential guardians'

There is a stretch of North Carolina highway 12, north of Corolla, NC, that runs approximately 10.5 miles along the beach to the Virginia state line. The road is not paved here ... the beach itself is Hwy 12. This is a gorgeous area of the NC outer banks and is a place that is rather desirable to live for those who don't mind a high risk of losing their house to a hurricane!  This photo shows the sand dunes that have been erected over time to give the home owners some degree of protection from potential storm surges. Similar dunes can be found all up and down the NC coastline but the dunes in this area are particularly impressive for what they are.

Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, Manteo, North Carolina

This lighthouse is one of those all-North-Carolina-photographers-must-do sort of destinations, but all for good reason: the place is just simply wonderful to visit!  But it can also be rather difficult to create a unique image of the place given the limited angles available to compose from. Nevertheless, I just love this scene and I'll definitely revisit several more times in the future!
