Fixing flash crashes is not as easy as banning spoofers.
In short, extreme events can prompt what amounts to a liquidity crisis and a crash. Information asymmetry induced by an inability in financial infrastructure to respond in a timely manner. Millisecond trades cannot be guaranteed to be profitable in the face of 90 second lag.

Quote: weakness in the trade-reporting infrastructure may have played a significant part. They use millisecond analysis both in terms of executed trades and, more importantly, in terms of data feeds as reporting of trades were being delayed by as much as 90 seconds.

Bitcoin decentralization has failed.
This article explains how big the problem is, but the fact that a few players can effectively manipulate the currency means that safeguards aimed at ensuring decentralization have failed.

Quote: What was meant to be a new, decentralised form of money that lacked “systemically important institutions” and “too big to fail” has become something even worse: a system completely controlled by just a handful of people. Worse still, the network is on the brink of technical collapse. The mechanisms that should have prevented this outcome have broken down, and as a result there’s no longer much reason to think Bitcoin can actually be better than the existing financial system.
I’ve spent more than 5 years being a Bitcoin developer. The software I’ve written has been used by millions of users, hu…

Petrodollar now at risk.
Regardless of initial intentions, it appears there's a oil price war of attrition between Saudi Arabia and Russia.

Quote: Dr Alsweilem said the country does not have deep enough pockets to wage a long war of attrition in the global crude markets, whatever the superficial appearances.
“If anything happens to the riyal exchange peg, the consequences will be dramatic," warns the country's exchange rate guru

Patents as a way to lock down the use of Bitcoin.
Patenting processes layered atop Bitcoin may be a way to stifle innovation as well as lock out competitors.
The bitcoin wire transfer would convert the sender's funds at a cryptocurrency exchange then sent to another exchange to be converted to foreign currency.

Why quantitative easing hasn't resulted in inflation.
Banks have been forced to keep more capital on hand, so it's just sitting in place keeping them in regulatory compliance, they're not lending it out. The increased money supply isn't being multiplied via fractional banking. What's needed now is an exit strategy.

Quote: The explosion of excess reserves as a consequence of the Fed's QE means that financial institutions have no need to tap [the interbank money markets]
But we don't quite yet know what it will be.

Automation may usher in a post-work society.
Universal basic income sounds simple, but I expect immigration to become an issue, with economic migrants fleeing from work-based societies to post-work societies. Current immigration policy is often geared toward favoring skilled workers or wealthy investors. I'm not seeing a lot of discussion regarding second-order effects yet, as the concept of UBI is still being sold.

Quote: The real dystopia is that, fearing the mass unemployment and psychological aimlessness it might bring, we stall the third industrial revolution. Instead we end up creating millions of low skilled jobs that do not need to exist.
To benefit from the automation revolution we need a universal basic income, the slashing of working hours and a redefinition of ourselves without work

The logic of UBI has been misused in every individual country that talk about its implementation for political effect only. The universal definition should be globally, not just in any country. Even if any country started it first with 1k is just pure hypocrisy that the money is spend to buy from third world low cost n labor products. Ironic if that export countru had UBI of 100. Where is the equality from birth that no activist of UBI seem to talk about. UBI is not required due to automation. There are many new jobs and services that pay ridiculous wages that no AI can take over in decades and this area will become the new low pay wages job eg clinical research, consumer survey, accreditation and lastly education etc. Imagine why so many UK or US degree come to thailand just to teach and with 3.5B living under 2USD per month, giving them decent UBI as same rate as europe/US proposed (or at least 60-70%) will allow them to spend so much more to boast economy spending, lower unemployment, increase poor people qualification and living standards. I'm starting a project on UBI+social business using open source IT to try create a game model giving registered users 30 a day and once it gain enough user base like FB for international attention, then bring it live. For info at plus.google.com - Global Universal System (GUS) if any is interested to join me discuss the model or feedback.

Consumption taxes do not exist in a vacuum.
The proper way to anticipate the effect of a consumption tax is ecological. People/consumers will substitute away from a targeted product if their purchasing environment offers ready options. There can be structural reasons why consumers may not as readily substitute another product, in this case namely untaxed beverages. The study itself also points out marketing and pricing strategies that can be applied by producers to moderate the impact of attempts to selectively tax goods in the name of health intervention. My takeaway: the likely impact of an health-driven excise tax would probably be less than what advocates hope for, but more than detractors might rhetorically allow.

Flat yield curves result in no incentive to invest in the future.
Is this the end state of excessive financialization? Incentivizing the future would seem an obvious way out.

Quote: Gross, who oversees the $1.4 billion Janus Global Unconstrained Bond Fund, said the Federal Reserve's historical models fail to recognize that over the past 25 years, capitalism has increasingly morphed into a finance-dominated system as opposed to one that produces goods and services.

+Dallas Bayly Cryptocurrency actually have more volatile value, so it's really hard to use it as a payment instrument. Currency should've been stable throughout the time. And every mining costs add exponentially. The blockchain system is alright i guess, with high security system and high efficiency.

Markets are not efficient.
We should consider markets to be instances of solutions to the market problem, a view which is implicit in mechanism design theory. Perfect efficiency is probably computationally unfeasible in polynomial time, which has implications for both market platforms and trading systems. Economists who assume efficient markets in their models are as unrealistic as physicists modelling with the assumption of frictionless surfaces.

Quote: _ The majority of financial academics believe in
market efficiency and the majority of computer scientists
believe that P != NP. The result of this paper
is that they cannot both be right: either P = NP and
the markets are efficient, or P != NP and the markets
are not efficient._
