Ingress Christmas Countdown: The "must know" portals. Day 24/24 #ingressCountdown
To understand the future, one must remember the past.

Name: 24 Hour Sun Dial
Description:  A sun clock
Location:  McMurdo Station, Ross Island, Antarctica

The Portal network is everywhere. The Exotic Matter that has been seeping into the world happens to cover the globe from Antarctica, all the way to the north pole. As we have seen over the last three weeks, there are portals that are important to each agent that is playing. Some are important for the storyline, while others are simply important to individuals that have had an experience associated with the portal. Looking back, we see these stories that bring us together, provide a sense of community, across faction lines and through the years.

With Christmas tomorrow we turn to the arctic, as Santa may be circling the earth faster than any spoofer could keep up with, we know that Santa cannot play ingress at the north pole. In the southern hemisphere we have portals that are the most remote in all of the world, where even GPS signal is hard to get at times, let alone signal. But! There has even been a first saturday event at the pole. Likely the least attended of any FS event, ever, yet it happened, and shows the lengths that any and all ingress agents will go through to play.

There is a deeper intrigue here, why does the portal network stop at the 89th parallel? What has +Niantic Project  been hiding from us these long years?

This is the last post in the #ingressCountdown collection.
I would like to thank all agents who submitted their stories and helped me to recover and collect information about each of the portals. Also a big thank you to all the followers who encouraged me to keep counting. Without all of you this countdown could never have happened.

Here is the promised drawing for the swag packs. Two agent names will be picked up using the random number generator two minutes after this post goes online.

Ingress Christmas Countdown: The "must know" portals. Day 23/24 #ingressCountdown
To understand the future, one must remember the past.
Name: Sun Tunnels and Tiny Buddha.
Description: A piece of art, four concrete tubes
Location: Wendover, UT, USA
Intel link: https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=41.30349,-113.863805&z=19&pll=41.30349,-113.863805

Importance: This is one of the favourite portals of #PonyRiders and is often used for BAFs. If this portal is captured by RES agents an alarm goes through ENL hangouts and a crew sent to destroy that portal even before the RES crew comes back home.

The portal itself is a piece of art located in a remote area in the middle of the West Desert in Utah. It was designed by artist Nancy Holt in 1976. The four big tubes are laid out in an X shape. The pair of tubes are aligned with the direction of the rising and setting sun at the summer and winter solstice correspondingly.
Today, 23rd December is the day of the winter solstice

The portal is about a four hour drive from Salt Lake City each way. The last few kilometers of road is all dirt. At certain times of the year it might be even dangerous to try to access this portal. If in winter the temperature is above freezing, the car can simply get stuck in the mud. When it is freezing, the icy "road" is very slippery. As a bonus for your effort of coming to the Sun Tunnels in winter, you can see lots of fluffy desert bunnies on your way there.

The desert at night is beautiful. Far away from any light pollution from city lights, the sky is dark and endless with a Milliard of stars and the gorgeous Milky Way. Desert in winter at night is dangerous. It is very easy to get lost out there as there there is not a well defined road and GPS is not always working correctly. If you stop your car and turn off the lights, all you have is the cold is the darkness above and around you.

Next to the Sun Tunnels there is a tiny Tiny Buddah portal. ENL tried to report this portal as invalid and remove it. Well, technically they are right because the sculpture of the tiny Buddha is already gone somewhere, but this portal represents more than just a convenient anchor for a BAF. There is a beautiful story of how this portal appeared and what how it represents the healing from the pain and finding your path.

Day 22/24 - Gundam Mega Statue Odaiba in Japan
Very impressive! Hope to hack a key to it one day!
Thank you +Vicki Ellen for filling in! 💙

Ingress Christmas Countdown: The "must know" portals. Day 22/24 #ingressCountdown
To understand the future, one must remember the past.

Name: Gundam Mega Statue Odaiba
Description: A life-size statue of a Gundam mobile suit
Location: DiverCity, Odaiba, Tokyo
Intel link: https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=35.624425,139.775507&z=17&pll=35.624425,139.775507

Importance: One of the most famous portals in Japan, was featured on an early Ingress report, and is a much sought-after souvenir key. Included in ENL operation #BucketList and is located next to the registration location for #AegisNova Tokyo.

Vicki here, filling in for our roving reporter +Julia Vivienne Loverdose  who is off on another #Ingress adventure and can't share an epic portal today. I'm lucky to be writing about one of my favourites!

Standing guard over the Odaiba area of Tokyo day and night, this 18 metre tall replica of the iconic Gundam suit is a stunning must-visit sight for many visitors to Japan. It’s an imposing reminder of the much-loved culture this creative nation has brought to the world, and was created to mark the 30th anniversary of the 50 billion yen Gundam franchise. While impressive during the day, it's even moreso at night when it comes to life in a live show. http://pinktentacle.com/2009/06/gundam-night-pics/
Smoke billows from vents on its armoured shell, lights and mechanical sounds emanate from the figure, the eyes shine brightly, and the face of the suit turns to survey the crowd.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iK5tk-hyww

Whilst it is often called a robot, a Gundam is actually a suit of powered armour which gives the wearer incredible strength and ability. This statue is based on the iconic Gundam suit model RG 1/1 RX-78-2 Ver. GFT suit, piloted by Amuro Ray (アムロ・レイ). https://goo.gl/mZx4Gk It features such weapons as 60 mm Vulcan guns, Beam Sabers and a Hyper Bazooka.

The portal was highlighted by ENL agent @hiyoko145 in an early #Ingress report, where Susanna Moyer commented, “The Gundam portal is one of the most exciting and iconic ones that we have seen in Ingress” Ingress report Episode 35  https://youtu.be/WHgMqDqcwkA?t=2m30s

Many agents who attended the biggest ever anomaly, #AegisNova Tokyo, made a pilgrimage to this portal for a photo opportunity https://plus.google.com/+DionSegijn/posts/22aSae5qp8J and to hack those all-important souvenir keys. ENL agent and Niantic staff member @matti91tilde was quick to visit the portal during her stay in Japan and returned with 32 portal keys, which she distributed to waiting agents at the Cologne #ViaLux anomaly https://plus.google.com/+MatildeTusberti/posts/91SgDsx4c6x

“When local Agents heard I was headed to Aegis Nova Tokyo, one of the request I got was for Gundam Souvenir keys. It took me a few visits and help from some Tokyo agents to get over a dozen keys which were promptly placed into an MUFG capsule. The statue itself was a majestic sight to behold in person and I'm glad i got to view it up close” - +Gene C

The portal has been included in Ingress biocards https://goo.gl/Dy1nkt and was featured in an Ingress mission banner. https://ingressmosaik.com/mosaic/12294

The most noteworthy operation involving the portal was during the ENL #BucketList operation. After this portal was identified as an essential sight whilst visiting Japan, over 40 agents descended on the area and built 120 p8. The night ended with a light show at the portal https://plus.google.com/+%E3%81%A6%E3%82%8B%E3%82%8A%E3%82%93%E3%81%94/posts/gWhVE2zZgWG

Fans of the statue will surely be saddened to bid it goodbye as it is scheduled to be permanently removed on March 5, 2017 http://kotaku.com/japans-giant-gundam-will-be-torn-down-next-march-1789549607  But do not fret! It was reported that a new life-size Gundam is to be installed sometime soon for the preparation for Gundam’s 40th anniversary in 2019. We can expect to see the giant Gundam returning to protect Japan in the next few years. Meanwhile, maybe you should seek out a RES or ENL themed Gundam suit figure! https://goo.gl/LPLt9h

Ingress Christmas Countdown: The "must know" portals. Day 21/24 #ingressCountdown
Where is one there is many

Name: Heart Box Baby HBB
Description:  A creepy street art
Location: Seattle, WA, USA
Intel link: https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=47.6757,-122.31724&z=19&pll=47.6757,-122.31724

Importance: Very creepy portal loved by local ENL. They love it so much that they hacked hundreds of keys to it and drop it whenever they go somewhere -as a surprise_.

Preamble: There is a point in the life of every portal monkey where they have to sit down and think about their life choices. "Why? Why did I do this? Why did I approve this portal?” Today might be such a day...

Todays portal is... different. Most people will never have heard of it because it was never a part of the official Ingress canon. It has never been in contact with any anomaly or used as a shard relay. But still... this portal  infuses fear and terror into the hearts of unsuspecting #ingress agents around the world.

As most stories, this whole thing started many years ago as an innocent joke. People were hacking keys from this portal on their way to the local farm and dropping them at the house of agent @agentname. At first it was just a key here and there but over time more and more keys appeared on his door step. He started to complain to his community but after some time he realised that keys kept appearing even though there were no agents in sight…

He tried to ignore the keys but one sleepless night he woke up because the portal  was calling for him. He  closed the scanner but he could still hear tiny little voices. He uninstalled the scanner… But it did not help. The faint whispers in the darkness of the night were still there…
"I am alone, soooo alone. Pick me up, give me company, pleeeeease. It’s cooooold outside… aloooone”.

Finally he couldn't resist their call, his mind snapped and he started to pick up every single key like a brainless automaton... Rumours say that over time he gathered more than 600 of these keys and more keys kept appearing. Nowadays, Ingress historians are convinced that this agent was Agent Zero, the epicenter of the world wide spread of this horrific and demonic key.

If you can believe the reports, keys of this portal has been found everywhere, in the Vatican, in Sydney, at the Amsterdam airport, Orlando, San Diego.... It is everywhere. And if you are not careful it will also find you.

Don’t pick it up, otherwise you might hear whispery voices late at night… “Pick me up… i am aloooone.. Alooooooone… sooooo coooooold”. And if there is one key, there will be more keys...

...Where is one there is many..

Ingress Christmas Countdown: The "must know" portals. Day 20/24 #ingressCountdown
To understand the future, one must remember the past.

Name: Belvederegarten, Wien
Description: A fountain
Location: Vienna, Austria
Intel link: https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=48.192538,16.38112&z=17&pll=48.192538,16.38112

Importance: A RES shards receiver for #Obsidian anomaly with a permanent linkstar on it during the entire event.

Belvedere is a gorgeous garden with a castle, museum, perfect green lawns and a couple of fountains. One of the fountains was a RES shard receiver at the #obsidian anomaly held in Vienna this year. One could only imagine what all the tourists were thinking on that day when they saw hundreds of people standing around the fountain and staring at their phones.

The targets were known before the anomaly start, allowing for hundred keys being farmed in advance. The amount of farmed keys made this portal the main RES reciever. To score shards, RES managed to build a linkstar on this portal and hold it for the whole four hours of the anomaly. It was a flash shard anomaly, so unlike in the hybrid anomaly, shards collected at the target didn't disappear after each hour. All the collected shiny shards were slowly floating on top of the portal the entire time.  Add a linkstar on top of it for the full awesomeness.

Getting send away by the guards 😛when we were farming keys there early 😛

+Ute Heikaemper:
I remember the command stealth farming, when we arrived there were more than a hundred agents, frackers and hackmods ...It was the target we knew of beforehand, so it was the main target because of the keys we got, our team had an average of 20 keys, we gave a lot away later that day.

+Lucy Shires:
The deathstar that stayed for the entire event... it was magnificent!

While doing a research on this portal I stumbled across an unexpected phenomena. On one hand, the fact that RES had a linkstar on that portal for four hours during the whole anomaly is, no doubt, epic.  On the other hand, most agents whom I asked to share their stories had only quite boring memories. The spark was missing….
“Vienna was even more boring than Hamburg”. (c) +Vicki Ellen

Ingress Christmas Countdown: The "must know" portals. Day 19/24 #ingressCountdown
To understand the future, one must remember the past.

Name: The Gates of Hell
Description:  A massive bronze sculpture
Location: Palo Alto, CA, USA
Intel link: https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=37.432501,-122.170774&z=17&pll=37.432501,-122.170774

Importance: The first P8 portal in the history of #ingress.

Everything changes. Nowadays almost everyone has a P8 couch portal. Getting gear in ingress is a boring routine. Agents recycle high level items without thinking when they are at item cap. It wasn't always like this though.  In the early days of #ingress there was a time when agents had no level 8 gear yet. The first P8 portal was yet to be created. It was a race which faction will accomplish it first, to gather 8 level 8 agents in one place.

The achievement of creating the world's first P8 goes to ENL. I am not sure if this event had any effect on the official ingress storyline directly but it was definitely an epic achievement at that time. As much as each RES agent would loved to have this record scored for their faction,  it must have happened this way.  It was pre-defined. The higher level portals let more XM into our world. This way it beautifully correlates with the main goal of ENL - to provide humans with as much XM as possible to gain more control over their thoughts.

The name of the portal was chosen correspondingly. The Gates of Hell was the first level 8 portal, with the first link to a level 8 portal, and the first anchor for a mini-field with all level 8 portals.  ENL have had anniversary farms ever since at this location.

+Guy Albertelli

An interesting note is the text from the portal description:
I have loved these awesome doors since that winter day in 1949 when I first stood below them outside the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia and was terrified at the prospect of writing my dissertation on the Gates of Hell. In one way or another, I have lived with them for thirty-five years, and yet when it comes to lecturing or writing about this great portal there are still exhilarating things to discover, accompanied by inevitable dismay over the inadequacy of one's own language and culture to share revelations... I've seen the doors in museums and foundries, in plaster and war, in negative molds and raw bronze sections, and they never fail to surprise. Look at them in the rain or when a winter sun is low and they take on a different qualities. Light then at night form below, the way Rodin must have done in his studio a thousand times, and when you realize you don't know them as a work of art... Not other single work of sculpture know to me can so attach itself to a person for life, making constant claims on intelligence, intuition, and feeling and yet remain so fresh, changing as one changes rewarding ages and experience. You do not outgrow The Gates, you grow into them.

Ingress Christmas Countdown: The "must know" portals. Day 18/24 #ingressCountdown
To understand the future, one must remember the past.

Name: Усть-Цильма 1542
Description: a wooden house with numbers on it
Location: Ust-Tsilma, Komi Republic, Russia
Intel link: https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=65.432822,52.174434&z=17&pll=65.432822,52.174434

Importance: An anchor for two epic RES fields Ursa Major and Eureka back in 2014.

Ust-Tsilma (rus.: Усть-Цильма) is one of the oldest russian villages which exists already for more than 600 years and still preserves the old traditions. The village is located in the northern part of Russia and has a subarctic climate with long cold winters with a typical temperature of −20C (−4 F) and a mildly warm short summer. The population of the village counts only 4.8k people. The portal itself is located near the main center of life in the village - the only grocery store. Being hardlly accessible and located in the middle of nowhere, this was a perfect location to be an anchor for two epic RES fields named Ursa Major and Eureka.

Ursa Major is a RES BAF that covered the North Pole. With some imagination, this fields looked like a batman on the intel map.

+Anton Khudozhnik tells us how the idea of the Ursa Major was created:
_ An idea to cover the North Pole has been there for a while. I have already got one of the hard accessible portals  in Anadyr, Chukotka, the easternmost town in Russia. Thanks to the 3D view of the Google Earth the first draft was done really quickly. The location of Ust-Tsilma allowed for a link that nicely arched the northern coast of Russia._

Area: 86.200.678  km^2
Covered: 59 countries and three continents
Size: 1.6 billion MU

It is hard to say if local people had any idea what #ingress is and that their village played an important role in the battle against shapers. But when +Anton Khudozhnik  went there for the second time three months later, the locals still could recognize him.

The #Eureka field wasn't up for long time. Sadly, the portal in Ust-Tsilma was destroyed by a spoofer who said that such a big field cannot be created without a cheating, so it must be destroyed the same way.

+Irina Sokolova says:
My most colorful impressions were during the ride to the portal. It all started with 30 hours by train, the six (!) hours by taxi, including two hour waiting for the first morning ferry and an hour on the ferry. This place was the most epic “nowhere” I have ever seen.

Ingress Christmas Countdown: The "must know" portals. Day 17/24 #ingressCountdown
To understand the future, one must remember the past.

Name: Scheveningen Port Green Lighthouse (SPGL)
Description: A lighthouse
Location: Scheveningen, The Hague, The Netherlands
Intel link: https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=52.103825,4.252775&z=19&pll=52.103825,4.252775

Importance: Probably seen more shards than even most, if not all, target portals.

The Scheveningen Port Green Lighthouse (SPGL) portal is located at the Scheveningen beach. Depending on whom do you ask, people will say that Scheveningen is not a separate town but a part of Hague... or not. A bonus for nor non-native speakers - try to pronounce “Scheveningen” and not to break your tongue! One is fis for sure, the beach with its dunes this is a beautiful place. It is always windy there though. If you need to hack a hundred keys or babysit a shard, put something warm on.

Ironically, despite its color, this portal is a favourite portal of RES NL to collect shards onto. The number of shards that this portal has seen is uncountable. This portal is also quite often used by local RES to save Mermaids. Depending on other two anchors the resulting overseas field is typically 200k-300k MU up to a 34M MU. This portal has also got a little bit less famous brother just a hundred meters away from it - a red lighthouse (SPRL).

That pack of #lightman shards which ENL almost got scored on the Big Project was initially collected here by RES. First two shards were caught in the Netherlands, then more shards arrived. For two weeks non stop RES controlled each jump and the immunisation of the shard portals, let them jump in the Hague in dunes, to Madurodam park, the resistance pub Musicon, SPGL, SPRL. Aaaand…  everyone could breathe again when they finally were send to Island.
An effort and dedication that RES NL put into was enormous. I know this myself, I was babysitting the guys on intel.

After Iceland the shard pack went to Morocco, then to middle East, was blocked by a spoofer, stolen by ENL and sent to the Santa Rosa island. The rest of the story we know from the yesterday’s post about The Big Project.

Ingress Christmas Countdown: The "must know" portals. Day 16/24 #ingressCountdown
To understand the future, one must remember the past.

Name: Beacon, The Big Project.
Description: A beacon overlook structure
Location: Santa Monica,  Los Angeles, CA, USA

Intel link: https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=34.017873,-118.502975&z=17&pll=34.017873,-118.502975

Importance: Big Project was the target portal for the #lightman shards.

+Stein Lightman was a +Niantic Project researcher, specialized in religion, history and shaper language (glyphs). He broke into sharp pieces and disappeared in the portal network the same as earlier +Devra Bogdanovich during #shonin series. #Lightman shards appeared on portals that were associated with ancient civilisation. There were 41 #Lightman shards in total.

First half of the #Persepolis anomalie series The Big Project  in LA was the RES target. The ENL target portal was  _The Rohan Stone_ in Taiwan.  Halfway through the series targets alignment was revered. The reversing of target alignment has never happened durgin shardwars before. Shard were jumping every 12 hours with an increased frequency closer to the end of the anomaly series. Both locations were known to be controlled by ENL.  It was clear from the beginning that with all the given circumstances the battle will be tough.

Although, it wasn’t  all that bad… The portal was located at a nice beach :) The “ BIG” in the portal name stands for the Beach Improvement Group Project.
Watch an impressive drone flight over this portal:
+A C

RES had a really hard time stopping ENL from scoring shards. SoCal RES went from being quite discouraged to gathering their efforts and fighting every jump, and whilst ENL used every last private portal they only could, they struggled. USA ENL, particularly west coast ENL, are well funded and connected, with more players, more boats and more helicopters. ENL played an amazing game and almost scored enough shards to win the persepolis series.

The anomaly was decided because on the last days the ENL sent  a shard train on Santa Rosa island (no signal, boat only, etc), just 145 kilometers off the Santa Monica coast. The train derailed because a large group of resistance were also on the island along with the ENL linkers.  The only reason RES could win persepolis is because SoCal RES went to extreme lengths to stop the shards on the last day.

There are rumours that initially the portal was called “The Big Project” but ENL renamed it and added the word “Beacon” to it. Can anyone confirm this?

Have you been to this place? Do you have a key? Did you fight for the Lightman shards on any site of Atlantic?

That portal is representing our Faction

It's the middle of the Universe :D probably only place I can find without any map.

Many people are unaware of the origin of Smurfs. Belgium gave the world not only its famous beer and chocolate. Those a cute blue cartoon character, who is also a symbol for the RES faction in #ingress, were also invented in Belgium. A key to Smurf portal is the number one must-have key for every RES agent. Especially after the #Darsana in Brussels this keys widespread as a souvenir key.  If you happen to be in Brussels, don’t miss your chance to hack a key yourself and take a selfie with the Schtroumpf, it is within walking distance from the main train station.

This portal represents the RES faction itself, but once was an anchor to a big field covering a large part of Europe. The challenges of having an anchor in the downtown of Brussels and cleaning through another capital (Vienna) were not the only achievement. RES managed to defend that field for an hour during the immunization period for this portal.

After the field went up, a message to recharge the Smurf went through all channels. And any agent who had this souvenir key started to recharge. This was probably the only spontanious mass recharge operation in the history of ingress. It was amazing to watch this portal remotely. There was no power-recharge back than, yet the portal stayed fully charged even under a heavy fire. ENL literally couldn't take it down for an hour. The field went down only after the Smurf was jarviced after the immunisation period was over.
