+Eli Fennell I hope the author is correct that Facebook and Google are working on providing better analytics, especially for better attribution tracking. It's essential to their ad business that marketers are able to justify ad spends.

Facebook's Trending topics to become more algorithmically based.
We’re making some changes to the Trending feature on Facebook that will make the product more automated.

Google Hangouts on Air to be folded into YouTube Live

From +Ana Hoffman

Hangouts On Air will no longer be available on September 12. Start using YouTube Live

Google is consolidating Hangouts On Air and YouTube Live - on September 12. http://bit.ly/2aX7wbJ

If you want to schedule new Hangouts On Air you will need to use YouTube Live.

Events cannot be scheduled on Google+ after September 12 and you will need to move existing events scheduled to happen after September 12 to YouTube Live.

Follow these steps to set up Hangouts On Air with YouTube Live:

Go to Live Streaming Events in Creator Studio.
Click New live event.
Select Quick (using Google Hangouts On Air).
Give your live stream a title.
Click Go live now or enter in details to schedule your event for later.
Use Hangouts to broadcast live.

You will continue to have access to your recorded event on YouTube. Google+ will have your event content available in read-only format in the Activity Log.

Google doesn't seem to know which way to go when it comes to video and messaging. A lot of people will also see this as another chunk of Google+ being lopped off.

State of Social Media Q2 2016

These reports from +Christopher Penn are always must-reading for social marketers. Thorough research and beautiful graphs, plus actionable takeaways.

This link takes you to the Twitter report, which then links to the Facebook report.

The 140 character social network released its Q2 2016 earnings. How did everyone’s favorite short attention span social network fare? Let’s check the numbers. Audience Growth After relatively robust growth in Q1, Q2 returned to more modest growth, not even cracking 1% quarter-over-quarter growth. Twitter added only 3 million new users (which, in the scheme…Read More →

Study finds that a large portion of the retweets for tweets with marketing-related hashtags are from fake or bot accounts.

While the study is interesting, and seems to confirm that for this set of hashtags there is indeed a huge amount of spam and bot activity, I don't agree with all of the author's conclusions.

His most valuable advice, in my opinion, is give much less weight to so-called vanity metrics (raw number of likes, follows, retweets) and more to real engagement (actual human responses and interactions) and the quality of traffic being driven to your site.
Hashtags have been around since the beginning of Twitter. But will any of the popular hashtags help your business or marketing? We think not.

Tsu Shut Down

I hate "I told you so" posts, so please know I'm hating myself right now ;-) I told you so.

Pyramid schemes are never sustainable long term business models (and please save your explanations of how Tsu was "not" a pyramid scheme). But when your scheme is to turn regular social media users into annoying spammers, your ultimate doom is really sealed.

How Do People Decide if Content Is Trustworthy?

+DEJAN SEO presents a survey of 1000 web users showing what they say they look for in evaluating the trustworthiness of a page of content.

It warmed my heart to see that the reputation of the Publisher and Author were very near the top of the list.
The list of signals web users rely on when deciding whether to trust online content or not.
