"In a massive operation, eight men – five Omani nationals and three Qatar nationals – were nabbed by the Hyderabad police on Wednesday. These men estimated to be in their 50s and 60s, one as old as 80 years old, were in the city to marry minor girls and traffic them to the Middle East."

On Indian Economy, for those interested.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Modinomics --
(1) Fiscal policy consolidation while increasing infra spend
(2) Monetary policy hawkishness and low inflation
(3) Structural reforms - GST, RERA, bankruptcy law
(4) Formalisation of economy - demonetisation, digitalisation
(5) State capacity creation and smart welfare
Let us quickly dive into each of the arrows, but before that a few words. Most developed economies' economists, especially of the free market persuasion, understandably focus on the third arrow above i.e. structural reforms, and to a slightly lesser extent on the first two: monetary and fiscal policy. But, and this is also understandable, the last two arrows above are ignored - because developed economies are already largely formal (firms and individuals mostly pay their share of taxes, and have access to organised credit etc), and their welfare states already have good infrastructure as well as basic competence, often developed over centuries. Hence, we can have grand philosophical debates of liberty vs equality in the modern West, with economic liberty having the upper hand in the Reagan/Thatcher era, and the pendulum now perhaps swinging the other way.
On the #TripleTalaq judgement today. Let's hope the government does not chicken out and puts its weight behind a law to end this regressive practice.
The tragedy in #Gorakhpur will at least put the spotlight on the ongoing dismal state of affairs in healthcare in UP, now that it is under a 'communal' government. If it were still under the 'secular' government, the #JapaneseEncephalitis death would still be business as usual. #Assam too has its share of dozens of JE deaths every year, and I too have lost a family member to the disease. Need to read up if anything has been done at all under the new BJP government in Assam.
Hopefully, it will also put the spotlight on how JE vaccination attempts are met with hostility, in some places in Assam and other States, because of misinformation and fear mongering spread by religious leaders, about the State using vaccine to make people impotent.
