Wondering At Times -- Fort Collins, Colorado
“He found himself wondering at times, especially in the autumn, about the wild lands, and strange visions of mountains that he had never seen came into his dreams.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

If We Are To Remember -- Moab, Utah
"If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them something more than the miracles of technology. We must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it."

“We must not only protect the country side and save it from destruction, we must restore what has been destroyed and salvage the beauty and charm. Once our natural splendor is destroyed, it can never be recaptured. And once man can no longer walk with beauty or wonder at nature, his spirit will wither and his sustenance be wasted.”

-- Lyndon B. Johnson, 36th President of the United States

Totality 2017 -- Glendo, Wyoming
One more photo of the total eclipse, as seen from the banks of the Platte River north of Glendo, Wyoming... If you zoom in and look closely, you can even see some detail on the surface of the moon, as well as a few solar flares in the 12-3 o'clock region. I previously posted a photo of the "diamond ring" phase of the eclipse here: https://goo.gl/W7oDsR.

Escape From Totality -- Glendo, Wyoming
The total solar eclipse of 2017 in North America as seen from the vicinity of Glendo, Wyoming yesterday... This was taken just a few seconds after totality had ended, as the first burst of rays appeared over the edge of the moon. Totality itself was an incredible experience, but I thought the first few seconds just past totality were the most photographically interesting , because there's simply more going on, visually. You can even see a few solar flares in the 12 to 3 o'clock position.

It was amazing how instantly the entire experience changed between 99% totality and 100% totality. You knew the very instant that complete totality had been reached because it was literally as if someone had just flipped the light switch off, and everything changed from pseudo-daylight to pre-dawn in an instant, with the exception that the entire horizon (all 360º of it) glowed with a pre-dawn glow rather than just the eastern horizon. Crickets started chirping. The temperature dropped noticeably. The wind stopped. And it was altogether one of the most surreal experiences I've ever had. My only regret was that it was all so brief and rushed - my fingers were flying trying to find the best combination of camera settings and take as many photos as possible, and I was also doing my darnedest to just experience it as well. I was able to do both, but not with the leisure or calm I would've liked. Totality only lasted for 2 minutes and 27 seconds from my location.

At any rate, if you've never experienced a total eclipse, then it's totally worth doing so if you ever have the opportunity (no pun intended). :-)

Not Eclipsed Yet -- Fort Collins, Colorado
Your streams are about to be inundated with eclipse photos, so I thought I'd post a non-eclipse sun photo for some preemptive contrast. :) I even caught a few sun spots in this one, which you can also see via NASA's sunspot website:

https://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/sunspots/
https://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/synoptic/sunspots_earth/mdi_sunspots.jpg

Each of these "little" sun spots is larger than our Earth, for scale (!!).

Cheers, and enjoy the coming eclipse, for those of you in North America...

Waiting Behind The Dark -- Fort Collins, Colorado
“It was dark now, and broodingly sluggish. Like something supine waiting to spring, with just the tip of its tail twitching. Leaves stood still on the trees. An evil green star glinted in the black sky like a hostile eye, like an evil spying eye."

A Brief Apocalypse -- Bingham, Illinois
"With stammering lips and insufficient sound
I strive and struggle to deliver right
That music of my nature, day and night
With dream and thought and feeling inter-wound
And inly answering all the senses round
With octaves of a mystic depth and height
Which step out grandly to the infinite
From the dark edges of the sensual ground.

This song of soul I struggle to outbear
Through portals of the sense, sublime and whole,
And utter all myself into the air:
But if I did it, as the thunder-roll
Breaks its own cloud, my flesh would perish there,
Before that dread apocalypse of soul."
-- Elizabeth Barrett Browning

I'm not a big fan of coal-fired power plants, but I am a big fan of spectacular sunsets even if there's a coal-fired power plant in the background. ;) I took this photo on Christmas Eve in 2013 while standing in the front yard of my mom's house in southern Illinois. I had been reading a book next to the Christmas tree in our living room while my family (complete with forty million young nieces and nephews mad with Christmas excitement) was waiting for and/or helping prepare dinner, when I noticed a strange red glow filling the room. I glanced outside to see this incredible sunset, and after just a moment of staring drop-jawed at the sight, I jumped up and went to grab my camera. This intense light only lasted for a few brief minutes, but fortunately I was able to grab some shots during its peak. Together with the reflective furrows of overcast cloud, it made for one of the most spectacular sunsets I've ever seen. :)

Rock And Sun -- Arches National Park, Utah
“Men come and go, cities rise and fall, whole civilizations appear and disappear-the earth remains, slightly modified. The earth remains, and the heartbreaking beauty where there are no hearts to break....I sometimes choose to think, no doubt perversely, that man is a dream, thought an illusion, and only rock is real. Rock and sun.”
― Edward Abbey, Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness

Just A Little Further... -- Canyonlands National Park, Utah
"Go as far as you can see; when you get there, you'll be able to see farther."
-- J.P. Morgan

I definitely can't argue with ole J.P.'s logic... ;-)

This is a view of Canyonlands National Park as seen from a high vantage point along the very winding, western rim, looking towards the LaSal mountains in the distant background. I'm normally not a fan of showing any people in my landscape shots, but I thought I'd leave the man in the frame just to add a very simple (and ultimately insufficient) sense of scale for the vastness of this incredible canyon lands region.
