Today We commemorate International Sex Worker Day

International Sex Workers Day, on June 2 of each year, honours sex workers and recognises their often exploited working conditions.

In 1975, on 2nd June, about 100 sex workers occupied Saint-Nizier Church in Lyon, France, to express their anger about their criminalised and exploitative living conditions.

On 10th June at 5 o'clock the Church was brutally raided and cleared by police forces.  This action sparked a national movement, and the day is now celebrated in Europe and around the world.

The International Union of Sex Workers (IUSW) campaigns for the human, civil and labour rights of those who work in the sex industry.

The current organisation of the sex industry presents many problems for workers and the communities within which the industry operates.

Improving the legal framework and self-organisation of sex workers is to the benefit of all parties. Recognising both the rights and responsibilities of sex workers is the only sensible way forward.

May 28 is the International Day of Action for Women’s Health!

May 28th has been commemorated by women ’s health advocates and their communities since 1987 and has been crucial in the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) movement building.

May 28 provides a great opportunity to remind our government leaders that Women’s Health Matters.

With the recent adoption of Agenda 2030, governments have acknowledged gender equality and women’s empowerment as crucial to sustainable development, while reaffirming the outcomes from the ICPD Programme of Action and the Beijing Platform for Action.

Central to women’s empowerment, however, is the respect, protection, and fulfilment of the human rights of women and girls in all their diversity leading a healthy life, including their sexual and reproductive rights, and acknowledging the actual needs of all women and girls in all their diversities!

Go Out and Celebrate Sun Screen Day in the Sun!

Sun Screen Day educates and brings awareness to the importance of using sunscreen to protect yourself and your children from harmful UV rays from the sun.

This day is held on May 27th, just in advance of the summer and vacation season.

Ultraviolet rays from the sun is a serious risk to your health. With the steady depletion of the ozone layer above the earth, more and stronger UV rays get through.

Overexposure to the sun can cause a number of health problems. It can cause skin cancer, and sunspots. It can also result in premature aging of your skin.

Doctors and medical professionals advocate the use of sunscreen, to guard against health problems. They recommend an Skin Protection factor(SPF) of 15 or more. Sunscreens should be used for all outdoor activities, including swimming.

And yes, sun screens should be used on cloudy days. UV rays can penetrate through the clouds.

Go Out, Enjoy, with the safety of sun screens and help spread awareness!

Celebrating Redheads & Sharing Awareness on Ginger Discrimination.

May 26, It's World Redhead Day!

"I personally find women with red hear really attractive, when I was younger I secretly had a crush on Nicole Kidman for a long time."

With hues ranging from deep burgundy to bright copper, only one to two percent of people around the world have natural red hair.

Whether the color is au natural or courtesy of a favorite hair salon, red locks are beautiful.

World Redhead Day not only celebrates redheads around the globe but also “highlights” the stigma and discrimination some “gingers” face, like:

✅ Redheads are often stereotyped as having feisty personalities with fiery tempers. Some face discrimination and bullying simply due to the color of their hair.

✅ Thousands of redheads recently took part in the Ginger Pride Rallyto march against bullying and name calling due to having red hair.

✅ Even one of the world’s most eligible bachelors, Prince Harry, admitted to being bullied because of his hair color.

✅ Dating site,, recently pulled an ad that suggested red hair and freckles are “imperfections” after receiving a slew of complaints.

✅ Kick A Ginger Day, a satirical day inspired by the popular television series, "South Park", left some middle school children with red hair “beaten and bleeding” after being targeted by their classmates in 2015.

Bullying, discrimination and/or physical violence should not be tolerated. Share awareness today.

Help Women By Spreading Awareness Of Fistula!

Obstetric fistula is one of the most serious and tragic injuries that can occur during childbirth.

It is a hole between the birth canal and the bladder or rectum caused by prolonged, obstructed labour without treatment.

🎙Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon🎙

"Fistula has virtually been eliminated in most high and middle income countries around the world, so we know that it can be eliminated in every country".

The condition typically leaves women incontinent, and as a result they are often shunned by their communities. Sufferers often endure depression, social isolation and deepening poverty.

Many women live with the condition for years – or even decades – because they cannot afford to obtain treatment.

An estimated 2 million women in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, the Arab region, and Latin America and the Caribbean are living with this injury, and some 50,000 to 100,000 new cases develop each year.

Yet fistula is almost entirely preventable. Its persistence is a sign that health systems are failing to meet women’s essential needs.

In its resolution the General Assembly calls on the international community to use the International Day to significantly raise awareness and intensify actions towards ending obstetric fistula.

We Need to Stop This Thread on World Biodiversity Day!

The current decline in biodiversity is largely the result of human activity and represents a serious threat to human development.

The International Day for Biological Diversity (or World Biodiversity Day) is a United Nations–sanctioned international day for the promotion of biodiversity issues. It is currently held on May 22.

Protecting biodiversity is in our self-interest. Biological resources are the pillars upon which we build civilizations.

Nature's products support such diverse industries as agriculture, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, horticulture, construction and waste treatment.

The loss of biodiversity threatens our food supplies, opportunities for recreation and tourism, and sources of wood, medicines and energy. It also interferes with essential ecological functions.

Despite mounting efforts over the past 20 years, the loss of the world's biological diversity, mainly from habitat destruction, over-harvesting, pollution and the inappropriate introduction of foreign plants and animals, has continued.

Urgent and decisive action is needed to conserve and maintain genes, species and ecosystems, with a view to the sustainable management and use of biological resources.

Welcome To World Metrology Day!

Metrology is the science of measurement. Metrology includes all theoretical and practical aspects of measurement.

Metrology is defined by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) as "the science of measurement, embracing both experimental and theoretical determinations at any level of uncertainty in any field of science and technology".

Metrology plays a central role in scientific discovery and innovation, industrial manufacturing and international trade, in improving the quality of life and in protecting the global environment.

World Metrology Day is an annual celebration of the signature of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875 by representatives of seventeen nations.

The Convention set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial and societal applications.

The original aim of the Metre Convention - the world-wide uniformity of measurement - remains as important today as it was in 1875.

The theme for World Metrology Day 2016 is ‘Measurements in a Dynamic World’. The topic was chosen to align with the increasing rapid pace of change in measurement science, and indeed of the world around us.
