Google Plus Revisited: On Naming Your Files And Archiving Them
While searching for a specific topic I replied to, I came across this brief post which in this period of cleaning out documents and archiving files might be worth a repost in my Google Plus Revisited Collection, in which I repost some of the posts I've made throughout the years here on #GPlus.

Sadly these badly named filenames, especially for installers, is still an issue. Worse is that I myself still haven't adopted just a single naming convention, and take too little time to prune, rename and organise my files. Combined with storing backups, this probably results in way too many duplicates and wasted diskspace...
File organisation and generic filenames
Since I often visit locations where Internet bandwidth is limited, I tend to archive the various installers in case I need them later and don't feel like downloading them again over a slow connection.
Of course there are a couple of downsides to this, such as the disk space they use up, the installers might get out-of-date, and the need to organise them into a logical file structure.

Since I had to install a new harddisk in my Mac, I've been slowly copying data off the old disk. As that old disk has been used for several years, and I have gotten a bit lazy with the proper filing of the files into folders, the downloads and documents directory has become a bit of a mess.
So, now I'm re-sorting my files, throwing away outdated and duplicate files and...

figuring out what the hell half of those files were
I might be lazy with organising my files, but some developers are also kinda lazy with naming their downloads/installers.
I've come across a bunch of generically named files such as installer.msi, dsajhnu3.dmg.zip, updater.pkg, webplayer-mini.dmg
After a quick Google search for the filename, I found out that the latter probably belongs to +Unity.
It made me wonder why these developers wouldn't include their product/brand name in the actual file (Unity-webplayer-mini.dmg), so in the event the file remains somewhere on the user's harddisk, it will instantly give an idea of what the file is, and if it is worth keeping, updating, or removing. 

I guess I could always just blindly throw away the file, but it might also end up being an application that I like, and of which the official source has dropped off the 'net.

Or perhaps I should be less lazy myself, and rename the files directly after downloading. ;-)

Classic Game Postmortem: Elite by David Braben
Lately I've been watching more Classic Game Postmortem talks from Game Developer Conference editions throughout the years. They're usually excellent talks to have on in the background, and pick up some lessons picked up throughout the years by established game developers, and to learn some more about classic games you might've loved playing to death one or more decades ago.

While I was talking to a friend of mine, +Michael Vink, about the GDC talks, I found out he hadn't watched the one about Elite. Since he likes to play Elite: Dangerous, I looked up my old post in which I shared the talk hosted at the GDC Vault, and figured I'd feature it in my Google Plus Revisited Collection again.

Whether you grew up with the game, like playing the latest game in the Elite series, are into retrogaming, or just like hearing stories from developers, this talk likely has some interesting parts for you.

David Braben looking back at Elite
Interesting post-mortem of the classic BBC Micro videogame Elite by David Braben, given as a presentation at the Game Developers Conference of 2011.
He talks about the entire development process, from wanting to break away from the 'coin-drop' concept (arcade) games of that time used, to 'just' 3D spaceships flying on his screen, to a finished product, finding a publisher and getting it ported to 17 platforms (including the C64, MSX, Amiga and Electron).
Topics of conversation also include the various optimisation techniques they used, which for instance allowed their entire universe to fit in just 6 bytes and their entire text in 2k.

At first I thought the nearly 60 minutes presentation would be a drag to sit through, but it was over before I knew it, and left me wanting more.

Google Plus Revisited: Cordyceps - attack of the killer fungi
Since we've been using #GooglePlus for many years, I thought it'd be interesting to look at some of our earlier posts, and reshare them in this new #Collection, #GooglePlusRevisited. While the collection will mostly consist of posts from my own posts, I'll also try to include posts by others that stood out to me.

A discussion earlier this week about #parasites such as #ToxoplasmaGondii brought my attention again to this video (and my post), and rewatching it again kinda gave me the creeps. Definitely a content warning if you don't like watching ants, fungus and/or parasites.

As usual, the Right Honourable Richard Samuel Attenborough, Baron Attenborough, CBE, did a wonderful job documenting how #Cordyceps, a fungal parasite, infects ants and various other critters/animals and uses their infected bodies to try and spread the spores to the rest of the animal's community, and how in turn the community tries to keep the victims as far away from their environment.
