Harataonga coastlal walkway is approximately 4 hours one way, winding through regenerating forest with magnificent views. Harataonga Bay is on the east coast of Great Barrier Island, in 2007 it was transformed into a busy production village and film set for the movie Castaway. The site is now completely restored and visitors to Harataonga can once again enjoy the peaceful charm of Harataonga Bay. It starts at the Harataonga campsite and head west across the stream and paddocks, through the gate and follow the track. There are magnificent coastal views and the track ends at Aotea Rd at the south end of Okiwi.

Harataonga is a surf beach located on the northeast coast of New Zealand's Great Barrier Island. Dragon Island provides the bay some protection from the Pacific Ocean from the East and South East, with further protection provided by the larger Rakitu (Arid) Island to the North. Harataonga has a meandering slow running creek disgorging through and over the sand at the northern end of the beach. Both ends of the beach have rocky outcrops and are popular for rock fishing. The Department of Conservation manage a camping ground which is tucked away out of sight from the bay.

Great Barrier Island lies in the outer Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand, 100 km north-east of central Auckland. In 2013, it was inhabited by 939 people, mostly living from farming and tourism. The majority of the diverse environments is administered as nature reserve by the Department of Conservation. For thousands of years it has sheltered Auckland's harbour from the relentless swells of the Pacific Ocean, creating a boating paradise. The eastern shore of Great Barrier Island faces the ocean with high cliffs and long white surf beaches; the western side offers deep sheltered harbours and calm sandy bays.

Urupukapuka island is the largest of all the 140 islands in the Bay of Islands. Island was previously settled by the Ngare Raumati tribe, one of the oldest tribes of the area. In 1839, William Brind, a whaling captain, claimed to have purchased 150 acres of Urupukapuka from Rewa, a chief of the Ngapuhi tribe, for one mare valued at 45 English pounds. The claim was invalidated when Rewa claimed that the mare represented a mere deposit and not the whole lump sum amount. In the later 1800s, two Europeans leased some of the land on Urupukapuka for grazing and began to clear the island and build a fenceline. In 1927, Otehei Bay had become the base of the fishing expeditions of the American author Zane Grey, and a world famous fishing resort was later established there.
