He's come for you, what will you do, He'll slash you and rip you and cut you in two

for today's 31 days of halloween i invade your nightmares with my latest self portrait fresh out of Elm street

i have always loved the Freddy movies–especially the first ones–as it was a new style of killer and one that was virtually impossible to escape as he was always waiting for you to fall asleep...and we all have to sleep at some point

so this goes out to my love of horror and was a another way to push myself in my digital art as all of the makeup was drawn in photoshop

When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies?

yesterday yet another album was revealed from the 20th round of the Chrysta rae photography scavenger hunt and the word for this album was cinematic

I pondered and even completely shot something for this particular word and then I reversed gears and shot something totally different, I made an image that I have wanted to create for most of my life

growing up we had in our house a slender, wooden statue of Don Quioxte that stood on a small table near my room. I was always fascinated by the statue and more so the story of Don Quixote as a man of great imagination and conviction, a man of determination despite his ultimate shortcomings and a man who was unafraid to put everything he had into his ideals. I see a lot of myself in him–right along with the questionable sanity part–and it is in his spirit of unbridled imagination that I feel I am able to peel away the “real world” and bring about much of the art I create

my parents were always supportive of my creative ventures and never tried to steer me away from pursuing them. They encouraged me to do my art from an early age and I have them to thank for giving me that freedom and allowing my imagination to evolve and prosper. As I grew older I started buying porcelain figures of Don Quioxte for my mother, perhaps as a subliminal way of thanking her for allowing me to pursue the windmills in my head and tilting the great beasts and she always loved receiving them.

I still have the figures I gave her as well as the original wooden one that stood guard outside my room. I have added more figures to the collection as I have come across them in my travels and am always on the hunt for new ones as he is a figure that embodies much of what motivates me every day and I never want to forget that spirit of imagination no matter what others around me might think

many years ago I had a vision of the image you see here and I wanted to one day create it, but only if I felt I could do it the justice it deserved as I felt it was to be one of the most important and personal images I might ever create. But unlike in the story it is clear that Don Quioxte is indeed defeating all the windmills he has come across as he readies himself for the next one to challenge as this is how I often times see myself. I love a good challenge–even if the challenge is all in my head–and I am always sizing up my imagination to see just what new Quixotic adversary I will be tilting next.

Will it some day lead me to my own insanity much like Don Quixote? Will this endless pursuit break my soul? Who knows? But what I do know is I will continue to pursue my passion to create art for as long as I am still breathing

Maybe self-improvement isn't the answer, maybe self-destruction is the answer

for this month's art of self portraiture challenge we have the theme of duality

we want you to show yourself, with yourself in a way that perhaps shows two sides of your personality. this here is my shot for it and it shows that even though i can be refined, i am still a little rough around the edges

being i am a moderator for the community i am not eligible to actually enter the monthly competition, but as moderators we like to add our spin on each month's challenges to hopefully inspire you all to give it a go as well. if you would like to give it a shot you can find details about this month's challenge and where to enter you submission here:

why so serious?

this week for the art of self portraiture's self portrait sunday event we had the theme of not so serious

and if you know me then you know how very serious i am all the time, then you know how very difficult this theme was for me to attempt...i'm serious, just kidding....no i'm serious, just kidding

anyways, here is me not being serious

i know the steak is cold, but it's wrapped in plastic

for this month's art of self portraiture challenge we have the theme of paper or plastic?

unfortunately for myself i chose plastic in this twisted dual self portrait that is a bit of a metaphor for myself going forward. i am slowly but surely viewing my art in new ways and trying to get some order to my processes and how i go about creating in general

one of my biggest inhibitors is my perpetual procrastination but i have come to realize that my procrastination is in many ways a byproduct of wanting to create so much and having so many ideas, that i never actually start anything because i fear i won't be able to get it all done...so i end up doing nothing instead and then live with the guilt of not creating...yeah i got issues

so this image is a representation of disposing of that procrastination and moving forward with my art in a more productive way. funny thing is, i almost didn't do this shot last night because of said procrastination

you still have time to add your own spin on this month's challenge so get a self portrait together and see +Lotus Carroll's post on how to upload it here:

it's so hard, to say goodbye, to yesterday

for today's self portrait sunday we paid respect to +Michael Albrecht a friend and fellow photographer who often participated in self portrait sunday events whom we recently lost to cancer. Michael was a super nice guy that i had the pleasure of getting to hangout with on numerous occasions and an awesome photographer

i took the opportunity to do a double tribute to not only honor Michael, but to reignite a series i had been doing since the passing of my mother several years ago as a tribute to both my mother and my father's memory as they meant so much to me and so much to the person/husband/father i have become

if you would like to donate to Michael's family for funds to have his cremation services you can still do so here: https://www.gofundme.com/2qxspck

crimson and clover, over and over

i was digging through my albums here on G+ and realized i had never shared this shot

i created it for the word crimson in the last round of +Chrysta Rae photography scavenger hunt and since i was mentoring for the hunt i couldn't officially enter it and hence never shared it

anyways, since it's all full of blood and stuff, i figured it would be a good shot to share for the halloween season even though it is not really that scary of a shot
