For Science!

Want to work on a NASA-funded project for science? +CosmoQuest has a new project where you can help identify things seen in photographs taken by astronauts on the International Space Station. It's a great way to help make these images more useful to scientists all over the world!

In its youth the Moon had a thin atmosphere. It has long since evaporated away, but it left behind pockets of ice and other volatiles that may help us survive on our sister world.

Big Badda Boom

Type Ia supernovae play a critical role in our understanding of the universe, so it is important that we understand just how they occur. Now new research shows they could be triggered by the build up of helium on the surface of a white dwarf.

Sun-Centered Galaxy

There's an interesting problem in astronomy. When we measure the motion of a star, it is relative to the motion of the Sun. We can't measure the motion of the star relative to something else, such as the center of our galaxy. So how do we know that stars in the Milky Way orbit the center of the galaxy?

This Boy is Ignorance, this Girl is Want

I used to be amused by emails claiming Nibiru is going to kill us or the Earth is flat. I'm not amused any more.

To the Moon and Beyond

The Big Science Kickstarter campaign has reached its goal! But the more we can build, the better we can make it. If you haven't contributed yet and want to, we're down to the last couple days.

And to everyone who has contributed so far, thanks for making this a reality!

The Final Countdown

The Big Science kickstarter is on its last 10 days. We're at 77% of our funding goal, and only need about $3,000 to make it happen. So far, most of our support has come from Facebook followers. Some of you who follow me on Google+ also follow me on Facebook, so you've been seeing this on both ends. But most of my followers are on G+, so I know y'all love science too.

If you've been thinking about contributing, now would be a great time. It's also a great time to share the project with your G+ friends. We're getting tantalizingly close, but Kickstarter is all or nothing. We can only make it happen with your support.

They're SO Fluffy!

Some galaxies are really diffuse. But how can they hold themselves together against the pull of other galaxies?
