This one is for you, Axl Aveursus!

RUSSIANS in NORTH AMERICA: Known as Fort Ross, (California) this Western-sounding name is actually a short version of "Rossiya", or Russia. It was established in the winter of 1812 by Russian-Alaskans who were seeking warmer climes in which to grow provisions to support the Russian colonists in colder Alaska where the growing season was much shorter. Remember, Imperial Russia owned Alaska until it was sold to the United States Government in 1867 for the sum of merely 7.2 million dollars, which in today's value is approximately ONLY 121 million dollars (people buy houses for that much today!)
The establishment of the fort took place while Great Britain was engaged in war with the young United States over on the East Coast and with the Spanish vice-royalty of Alta California not even aware of the fort's creation until well after it was fortified. (Read more about the history of this most southerly of Russian outposts on the North American mainland at http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/russians-establish-fort-ross). The fort has been carefully restored and the cemetery outside of the palisades is still there, with as many Orthodox markers as possible on the graves of long ago.
