Red Trunks (Quantum) vs Blue Trunks (Classical)

The battle between classical (binary) computing and the new kid in the ring, quantum computing, continues. With terabytes of memory a classic super computer can simulated 56 qubit system.

"Just when it was looking like the underdog, classical computing is striking back. IBM has come up with a way to simulate quantum computers that have 56 quantum bits, or qubits, on a non-quantum supercomputer – a task previously thought to be impossible. The feat moves the goalposts in the fight for quantum supremacy, the effort to outstrip classical computers using quantum ones."

Open Source Alternatives to MS Office

"Office Suites are a mandatory part of any operating system. It is difficult to imagine using a desktop OS without office software. While Windows has MS Office Suite and Mac OS X has its own iWork apart from lots of other Office Suites especially meant for these OS, Linux too has some arrows in its quiver. In this article, I list the best Microsoft Office alternatives for Linux."

Flying Taxi's & Cops in Dubai

"The self-styled "Future City" just held the first test flight for its autonomous aerial taxi (AAT) service, showing off the craft that will ferry passengers around the city for what the Dubai Road and Transport Authority (RTA) is calling the world's first self-flying taxi service."

"The Dubai police, which already has luxury patrol cars, self-driving pursuit drones, and a robot officer, just announced it will soon have officers buzzing around on hoverbikes, which look like an early version of the speeder bikes used by the scout troopers on Endor in Return of the Jedi. "

Ubuntu Drops Unity

I never warmed up to Unity so it's no big loss for me personally. Curious to see what they did to GNOME though to make it "look and feel like Unity". I still prefer Mate, or KDE.

"Ready for a really new Ubuntu desktop? Then start downloading Ubuntu 17.10 today. Canonical has abandoned its Unity interface in favor of the new GNOME 3.26 desktop, and has replaced its homegrown Mir display server with Wayland. That may sound like a radical change, but if you look closely at the new Ubuntu 17.10, Artful Aardvark, desktop, it will look familiar. That's because while the underlying technologies have changed, Ubuntu's developers have customized its default GNOME desktop to look and feel like Unity."

Recover Your Mind From Technology

I have been meaning to write a more substantial post or article about some of the psychology behind our mobile device addiction and how to break free, but JP Sears covers some of the key suggestions I was going to make. His videos are often a combination of sarcasm, humour and valid perspectives on spiritual and wellness issues.

One of the FIRST and most important steps to regaining your own mind and breaking free from the habitual drain on our lives and thoughts which a "beeping" device brings, is to TAKE CONTROL of your communications. By automatically responding to every beep, stopping what you are doing to respond to a text or new post on Facebook, our brains reinforce an addictive and reactionary pattern. The more you allow yourself to be controlled by your devices, the less control you have over your own thoughts, emotions and actions. Personally I solve this issue by disabling all notifications on my mobile devices and using them when I CHOOSE, and not when someone else wants to hijack my time, communications or thoughts. JP's suggestions may be a bit more more realistic for some of you, which is to set time aside each day to respond to communications, rather than each time they come in. Watch the video where +JP Sears offers up his own suggestions on Winning Your Mind Back.

1: Communicate in batches

2: Turn your phone off for 30 minutes before, and at the end of each day.

3: Practice Deliberate Intent: Ask yourself what is the reason to touch your phone at that moment. If you cant find a good reason, put it down. Sort of a mindful approaching to how you use your device

Linux: Secure Out of The Box

"All this to say: if you eliminate potential attack vectors, avoid shady parts of the web, steer clear of stray USB drives, drop bad security habits and develop good security habits, then there isn’t much to gain from antivirus software."

Hey Pet (Photo) Lovers!! A Gift From Google

Google's use of AI is only going to grow and we will continue to see all sorts of cool toys and things coming from the Googleverse. Here's a great one for all you pet lovers, especially those who take lots of photo's of their pets!

Facial recognition for animals/pets!

"Google today launched a new feature that makes it easier to find pet pictures in Google Photos. The feature automatically seeks out pet faces and groups them in folders, just like it does people. You can label the photos with your pet’s name once they are grouped and there’s no need to type “dog” or “cat,” like before. To see the photos, simply type in Chester’s name into the search box."

New Healthcare Trend - Bring Your Own Data

"Anupam Goel has a big prediction: More and more patients will bring their own medical data into appointments with doctors and caregivers. Goel, chief medical information officer for Advocate Health Care, a 12-hospital health system in Illinois, is not alone in saying that such a consumer movement is percolating. "
