Borsch / Borscht

This beet and cabbage red soup is a delicious belly warmer on Moscow's colder days, served with or without meat, potato, herbs (usually dill) and a dollop of smetana, Russian sour cream. Accompanied with a piece of rye bread or garlic bread topped with melted cheese, this dish is hearty enough to serve as a meal, although it is usually eaten as a starter. A staple of Russia cuisine, it would be an offense to leave Moscow without trying this soup at least once– although its surprisingly tasty flavour will certainly leave you wishing you had tried more local variations. Other common Russian soups to try are ukha, a seasoned fish and vegetable broth, and schi, a cabbage-based broth.

I'm always a bit wary when people ask me what the "best" is of any food category, as it is obviously quite a subjective matter. However when ever anyone asks me what my favorite is I have no problem sharing an opinion. Today, I treated myself to what is easily my favourite sandwich on God's good earth, the justly legendary #19 Langer's Delicatessen-Restaurant in Los Angeles. A perfect, if stomach bursting, combination of pastrami, house made coleslaw, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing and superb rye bread that is made for them and re-baked in house to give the crust a wonderful bite. I may have to put a few extra miles on the Fitbit this afternoon, but it will be worth every step.

Want to try a refreshing and authentically Russian drink this summer? Mors is a 100% natural beverage made with real berries. Our favorite is the traditional cranberry kind. But you can also get Mors made from lingonberries, blueberries and strawberries.
