Strike A Pose

This little guy is a Namoi River Snapping Turtle and this species was thought to be all but extinct in this region of North West NSW, Australia. These turtle are endemic to the upper reached of the Namoi River and they have not been seen for decades. It was great to see this little turtle climbing around the rocks after all these years of wondering. He was very curious and quite the poser and I had no problem sneaking up within a few meters from him to get the shot. I really like this photo and how it appears that the turtle is smiling with those cute lips it was quite a moment to interact with a wild animal in this way and especially one as special as this.

Cheeky Monkey

This cheeky Balinese long-tailed macaque was showing plenty of attitude when I was hiking up in the hills of Ubud in Bali. Some of the human like behavior of these monkeys blew my mind and it was just like photographing a young child. It was very entertaining though.

Green Winged Macaw

This amazingly beautiful Green Macaw was flying around the jungles of Bali and would come in to feed from this tray every morning and afternoon. As far as parrots and Macaws go they don't come much bigger then these Greens, amazing to watch these massive birds in action flying around with their 1.2m wingspans. Although not native to Bali these birds have made themselves at home in similar conditions that they would be living in back over in South America and hopefully they enjoy it because these birds live for over 60 years.

Zebra Finch

This image is a male Zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) and is one of Australia's most common finch and is found mainly through central Australia. They are a very social bird and love to sing. Each male bird will sing a unique song and will teach their sons this song and they will learn it and add their little twist to make it their own.

Snake in the grass

This beautiful slippery creature is Australia's Jungle Python (Morelia spilota cheynei). They grow up to 2.1m and are a very gentle and calm critter. They are only found in Queensland's rain-forest regions and make excellent pets as is the one pictured here...if you are into that sort of thing that is! This is one of the most relaxed snakes I have ever handled.

Superb Fairy-wren

Meet this little Male Superb Fairy-wren (Malurus cyaneus), these little guys are an absolute pleasure to watch as they hop around the shrubs in search of insects or a mate. The Males have amazingly vibrant blue and black plumage, another amazing example of natures creativity. They are only found in the southeastern corners of Australia and are one of 12 species of Wren found in Australia.

Spotted Pardalote

This tiny ball of feathers is a Spotted Pardalote and is found in specific forested areas. It is only found in Australia and is one of our smallest birds. They are a very quite and timid species that seems to enjoy interaction with us featherless types. They survive on small insects and it is not uncommon for these birds to be found in the back yards of many Aussie homes and I actually had a pair nesting in a plant at the back door of the house for quite a few years. Very beautiful birds to watch and interact with urban life. This bird however was photographed up on the summit of Mt Kaputar and is a juvenile that has just got its adult plumage.

Just Hangin'

This angry critter is the Black Flying Fox found in the Northern Regions of Australia. They are one of the largest bats in the world with a wingspan of up to one meter wide. This particular one was found hanging around the river side mangroves up on the West Coast of Cape York Peninsular.

They love to eat eucalypt pollen but if this is not available they don't mind getting stuck into some fruit.

Grey Crowned Crane

The Grey Crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum) get the award for the most outrageous hair do of any bird I have seen.

These endangered species are a majestic creature that moves with purpose and grace. These cranes are only found in the dry Savannah of Africa, south of the Sahara desert. They do not migrate and a wander the plains and wetlands in search of food and a dance partner....they love to dance as an integral part of mating - as you would when you are dressed up like this! They grow to approx 1m tall with an impressive wing span of 2 meters. Another beautiful display of natures creativity.

Tawny Frogmouth

I stumbled across this little baby Tawny Frogmouth Owl when trekking through the forested areas of Australia's Cape York Peninsular.
It looked as though it had just left the nest as it did not attempt to fly instead taking the stance of freeze, look cute and just use those big eyes to get me through this encounter. It was probably thinking 'Nothing to see here...Nothing to see here...just keep moving along Mr!'
