Become a Glass Explorer on Tues April 15

Whoops. So... we’d planned to post this next week, but it looks like the cat's out of the bag now. Over the past several months, we’ve been trying out different ways to expand the Explorer program. Some of you signed up at Google I/O, some told us what you would do #ifihadglass , some were referred by a friend, some joined through their school or university. Our Explorers are moms, bakers, surgeons, rockers, and each new Explorer has brought a new perspective that is making Glass better. But every day we get requests from those of you who haven’t found a way into the program yet, and we want your feedback too. So in typical Explorer Program fashion, we’re trying something new.

Next Tuesday, April 15th at 6am PDT, we’re opening up some spots in the Glass Explorer Program. Any adult in the US* can become an Explorer by visiting our site and purchasing Glass for $1500 + tax – and it now comes with your favorite shade or frame, thanks to feedback from our current Explorers. The number of spots available is limited, so mark your calendar if you want to get in. You can find us on Tuesday at: http://google.com/glass/start/how-to-get-one

We’re excited to meet our new Explorers, and we can’t wait to hear your thoughts about Glass.

*To everyone outside the US... we know. Sorry :( We’re just not ready yet to bring Glass to other countries.

Did you consider lowering the price? ;-)

Still $1500?! You're kidding me right - Sony and Facebook are making major moves, Apple is right around the corner, and you're not making this a loss-leader? Wisen up google - drop it to sub 1K at least.+60

Speaking of shades or frames... what's the warranty look like on the shades? I had a run in with an errant door.  The shades were in my coat pocket at the time, and are now split down the middle.  Now I can barely use Glass outdoors because I rely on some kind of sunglasses to be able to see anything during daylight hours.
Jason Saunders2 years ago
+Google Glass Does that mean the existing Explorers, who have not yet purchased shades or frames will get one for free?  It's only fair right??+11

US only.... I'm so shocked -.-+1
Ryan Loebs2 years ago
Being an early adopter carries the cost (aside from the high sticker price) of not getting all of the incremental updates and fixes as problems or improvements are discovered.  The fact that Google even gave original explorers a free swap is above and beyond what they're required to do.

As for the continued high cost of the device: I assume Google wants people who are enthusiastic enough to pay $1,500 to help them continue to iron out the product.  They aren't trying to market this as a retail consumer device yet.
+32
TZig Adam2 years ago
+Lord Parker Google's based in USA, it's a USA site no matter what you say. just look at how many products Google gives domestically compared to the world l. +2
Joe Betsill2 years ago
+Ryan Loebs I can be enthusiastic about something without having $1500 lying around.+2

Please please tell me when gg is coming to the UK!+1

I'll gladly exchange my unused shade for a pair of frames.+1
Ryan Loebs2 years ago
+Joe Betsill Not saying you can't.  But they can't go based on people's word that they'll be a worthwhile candidate for the explorer program.  Aside from the level of commitment there's also the cost of manufacturing a small handful of devices at a time which I doubt is terribly cheap.+3
Steve McKee2 years ago
+TZig Adam I think you'll find Google is a US company with Data centres, employees and operations all around the planet. Saying Google is a US 'site' makes no sense..... Saying it is a US company does (marginally). +7

Zakery Kates2 years ago
ugh.... $1,500? Ugh... it's cool... but.... I was hoping for a price drop.
:(
+6
Ryan Loebs2 years ago
+Joe Betsill That being said, just because you have $1,500 lying around doesn't make you a good candidate either.  But people are /less/ likely to drop that kind of money just to troll the program and write a slam piece on it.+11
Mads Thomsen2 years ago
I'll bet they all sell out no matter the price. With this price they make sure that you really really want Glass. And get some cost of devopement covered. I have no problem with that. +4
Joe Betsill2 years ago
+Ryan Loebs But they can equate having money with being enthusiastic? Those two things are unrelated.

It's more about creating exclusivity, but if they're truly looking to "expand" the program, a surefire way is to lower the price, wouldn't you say? They certainly can't have both.

..and since I'm typing here-- for those people complaining about the free frames-- imagine how grumpy the last guy to buy them at $1500 will be before they drop to consumer prices. ;-)
+1
Well +Google Glass, if you have time and enough money after all those ($1500) buyers. Send one to me to test outside the US ;)
Holly Houser2 years ago
I would love to see those who already purchased the frames be given a one time chance to return the shades that came with their +Google Glass or be able to exchange them. #justsaying+7
So will there be a refund for those people who purchased frames? Seems a bit unfair to the early explorers.+7
Lester Walters2 years ago
+Joe Betsill I'm sure you would be an enthusiastic user, the point is google has to set the bar somewhere. Selecting criteria for beta testers can be difficult. Google chose price as one way to limit the beta audience.

Many people would like to try Glass, only a few are willing to pony up the $1500 required.
+1
Joe Betsill2 years ago
+Lester Walters Eh, I'm perfectly willing to do it, I just happen to be unable to. (Well, unable to responsibly pony it up.)

Robotics technician doesn't pay near well enough to feed my desire for cool new technology, I suppose. :-P
Dan Eaton2 years ago
Why can I not get this in the UK?
Mike Johnson2 years ago
I'm really interested, but not at $1500. That's just absurd. I know it's cutting edge tech and a ton of r&d went into it, but I'd have to wait until the price drops a bit. +5
Kevin P. Trovini2 years ago
Keep in mind that the price is for the program, not the device. As part of the Explorers group, you would be helping Google continue to develop and refine the product. Occasionally, there may be bugs, flaws, or other problems with a given device. That price tag is intended not only to weed out less interested candidates but also to defray to cost of  replacement devices (NOT if the Glass unit is damaged by misuse or accident, mind you!).

After a battery stem crack, V2 upgrade, and faulty display, I'm on my fourth device. I did not pay $1,500 each time--again, I paid for the program, not the device.
+10
Kevin P. Trovini2 years ago
Any eventual consumer model, with the additional benefit of economies of scale, will likely cost between $300 and $600 (about the same as a smartphone).

If you can wait, save the money. To be a part of the program, though, you can pay the premium for a limited-quantity digital device manufactured in small batches.

Smart move, this a a beta test folks. That's why it's still $1500. This is good news for those of us looking to spend $500.+1
Niels Lieman2 years ago
Dear Google are you aware of the fact that most people live outside the USA. I am happy to pay $1500, but travelling to NY just for glass is to much! +1
Lester Walters2 years ago
+Joe Betsill I know... It puts a huge dent in most people's budgets. I had to trim a few goodies out of mine to join the beta. $1500 makes you take pause. $1500 is more than most people want to pay for "coolness" One important question you have to ask is... what is your use case? It's not really good as a main camera... there are better ways to search the web, and get navigation help.

If you don't have a work or personal use case one would be hard pressed to justify the expense. Hopefully the retail version will have a more affordable price point.
+2
Danny Roa2 years ago
+TZig Adam I'm glad that Google is no Apple. +1
Jeff Metzger2 years ago
For everyone complaining about the price.

1. This is a development kit. Not the final consumer version. So if you are not a developer or an enthusiastic early adopter, don't buy it.

2. The price is high because this is produced in very small numbers and most likely assembled by hand.

How much do you think a limited run of a new phone would cost with all new parts?

3. High price limits the amount of people in the public beta.

We are all excited and eagerly awaiting the next big thing in mobile technology but good things come to those who wait. Usually cheaper better things :-)

Lester G. Santos2 years ago
+Joe Betsill IKR? I just got Glass and the prescription frames March 19th, it was $225 plus tax not counting the $536 for my prescription to be put in. I coulda just waited a few weeks and saved myself the extra dough.
The people complaining about the price, can you imagine that this is not in any how a source of revenue to Google compared to their Google Ads?
The price is set high so that people who would want to get glass for matters that people are judging glass right now for wouldn't think of that.
I don't think there is anyone ready to pay $1500 dollars to be able to take photos of people while they don't notice. And if he did the explorer program says that one's glass can be stopped to work any time Google feels the person using it is using it in a wrong manner (or that's how the terms were few months ago) and thus no-one would be a moron enough to burn $1500 dollars for no reason

Nope. Still too expensive.
Daniel Onofre2 years ago
+Abdias Quintana same! Then +Google Glass Goes and offers them for free it's quite unfair I think they should refund or give us a pair for free +2
With the explorer program still intact, this is making me think you guys have no plans this year for a consumer release. And if you do plan to, then anyone who pays $1500 now just to be told in a few months that the item is now commercially available for purchase at a cheaper price, will be burned... and burned badly. I really want to have a go at glass, but Im not ready to kick out $1500.
Spencer Kleyweg2 years ago
+Moray Souter I get that but you know that down the road Google will drop the price for consumers.
Spencer Kleyweg2 years ago
+Daniel Onofre +Abdias Quintana I think a free pair of frames would be great! I have been eyeing them since day one but as I wear both glasses and contacts, there is no real easy way to change them on-the-go.
Abdias Quintana2 years ago
+Daniel Onofre exactly!!!!! I feel disappointed.
Daniel Onofre2 years ago
+Spencer Kleyweg +Abdias Quintana yeah they should really do something I mean I was okay with paying for them but they doing this makes me regret getting the frames +Google Glass Should look into doing something for us who bought them +4
Abdias Quintana2 years ago
+Daniel Onofre for all explorers who previously ordered glass period. +3
Spencer Kleyweg2 years ago
+Daniel Onofre +Abdias Quintana How much did yours come out to? If I bought them now it would be upwards of $500 with prescription and if they gave frames for free, it would make it a lot cheaper. Also think about this, they are penalizing people with bad eyes by having to pay extra for both frames and lenses for something that they want easily accessible for everyone.
Russ Robinson2 years ago
I just want a left-eyed version...I'll save the money...but at this point its useless without being able to have a different side be used...do you hear me Google?!+5

Daniel Onofre2 years ago
+Spencer Kleyweg the frames came out to 250 and my prescription another 100 +2
Daniel Onofre2 years ago
+Michael Al-Megdad I sure hope they refund us our money so unfair! and also give previous explorers a free frame as well +1
+Daniel Onofre  This was their response to me ... Hey Michael, thanks for sharing your feedback and we're sorry you feel let down. We're making improvements to the Explorer Program all the time based on what our Explorers are saying. In this case, we heard from a lot of Explorers who are not using their Shade because they also purchased a frame, so we decided to try giving them a choice between either a Shade or a frame. We're continuing to listen and keep Explorer feedback in mind.+2
This is great news! Good luck to anyone looking to join the Explorers program next Tuesday, it's always great to meet new and existing Explorers!+1

Surely this pre-release program would benefit from, and be a benefit to, non-US users as well. We would like to help too.

Google are you kidding us. You got all the money and investors and you want consumers to shell out 1500 bucks. Are you guys high?
I have mixed feelings about glass. It's a business expense for my real estate company and I have actually sold a house with glass. Its paid for!The buyers never physically visited it I haven't been able to connect with clients with glass hangouts despite 2 support calls so I have to video and upload, not the same experience. I think hangouts ,seeing houses, inspections and the area in real time is the value of glass for me. I can just use my phone video or FaceTime otherwise. Taking the shades on and off from inside to out is a pain too. It's been worth the Money for me but is frustrating in lots of ways
+1
TZig Adam2 years ago
+HFB Advertising Agency this isn't a consumer product yet. It's still in beta. They only charged that high price so only people who are committed to helping Glass improve its brand and function will buy it.

The average person will end up wasting so much money on a product only to throw it in the garbage if they realize it's not fully developed.

+TZig Adam you're buying a prototype, not an actual product so the price is perfectly warranted.
Keith Barrett2 years ago
+TZig Adam +Lord Parker  Before a product like this can be shipped outside the country it has to pass governmental approvals, FCC testing, UL testing, etc. It's not Google's fault this takes time. THEN there are local laws for individual countries. Of course it makes more sense prototypes are available in the originating country first.

Yes I wish the price was lower. I think you'll like my view about the price:  http://youtu.be/1AmELpjeFn8?t=54m35s

And to Glass owners complaining they lost out on a frames option; I had to pay for my own travel at my own expense ($800) to NYC to pick up my Glass, despite that requirement being removed 30 days later and you get them shipped to you now. Am I entitled to a refund? When you buy any product, you buy it under the conditions that exist NOW. If you want more; exercise patience and buy later.

I know this invention is amazing, it is clever and in some way it is beautiful, however it is also scary and I am deeply concerned about its potential to invade privacy at wholesale levels. I am aware of Snowden and all of the subsequent fallout, the encryption tales of hacks and data strewn around the web, lack of privacy is seen by some, as a fait accomplii , get over it and move on, but if I am confronted, with a Google Glass wearer, who I can see is taking photos of me or my family , or video without my permission, I will tell you I am planning to give them one short warning, and then I intend  to smash that device off their face and I am prepared to wear the consequences. You can film or shoot anything but invading my personal life in whatever form it might be, and that I can have any power over,  is out full stop. So please, think hard before you let your machine invade my life because I will not stand by and let you do it.
But, I mean, where would Google be without Taiwan? Bring it!+1
Antonio Michael2 years ago
+David Whyte grow up like anybody cares to invade your life you conseeded prick just because somebody might be taking pictures and our video around you at one point in time don't mean there taking them off you+1
David Whyte2 years ago
Antonio.....sorry you feel that way. Our laws and protocols are different than America (or whatever country you are in), however we have to learn to deal with tech as it comes up. That should not mean we have to accept everything or agree with everything, or think its "cool" . If you stopped to consider what this might come to, perhaps you might have a different view. BTW,  it is "conceited". and the view,  has nothing to do with me personally, so much as the wearer, believing they have the right to do as they please with camera shot and video.
Sounds like you don;t have children but appear quick to fly into some childish rage . My view is a result of reading about the subject and related tech enough to feel it is not ill informed.
Also, it has to do with a feeling of impending powerlessness about what Google Glass can be used for in not so positive ways. Maybe you come from a country that allows citizens to walk around with guns. That in itself is insane to me, and over the past 15 years of contemporary US history, the number of mass killings and shootings is frightening...imagine Google glass being hi-jacked (stolen)  and then used to film a mass shooting at a primary school or college or various other nefarious events like a gang killing or a gang rape. I mean, if you come back to me here with just a dirty mouth, I' ll know who you are but consider the wider view not just your personal take on someone daring to question for others, what people in the US seem to consider an inalienable right. Not all countries have the same views as Americans and not all countries have similar beliefs or culture and so if you can't understand that, I guess you are going to remain as your comment.
Have a good day.

Here's the reply I got, because buying a second pair of Glass is so logical..

Hey Chad,

Thank you so much for reaching out to us!  Yes, we will be offering Glass to new Explorer's for a limited time.  You are more than welcome to purchase another pair at that time as well.   Unfortunately at this time we are only offering the Frames/Accessory offer to Explorer's who sign up during the 24 hour period on the 15th while supplies last.

Thank you so much for your excitement and enthusiasm for Glass and thanks for your response!

Ottima idea per gli abitanti in America... forse è da migliorare il prezzo che in questo condizioni può essere uno dei maggiori punti deboli dei Glass... non vedo l'ora di averli anche qui in Italia... Thanks Google!

I still think $1500 is about three or more times what they should cost....

My concerns in order of importance are:
1. Battery life
2. Battery life
3. Battery life
4. Ergonomics of the above-and-to-the-side display
5. Battery life
6. Resolution
7. Battery life
8. Reliance on a cell phone
9. Battery life
10. Still limited compatibility with prescription glasses.

Well I would never be able to afford the $1500 of the Explorer edition so the unsurprising news of it not being international isn't very disappointing, however I seriously hope that unlike android's "tap&pay" function, glass will be released in other countries as the consumer edition at the same time as in the US. Else people are going to make a killing on eBay...
+TZig Adam umm Google has no brand prestige? What? Android now runs on 79% of phones worldwide (shows the word: Google, on startup no matter the brand) I highly doubt that the majority of Internet users has never used Google's search engine which sort of displays their name in the middle of the page, and all of Google's research is usually at the top of the tech news around the world... Someone made the statement you are paying for the Program, not the glasses.  I don't agree.  I'v been in many betas over the years for hardware and software, companies large and small, and was never asked to buy the hardware or software, or pay a fee of any kind. This is Google here, you have to figure they can run this program with their own people administering it and furnish the devices for far less.
Thomas Phifer2 years ago
@Christopher W Falco Well one aspect of charging users for the device/program is that you're more likely to be dealing with testers who are serious about the program rather than people who get a free device and then never use it or don't provide feedback/value to the program.
Drew Colpurs2 years ago
A lot of hate here. Let me try to speak on Google's behalf (as a fan of Google).

Glass is not yet on an assembly line, and this is because it's being tested. They're getting feedback so they can add minor redesigns and adjustments before they start producing them by the thousands. This is why it's still so expensive. It's U.S. only for a mass variety reasons, beyond Google being american (which does play a role). America has the largest, and one of the freest markets in the world. Also, shipping to foreign markets imposes foreign regulations, export/import taxes, laws, etc. It's not worth the fees, hassle, and approval for a device which is unfinalized and may have to repeat the process once it has the finished model.

How much is too much ?
Drew Colpurs2 years ago
+Paul Williams I know, right? It's all been going downhill ever since Kodak and Canon started making affordable disposable cameras. I think we can all see how something as noticeable and trackable as Google Glass will increase the amount of discreet and untraceable underground rings of kids abusing one another. It's all so obvious now.+1

I really want to get one , its a life-or-dead matter. USD 1,500 its a logical price (technology + early time). #ifihadglass  i'll develop for it and use them in my concerts.
I don't agree. Beta test communities I've been a part of have had a love of the technology and a strong desire to test and improve the product. All this 1.5k price tag does is put it out of the reach of the general public.

Sent from my iPhone
Drew Colpurs2 years ago
+Christopher W Falco Actually, yes and no. As I said before, I'd imagine that most of the price tag is to cover the cost of producing such hi-tech on a small scale, as well as fund itself for further development. But if that was the only way they keep it from the public, then why would they bother with the limited approval system? Although, $1.5k does prove that you're committed to this technology to help it spread and improve it.
Jeffery GARNAAS2 years ago
If the borg had the technology to assimilate, why wasnt their heads up display smaller like glass?
Benjamin Oien2 years ago
+Jeffery GARNAAS Glass is designed to be unobtrusive and convenient. IMO, it does that very well. For the Borg, natural eyesight might be considered inconvenient. It's possible that the single Borg eye-piece can house the optics/sensors to produce images with depth where everything is in focus, uniform quality (no blind spot or reduced peripheral quality) and much higher effective resolution. All allowing spacial computations to isolate targets regardless of whether or not they are employing camouflage. This tech already exists as light field cameras. Perhaps the Borg leave one eye unobstructed as a necessary backup.
What about shipping to FPO, AP to a us navy videographer/photographer/journalist?
$1,500? Is the standard of living that much better west coast? My PC was $400 and it plays LoL!

But mostly why should glass replace my droid? Maybe I just don't know enough about glass yet.
Drew Colpurs2 years ago
+Behinjamin Davis $1,500 is not the final price. This is the field testing model, it's supposed to drop significantly upon release. Also, it won't replace your phone. It relies on your phone for most of the storage and features like phone calls (since it doesn't have its own SIM card).
Devara Gian2 years ago
