iOS 7 Multitasking Refresh Bug

I'm having a very frustrating experience with iOS 7 on my iPad 2. When trying to compose in one app (say an email in Gmail), I'll sometimes need to switch via the multitasking feature to another app (say Google Search) to get a link or copy some text.

Too often when I switch back to the regular app, it refreshes, and my compose screen and everything that was in it has disappeared.

That is not multitasking! Anyone else experiencing this. (WARNING: All "get an Android" comments will be promptly deleted)

No idea, but I do know there are still issues with iOS7. I really need to get my iDevices again, been too long since I have played in the Apple ecosystem. I will reshare your post to a select circle who won't bash iOS.
BTW, Love your disclaimer. Good on you!

It's not limited to iOS 7. I've had this happen with iOS 5 and 6. For example, let's say I'm composing a tweet in the HootSuite app and I need to go to Safari to verify someone's Twitter name or grab a URL to paste into it. When I return to HootSuite, my post is gone... Very frustrating!
yep.. this "feature" goes back to at least iOS 5 ..  "You're composing it wrong" !

I have not seen this behavior - but have only used the Wordpress app for composing since upgrading to iOS7... is the refresh coming from the OS or the app, I wonder?

Following this. I recently got an iPad and have not upgraded yet.
doesn't matter +Nikol Murphy .. it still affects you and can be devastating as +Mark Traphagen points out..

Sadly, I see that now +Rand Wilson.

Yes, I'm experiencing this as well, and I share your frustration. I take precautions by copying any unsaved text to clipboard before switching apps.
Mark Traphagen2 years ago
+Simo Ahava the problem with that is I'm often going to another app to copy something from there, so I'd lose the copied text anyway. I suppose I could temporarily copy it into a third app, such as Notes, but that seems like a hassle that is unlikely to become a habit.

As others have said, iOS has long had this issue. In the most technical sense, iOS does not and never has multitasked, it does a sort of pseudo multitasking which unlike true multitasking can put your data in jeopardy, as you've seen. It's possible you're noticing it more because iOS 7 is pushing your iPad 2 harder than iOS 6 was.+2
iOS multitasking reminds me of WP7.5 "Tombstoning" I had that problem on my Focus and it would really get under my skin+1

I'm on iOS 6 still, on my iPad 2, and have experienced this same problem. For anything more important than a casual toss-off, I start composing in Notes, which seems to auto-save everything. Then when switching to copy-and-paste, nothing is lost. But you're right, Mark -- that is a hassle and shouldn't be necessary.

+Colin Walker yes, the Drafts app is excellent for that!

I compose and test everything in scrivener and then copy and paste to my blog or G+ which eliminates the hassle and the risk plus gives me a backup should G+ or WP fail+1

I'm glad I found this post because there has been very little attention give to this severe problem--yes, this is not even REMOTELY multitasking. On a Windows PC, every window doesn't refresh every time you go back to it. I don't remember this happening on ios6, at least for me, it's brand new. Twitter constantly refreshes--every time leave it and come back I've lost my place. Come on, Apple! Get your act together and fix this!!!

Just a note - after I typed this message I remembered that I had not upgraded to ios7.01 or whatever the second version of ios7 is called. I just did that, and it appeared to fix this problem, at least on Safari. I don't know about Twitter yet, will check in later and let you know.

Sorry about that!

I take that back, installing the new ios7 did not solve the problem. Apparently there is a timeout of a minute or so and when you go back to the open app or Safari tab it refreshes. Unsable.
Mark Traphagen2 years ago
Yep +Mike Wells that has been my experience
YES!!! It's not just me. Only since iOS 7 has it become so bad. True, under iOS 6 you'd eventually come across the app refreshing when you went back - but that was like a good 1-10 minutes. Now, if you're not back within the app in about 30 seconds, it's gonna refresh. And it teases you buy showing what you had open previously for about 1-3 seconds whilst it just sits there doing nothing. I switch between apps a lot to compose text, emails, pictures, etc and it's totally reduced my productivity. The worst part is that I can't go back to iOS 6 - and given that not many people are commenting about this (so a fix is unlikely soon) - so this has seriously pushed forward my thoughts on a move over to a Samsung.

You may not believe this but I stared at that picture for awhile just waiting for it to twitch or move in some way +Mark Traphagen

Hello there~ I have the same problem and just got a phone call from Apple, an engineer is helping me with it, and taking data from my phone! This tells me that they really care and are proactively trying to solve the problem! Let's all hope they will come up with something to fix it soon!+1

This "feature" been driving me nuts since I upgraded to ios 7. I've reset and it behaves for a while then an app will trigger the bug, and from then all the apps refresh on switching.

Would hope for a fix from apple by now. (Ipad 2 + ios 7)
