Yet another set of #googleplusupdates... Enjoy :-)
Sara McKinley originally shared:
Some profile & page improvements, per your request

We spend lots of time listening to your feedback, and today we're launching some profile and page updates that you've been asking for. These include:

- A new tab for your Local reviews. In addition to your photos, +1's and YouTube videos, there's now a place for all your Local reviews. Highlight your favorite restaurants, or hide the tab completely via settings -- it's completely up to you.

- An easier way to edit your info. The 'About' tab now consists of separate cards (like Story, Places, and Links) -- each with its own prominent edit link. As always: you can share specific fields with specific circles, or keep them just for you.

- Bigger cover photos, with a better aspect ratio. Cover photos are much larger than before (up to 2120px by 1192px), and they display in 16x9 when fully expanded. This way more images can be used as cover photos, and there’s more room for your selection to shine.

Everything's rolling out gradually, so check back soon if you don't see it yet. Once it’s live (at plus.google.com/me), let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Heh. Glad this was announced before Facebook's News Feed launch tomorrow :)+12
Great improvements! Especially with the cover photo, now just gotta wait till it rolls over to my profile (impatiently waiting... haha)
+Vic Gundotra I love it! "Per your request." It is so amazing that you guys not only interact on plus but listen and truly implement suggestions. Thank you all...+4

Whatever happened to the vanity URL roll-out??+16
This looks great, cant wait to try it out!

+Rob Herrera we are working on it. Sorry for delay!+29

+Vic Gundotra - Thanks for the response. Just hadn't heard any news about it in a very long time. Keep on being the best Google, love you guys :-)+3

Love the updates +Vic Gundotra ! Would be great to have a better "Photos from post album" where all photos from post go in to one album vs a bunch of little albums inside a big album, and a better way to edit, and delete photos from that album.
Israel Lai1 year ago
That's...too big? +3
+Vic Gundotra Has the ability to post from profile been removed? The screenshots seem to suggest so+1

Good update, +Vic Gundotra can we have something like this for communities as well.

Will there be any accompanying changes on the mobile web and mobile app side, +Vic Gundotra

I'm living Post PC (all Nexus) and have little idea what my profile is like on Desktop now =)

Does someone work on community features? I really really miss the possibility to move a post from one category to another as a community moderator...+2

+Vic Gundotra thanks for these updates, and I'm glad to hear that the vanity URLs are being worked on. Hopefully, there will be some kind of fair method of rolling it out so well established accounts don't have their identities usurped by some blue head account. A free-for-all Black Friday approach to claiming vanity URLs would be a disaster.
Liam Reilly1 year ago
That's a good point +Jim Gomes . I've been using and pushing Google+ since the field test beta. I'd hate not to get a vanity URL whilst some fresh, still wet behind the ears, new g+ account got one lol+3
Jim Gomes1 year ago
+Liam Reilly exactly. If the nymwars were any indication, the amount of howling over vanity URLs would be intense. Sadly, I would probably be one of them.+1
Sasa Kovacevic1 year ago
looks a lot like facebook timeline. and seriously, that huge image brings what exactly, except pushes the CONTENT lower. but it's not THAT terrible so i can live with it.
Mads Thomsen1 year ago
+Liam Reilly Then I deserve to have one too. Not for being popular, but for being here a long time. Anyway, I don't think many would want mine. plus.google.com/madsthomsen... I like....

+Vic Gundotra Loving the improvements. I'm happy I've made Google+ my main hub for everything I do; I even use local more now w/reviews!+5
Andre Tannus1 year ago
Awesome news! Congratulations to the whole team.
I like the direction Google+ is taking!
Liam Reilly1 year ago
My point was not about being popular, or simply having an account since the start. I could have created an account at the start and not used it like a lot of others did. But I didn't. I've used it daily. On the desktop and on mobile devices. I've pushed Google+ across all other social networks that I have accounts for. I constantly sing the praises of G+ and promote its wonderful features.  Maybe Google could do something to rank users based on usage/interaction with other members/counting number of inbound links etc to decide who is offered a vanity URL first? +1

It would be great if I didn't want to show the top 1/3 of my photo.  Why copy the dumb things Facebook does?  You have to scroll up to see the top of the photo when the page loads.+2
It's still there +Jean-Loup Rebours-Smith, I have the new profile and checked. +1
Good to know +Roberto Acevedo III Thank you :)

I see + oscillates between copying Facebook features and groping around for new ideas, but the overall result is amazing, especially when it comes to customizing your feeds. Content is awesome rich too.

The cover photo is so huge...
Cool
Very cool! Good job +Vic Gundotra !
Its huge, but I like it. Its a real cover now on my laptop.
subhankar sahu1 year ago
It's taking up the whole page, is it how its supposed to be ? Can't see any content other than  pic on my profile page unless I scroll....
Just rolled out on my profile, I love it. Thanks a bunch +Google+ team, keep bringing in the goodies :D
vinay c1 year ago
Cool :-) great job,.. looking forward for some more cool stuffs,..
+Vic Gundotra Why not use a photo that fills the left margin and the information placed on the right side also solve the problem of #whitespace.I understand they are trying to unify G+ with Youtube and facebook across this enlarging the size of its cover, but I think it would be best to give another type of change... is just my opinion ...
Paul Roustan1 year ago
When I load a profile, it doesn't show the full image, I have to scroll up to see it. Does that happen with anyone else? Or is it a handicap of the resolution of my screen?+2
Very nice +1
Jenny Montes1 year ago
Still not changing the method for choosing who we share posts with on the mobile platform? 6 steps if I want to share a post with one person is silly.
Naga Appani1 year ago
+Vic Gundotra - I think the cover is huge, it is occupying the entire webpage... I think it will be a good idea If users are given the ability to resize on their own interest.... Otherwise, great job! We wanted to see something magical that changes the way we use social networking site from Google, I feel G+ is half way through, looking forward for more!!!+2
Pablo Pérez1 year ago
If you're using a big screen resolution and full screen, the cover image is waaaay too big. Awful.+2

These bigger cover photos are gonna take some getting used to.

Todd Tabern1 year ago
Gotta be honest +Vic Gundotra. It's pretty bad... When I go to someone's profile and it starts on the Posts tab I expect to see posts, not just the uppermost portion of their most recent post. I shouldn't have to scroll down or click the Posts tab to see more. The cover photo defaults to taking up way too much real estate. I think you guys need to scale it back a little. I'd be happy if it defaulted to taking up like 50% of the screen, but right now it's darn near 75%!
The new hovercards, on the other hand, look very nice!
+4
+Vic Gundotra  The gigantic cover page makes no sense. While I can see what could have been the thinking behind it, it's not working. The rest of the profile page looks much better.+6

Todd Tabern1 year ago
The huge cover photo adds no value. All it does is pushes the content down and further out of view. Why are we getting changes like this but still no features that I know many have submitted feedback for, like improved search functionality?
I have a hard time believing that people have really been asking for huge cover photos that take of a vast majority of the screen.
+3
+Paul Roustan I think it's default (to help users show there's more underneath the big picture)
that's why I love G+, always fresh
George Koklas1 year ago
The cover photo is way too big, it just makes everything else not important and out of view. +3
Greg Hesp1 year ago
This is great, however I'd love to know which of the videos in my videos tab are shared with who (likewise with photos)

It says they're only visible to people they've been shared with, but then fails to list anywhere obvious who they've been shared with.  Any ideas?

Awesome!! Simply awesome!! What I like about G+ is they make everything so simple and beautiful. And that's what fb is doing the opposite, complicated and filled with ads! Keep up the good work Google :-)

Steve Gosselin1 year ago
Am I the only one who misses the original flip book functionality?

And +Vic Gundotra  did you really have to copy the facebook timeline layout for the 'About' tab of the Profile?
+1
This is not 10x.  You guys can do 100x better than this.  All you're doing is copying Facebook, and not in a good way.  I want to see G+ be the best.  I'm really disappointed, probably more than I should be, but that's only because I'd like to see you guys be the best social platform to go along with the best online community.

If you want to fix this stuff, I'm willing to help.  If you want to copy someone, copy Medium.com.

And honestly, Google has so many fans it could make any change and get tons of positive feedback regardless of the changes.  I have to imagine it's hard to get valuable feedback.

+Vic Gundotra i'm not sure what resolution you guys are targeting this? On a 14" wide screen display on my laptop with a res. of 1366x768, i can hardly see anything. There's too much wasted space, too much padding all around. I end up scrolling too much. Layout needs to be tightened up and font size reduced.+3

+Vic Gundotra the banner is way too high. a perfect size would be between home (first tab) to 7th (tab) more tab.....
I am not sure about the new change.. it does look shiny and at first cool, have to see over time. ONE CHANGE I'm excited about that nobody has mentioned, not even you +Vic Gundotra (unless I missed it) are the new HOVER OVER displays.

I think I like the vertical look but LOVE that you can CHAT/Hangout/email right from that box. Nice +Matthew Leske:)
Now just add a + button into our GPLUS chat so we can click it from our chat to instantly mention the people we chat with easier!

Michael Harries1 year ago
The size of the cover images are a bit silly. It can almost fill up my full screen, and does if I scroll up.
Also, why is the central column of text so narrow?  There is unused white space either side.

That said I think the majority of changes are great!

The circle picture frame on our profiles works well for faces, but not as well for all pages/organizations/companies. It would be nice to have the option to choose a circle or a square.+2

Horrible!!! How can I change the cover photo back? It's way too large, I don't like the information on top of it and b) hate the round avator for the profile picture. Does not work at all. How can I change it back please????? It's horrible.+3

+Vic Gundotra  The cover photo is insanely huge. Please give options to go back if we dont like it this big.+5
Smitesh Kharat1 year ago
+Vic Gundotra  The update is really awesome, except the HUGE cover photo. The cover photo looks even more abnormally large on my 12" Chromebook.  The size of that really needs to be cut down. Please, change that to something smaller.+2
They can't really change the size, it's set to scale.  Which makes large animated GIFs super awesome to lag some people's browsers on slower computers.
Ronnie Bincer1 year ago
I hear that the size for the new G+ profile cover pic is the same size as YouTube's Channel Design update which I hear is rolling out soon (i.e. tomorrow? 3/7/13). Sounds like more GooTubePlus integration.+2
+matthew rappaport I'm with you! The new hovercards are the best, Look what I did with mine! :)+1
+Vic Gundotra I've tossed this out before as an idea but maybe it's time for global themes for user types:
- photos
- writing
- videos
Or just add custom or advanced settings where we could turn off face tagging during every upload or something less common.

Huge cover photo is ridiculous. Seriously, this is supposed to be an improvement?+2
+Vic Gundotra +Sara McKinley +Google+ this seems very nice... thanks for the update... however, now the screen real estate has reduced when watching the profile page... bit cramped up!! i guess the top search box if reduced a little can help....+1
Rich Smolen1 year ago
I'm typically a fan of G+ upgrades, but the size of the new cover photo is just overbearing. Definitely regret updating our company page today. Any chance we will get the flexibility to use an image that is more rectangular than a 16:9 aspect ratio?+4

A unified messaging service would have been a nicer update! :)+1

how to resize the large cover banner. you have to crop the image in the photo editior

The messaging service point is a good one +Michael Harries .

I do think it's bizarre that I can send messages to my G+ friends using the mobile app, but I can't do the same using the website.  I also dislike having both Talk and Messenger.

+Rohan Blake Great! Worked.
Selim Cinek1 year ago
You absolutely overdid it with the cover photos :P I mean its good to have a joice here to go that big, but at least leave us some room with the aspect ratio. Fixxed ratio isnt the best idea in my honest oppinion.
+Vic Gundotra Hi Vic, the update is awesome, but as many have pointed out, the cover picture has something wrong.
I noted page starts a little scrolled down, so the picture won't be 16x9 unless user scrolls up to see it fully expanded, but it's not made clear to the user.
For example when you're cutting the original image there's no indication of what shows on page load and what shows when fully expanded.

Imagine user is reading someone's profile and press home to scroll back to the top: instead of the reduced cover picture, he will see it expanded. Really not intuitive. It'd make a lot more sense to show expanded view on click, for example.

You've got to remember that most computer screens are 16x9/16x10, and that the O.S. taskbar, the Browser tabs, address and bookmarks bar take a lot of vertical space. If picture is too tall, it won't show anything but it.
Now the question becomes, does Google actually admit to doing something strange, or do they introduce new changes that they just want for internal reasons, but call them reactions to feedback?

Or do they stick with the don't look back whitespace "plan?"

I just really have to question what percentage of changes are actually changes in response to feedback.  It's strange to see what things have been supposedly looked at and changed in response to feedback, and what things have not.
Mads Thomsen1 year ago
This is an old thread now, but I'm gonna respond anyway. If you look a little further up in the thread, it's explained how to make the cover picture smaller again. It's easy. I did it. Then, if you look at #toyota , you can see why this new picture size makes sense. That's an awesome way to compose the cover picture.
Something interresting is that the page starts a little bit scrolled down when you load it. They all seem to do.
As long as the picture narrows up when you scroll down, I don't mind. You can always press F11 for more space.
Nice update... I would like to see "Apps" as separate tab in profile page, instead of buried under "About".

+1's tab interface makes it useless. Card-like grouping of +1s (like this: http://google.com/now/topics ) could be useful.

Huge cover photos with a fixed size and scale = No good! Please bring back the option to edit the cover photo and allow us to crop the photo down if we wish. Taking away features is not cool. Forcing us to use only a cropped portion of an image for our cover photo is not cool. Come on Google+, be cool!
