To watch on YouTube, visit: NASA Connects Space Station and "Star Trek Into Darkness" Crews in a Google+ Hangout

-----
The director, a writer and some actors in the film "Star Trek Into Darkness" will join NASA astronauts as we host a Google+ Hangout On Air from noon to 12:45 p.m. EDT, May 16, about how work aboard the International Space Station is turning science fiction into reality.

Participating in the hangout will be NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy, who currently is living and working aboard the space station; astronauts Michael Fincke and Kjell Lindgren at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston; director J.J. Abrams, screenwriter and producer Damon Lindelof; and stars of the film, Chris Pine, Alice Eve and John Cho. The participants will ask questions of each other and take questions from the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City (home of the space shuttle Enterprise), the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, and social media followers.

Ask a question prior to or during the event by posting a comment here or on Twitter using the #askNASA hashtag.

The question is: when someone's weight here in Earth is 55kg, in the moon is anyone's weight 15kg? Other: is it possible that the space warp exists? Does the Enterprise go in the warp until 11? Greetings from Brazil!
Also, will it ever be possible to create a force field like in the Star Trek movies and original series to protect the space station from flying debris or the atmosphere?  Will it ever be possible to create a ship as large as the Enterprise that isn't stationary?

Hey, I have a few questions from my friend Catherine, who wants to be an actress, for Ms. Alice Eve: how different is acting in a movie than acting in a play, ow much are you allowed to ad-lib or deviate from the script when filming the movie, and how did you start your acting career?

I was able to see the "Star Trek: Into Darkness" in IMAX. In my opinion, THE BEST!!!! Even won a t-shirt, by answering a trivia question. My question to the actors will be - Being in the Star Trek universe now, Do you think that the human species can adopt the philosophy of Star Trek?

Will future space stations consider having a main computer to speak to and give commands to like in the Star Trek series?

Hi! ;)
In the movie, the enterprise goes with lightning speed but the inmates don't experience an opposing force according to newton's law. This is vulnerable problem when we move with speed. What are the scientists in dis area thinking of it as we need to upgrade ourselves and travel at lightning speed. ( for NASA scientists and astronauts).

OK, someone had to ask a UFO-ish question, right? So, in the first scene, when Kirk and Spock leave the natives on the planet and the natives look at them as gods and draw a picture of the Enterprise and bow down to it, is that a reference to the Nazca lines and other ancient art, and do you (NASA astronauts, Abrams, et al...) believe in the ancient astronaut theory here on Earth? :) Thanks

#askNASA
One of the most limiting factors with space exploration is propulsion or lack there of.  With liquid and solid fuel rockets, every step counts in the grand scheme of things but, we are going nowhere fast.  As a Canadian I am just as proud of NASA and its achievements as any red blooded American and whenever NASA is subject to budge cuts, it hurts.  I know there are experiments going on with anti matter, the hadron collider, as well as the warp drive theory being retooled. These are all important steps to getting out into deep space.  I am curious what will be the next major form of propulsion and how far off are we from achieving light speed or near light speed propulsion?  Will a new form of propulsion be available when the first astronauts go to Mars?  Is returning to the Moon and then on to Mars still on the table as mandated by Bush administration or has that changed?
Chadwick Adams

So upset I can't join the Star Trek premier because I have a class at the time....this discussion would be my alternative to get hyped about the movie. My biggest question for the event is what is NASA's plan to shorten space travel time...realistically speaking? Is there any draw back to it? Also, how would NASA increase the length of stay in space for human?

My question, is what steps would I, as a 25 year old artist with little history in advanced mathematics or science, be doing right now if my goal for the future (near or as long as it takes) is to get to space, and be involved with the advancement of space exploration? I am taking online math courses on khanacademy.org currently, what else?

#askNASA  Hi! I am a total Trekkie and astronomy nerd (in fact, I'm the only sophmore in the senior Astronomy class at my high school), and I was freaking out when I heard that Star Trek: Into Darkness's release date was moved up to the May 16 (today), which is my 16th birthday, aka best birthday present ever! My question for NASA is: which technology found in Star Trek may be possible in the future of NASA? And for the cast: with so many special effects in the movie, how hard was is to act around the effects and objects that would be added in post-production? Thanks so much!

StarTrek has predicted and even inspired some of todays technology, including such greats as the mobile phone, iPad, touch screens etc.  BUT... what do you astronauts actually believe is the possibility of Faster-Than-Light travel.  Is it a possibility given our current understanding of physics (either as 'warp drive' or wormhole drives or 'hyperspace') or is it just a pipe dream to which we sadly cling in the depserate hope we'll get off this rock some time soon?
