I anchor and report for KCCI 8 News

Kevin Cooney anchors NewsChannel 8's news weekdays at  5, 6 and 10 p.m.

He joined the station's production department while still in high school, began sports reporting in 1972 and moved into the news department full-time in 1974 after graduating from Iowa State University.  His early years on the air including covering hundreds of interesting people and places for Kevin Cooney Covers Iowa ("KCCI")

He's been anchoring KCCI's newscasts since 1982 -- after spending two years at KNTV in San Jose, Calif.

Kevin has covered many major events for KCCI, including the Flood of 1993 and the inaugurations of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Kevin interviewed President George H. Bush on board Air Force One, and he interviewed President Clinton on a flooded Fleur Drive in 1993 and in the White House just hours after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. He has interviewed President Barack Obama on the campaign trail and at the White House

Two of the most memorable stories for Kevin were the returns of hostages Thomas Sutherland and Terry Anderson after their releases in Lebanon in 1993. "We covered the story live via international satellite for the first time in Iowa broadcasting history. Terry was a classmate of mine at Iowa State and we worked together at KRNT early in our careers. And Tom Sutherland is also an ISU alumnus. His father-in-law was the founder of Living History Farms. It was a touching reunion to see these two men with their loved ones," Kevin said.

In 1999, Kevin won the prestigious Jack Shelley Award from the Iowa Broadcast News Association (IBNA) for his outstanding contribution to broadcast journalism in Iowa. In 1994, he received the James Schwartz Award for Distinguished Service to Journalism from Iowa State University.

His wife, Mollie, anchors KCCI's News at Noon.
