A New Contest Is Looking For AI That Can Fix How We Get Our News

"Digital media has seen better days. Russian bots run free while overtly-biased and misleading news drowns out real journalism on social media. Some believe artificial intelligence might be able fix it.
The problem? They’re not quite sure how. A new contest is looking for submissions from engineers, scientists, journalists, and the like to submit their ideas.

The AI Ethics Initiative, a research organization dedicated to developing AI that helps people, launched an open challenge for new ways that AI might be able to improve media..."

Thinking about thinking?
Thinking About Thinking

I have always believed that the three most SIGNIFICANT cognitive traits which maximise our ability to be resilient to life's challenges, to make sound decisions and to grow as a human being, are:

1: Self-Reflection - Thinking about your own thinking patterns.

2. Abstract Thinking - The capacity to understand metaphor, connotation, knowing beyond literal.

3: Critical Thinking - Logical & objective analysis, often through self-reflection.

"Metacognition, thinking about how you think, has been shown to help students improve their grades. Stanford University researchers published a new study that outlines a 15-minute thinking hack that led to an average improvement of one third of a letter grade for the participants."

"The research stems from the insight that while many resources are provided by educational institutions, students don’t always know how to use them effectively. Patricia Chen, a postdoctoral research fellow who led the study, hypothesized that if students were made more self-reflective about how they approach their studies and the available resources, they could do better."

"“Actively self-reflecting on the approaches that you are taking fosters a strategic stance that is really important in life,” she said. “Strategic thinking distinguishes between people of comparable ability and effort. This can make the difference between people who achieve and people who have the potential to achieve, but don’t.”"

Yep. Because clearly something has to be done!
The #Ocean Cleanup began its journey to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch from San Francisco on 9/8/2018 after years in development. Hope it works, now humans need to do their part and reduce the use of the devil #plastic. https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/science/2018/09/08/ocean-cleanup-steam-out-sea-saturday-plastic-pollution-quest/1229694002/
