There is it, finally, my new blog post! Along with some website improvements. After several months of silence due to wedding preparations (yes - I'm actually using it as an excuse), having felt extremely guilty for abandoning my blog for for so long... Now hopefully will keep this up. Let me know what you think!

My latest blog post is dedicated to the workshop I delivered at Leiden University last week, aimed to inspire the students to follow their dreams and ambitions.

Work hard or work smart? Or both? And what does it mean exactly - long hours, making volumes, or efficiency and speed?
I'm exploring these questions in my recent blog post.

I'm sorry it's like this ...

So we just dance
So we just dance
So we just dance

When we say study, it means work,
When we say work, it means money,
When we say money, it means spending
When we say credit, it means debt,
When we say debt, it means bailiff,
We agree to being in deep sh*t
When we say love, it means kids,
When we say forever, it means divorce.
When we say family, we say grief, because misfortune never comes alone.
When we say crisis, we talk about the wold, famine and then third world.
When we say tiredness, we talk about waking up still deaf from sleepless night
So we just go out to forget all our problems.

So we just dance… (X9)

So you say that it’s over because the only thing worse would be death.
When you finally think you’ll make it, there’s more and more!
Ecstasy means a problem, problems or just music.
It grabs you by the guts, it takes hold of your head and then you pray for it to end.
But your body is no heaven so you block your ears even more.
And then you yell even louder and it goes on…
So we just sing
Lalalalalala, Lalalalalala,
So we just sing
Lalalalalala, Lalalalalala,

So we just sing
So we just sing
And then only when it’s over, then we dance.
So we just dance (x7)
And well, there’s still more (x5)

I just love this singer  -
Stromae, Formidable
English lyrics:
Terrific, terrific
You were terrific, I was terrible,
we were terrific,
terrific,
you were terrific,
I was terrible,
we were terrific.

Hey, baby, oops : young lady,
I swear I won't hit on you,
I am single and since yesterday, damn it,
I cannot have children, but anyway that's not... Hey, come back here!
Just a few minutes, come on, I did not insult you, I have my manners,
and I'm quite a bit plastered and for guys like me
you have other things to do, you could have seen me yesterday,
when I was

Terrific, terrific
You were terrific, I was terrible,
we were terrific,
terrific,
you were terrific,
I was terrible,
we were terrific.

Hey, take a look at yourself, think you're Mr Handsome
just because you got married?!
This is but a ring, man, don't get carried away,
she'll dump you like they always do,
now about the other girl, did you tell her?
I can tell her if you want, that will settle the matter,
and I'll tell the kid too, if you have children,
you just wait for 3 or 7 years, and then you'll see
how it's

terrific, terrific
You were terrific, I was terrible,
we were terrific,
terrific,
you were terrific,
I was terrible,
we were terrific.

Eh girl, oh, sorry: boy,
you know, in life there are no good and bad guys,
if Mom is a pain, that's because she's afraid to be a granny,
if Dad cheats on Mom, that's because Mom is getting old, what else?
Why the blush? Come on, come back, boy,
and what's wrong with you all
staring at me like I was a monkey, eh?
Sure, you're such a bunch of saints,
you bunch of apes!
Give me a baby monkey, he will be

terrific, terrific
You were terrific, I was terrible,
we were terrific,
terrific,
you were terrific,
I was terrible,
we were terrific.

One could argue there are several measures in the study of languages that can express how close or far any two given languages are apart. One could, for example, look at differences in grammar. Alternatively, one could look at similarities in vocabulary.

Apparently, if we compare the most commonly used words of (some) European languages, the following diagram is obtained:
