We, school systems, must be proactive with online learning, not reactive!

A lot of my friends, fellow teachers, professors, superintendents, etc. have been hacked on social media the last few days. Here is what I suggest and you can take it or leave it, but I hope it helps someone.
The problem is that people keep pushing on links that are "phishing" for your passwords and usernames. Here is what I want you to do from now on:
1) Change your passwords so you use several different passwords. Try to use a capital and a number in each password. I use a coding system like famous movie stars that I like "Denzel1" Denzel is my favorite actor, so he is #1. Kevin Bacon is my 8th favorite actor, "Bacon8" and that password is to only be used for shopping websites. You can do it however you like. This is my training coding system, not my real one. LOL!
2) Never click twitter links on a computer. Do them on a mobile devices. A hacker can't get much off a mobile device. Honestly, look at the post before clicking. If a post says "Click this link" or "Hi! Click this link". That is a trick!
3) Look at the link and if you click the link and a "lock" doesn't appear in your web browser when asking you for a password, social security number, etc. Don't trust it. Lastly, if you ever need to put in your username and password, go directly to the website. Twitter.com, pnc.com or target.com. Hackers make a fake site that looks like the official site and they steal your username and password. This is called "handshaking" in our business. They steal your information, while logging you into the official site. Meanwhile, the now can use your information to log into everything in your life.
4) Change your password and never use that password again. It has been added to a hackers' dictionary, which means that they will use that password to try your other accounts. I hope that helps.

One of the big things to know is that if you have all of your web passwords go back to a single "lost password" email address, someone just needs to hack that one...so think about where your "lost password" emails go, esp. for financial sites.  Thanks for the message here!

Online Learning: Being proactive, not reactive!
   I wrote
this post for my friends of the Illinois Education Association, as I attend
the IEA conference in Chicago. Yesterday, I heard the Virtual Learning
Task Force make the statement that "students need face-to-face

I am husband, father, techie, teacher, game player, urban traveler, fantasy football organizer, movie junkie, public transportation nut, displaced Floridian and just a big teddy bear!!
Introduction
I am Kai and I am a teacher of ten years. Recently, I took a job to teach teachers how to use technology in the classroom. Though I live in Elgin, IL., I am a true Floridian. I miss Florida and its people, but I love my wife and her love is in Illinois. We have a wonderful 2 year old son.

I have everything I could want, but the one thing I do wish for is to have a big group of friends, like I had in Florida. Moving to Illinois has killed my social life and I would love to have a few new friends. Otherwise, life is great!
Bragging rights
Nothing to brag about, because I want to be just like you.

Awful! I had a 3:00 appt., turned in my keys and sat down. I watched people getting served right away who came after me. Probably, no appt. I noticed that the service tech spent the whole 22 minutes while I sat there talking to a man about buying tires. The man left buying nothing and my keys and paperwork sat at the desk. Then when I got up, the service tech wanted to run my paperwork back, while serving another customer. I left. Did I mention they fixed my tire last week in Elgin? I bought tires for my wife's car from this place before and was happy. Not anymore. I will take my car elsewhere!

Nice facilities, newer machines and just a nice club all around. Traffic is the problem for this club.

Things started out rough here and I asked to be moved to the Hilton across the street after the way some of the staff treated me. My A/C was broken on the first day and the desk did not call me when supplies were dropped off at the desk. She apologized and made things right. She was very nice and it turned things around. This is a beautiful hotel, but I am not sure the staff warrant this hotel to be a four or five star hotel. Otherwise, the view is breathtaking and the pool is refreshing. For $280.00 a night, wifi should be FREE!

Pros: Excellent bagels and pricing. the staff is very nice and always make sure I have enough supplies to throw a bagel party. I have never had to wait very long. Great bagels. Great place to relax and they have free wi-fi. Cons: The only complaint I have is that they sell bagels in the afternoon for the same price they sell freshly made bagels. By the afternoon, they are hard and will not last until the next morning. Maybe that is my fault for buying them at night for the next morning.

Ok so let me tell you why I am so mad at Sears. I dropped off my lawn mower for repair at the Sears in West Dundee in March to be repaired. The guy told me it would be $89.99 flat pricing for parts and labor to fix my lawnmower. So I paid it and left my lawnmower. Then two weeks later, my wife received a call from Sears in Hoffman Estates that it would cost an additional $50.00 to fix the lawnmower. That is not what I was told, but my wife went ahead and approved the expense. Months go by and we hear nothing about the lawnmower. Then we finally decide to call the Sears in West Dundee and ask about the lawnmower in July. Some guy told us it is just sitting over there, but he didn't work in the department. So we called back and have not been able to reach anyone in that department. At this point, I am so furious, I do not even want the lawnmower back or to even step foot in another Sears store! How is this a way to treat a customer. This is not the first time with Sears.

I have never and I mean NEVER seen a library like this! Just awesome! My wife and I bought a house in Elgin, because of the library. The highlights are the private study areas, reading room with a view of the river and a fireplace, teen room and the Kids' center. You can even check out artwork for your house. One morning I was sitting, waiting for the library to open and teenagers were going crazy when they opened the gates. They were running into the library on a Saturday morning! My greatest experience with this library is that I called and asked for a local babysitting list. The librarian explained that they did not have a list, but she would check on a list. She called me back a day later with a full list of a babysitters from Judson University. How awesome is that? You have to go for yourself! It is the best library in the nation!
