We'll be running a little symposium on the future of journalism at RIT on 29 JAN, with some interesting folks joining us in person and via the wonders of cheap video hardware/software/streaming-services... our hope is to either serve and persist it via UStream, or to run a "Google+ Hangout on the Air" towards the same ends.

Our basic stance goes something like this:

We think humanity is still in the stage of trying to figure out the right questions to ask about journalism in the digital age, and that anyone who claims to have the answers already is probably quite wrong. We think we are in a position analogous to someone in 1513 thinking about the future of print. Exploring some of the issues together and figuring out some of the right questions to ask is what this symposium is about.

The mobile world is on fire right now and has been for quite some time. We've been pushing the boundaries and redefining what all sorts of things mean to people and how they consume them.

This past year we offered a course titled Mobile Experiences for Tourism in which we looked at the developing mobile world and what that meant for the area of tourism. When you look at the tourism field you're looking at attraction, people experiencing the unknown, seeking questions, enjoyment. Mobile phones suddenly give us access to a vast amount of tools, people, and information. How can we use this technology to enhance and compliment the field of tourism without it intruding on the natural experience?

These are the things we explored in the MET class. We are fortunate to continue our collaboration with Rochester's own Eastman Kodak, The Eastern National Park Service and Edinburgh Napier University, UK to research, design and produce a tangible experiences for the mobile digital tourism domain.

This spring MET took a look once again and has produced a 2.0 experience. To hear about the first incarnation, what it was about and the experiences it took to get there, as well as see the 2.0 prototype in action, come visit us this Friday in Global Village from 12-3.

Come see what our students are cooking up in this exciting and growing field.

Where: In front of the Global Village at RIT
When: Friday 4/13/2012
Time: 12pm - 3pm

ANNOUNCE: Symposium on the future of journalism in the digital age

29 JAN 2013 at RIT, free to the public, and we plan to use either G+ Hangout on the Air or UStream to stream and persist the sessions for later viewing.

we'll have some pretty high-powered and interesting people from journalism as presenters, and we are focusing on finding the right questions rather than waving our hands in the air and declaiming "we have all the answers", and we want the audience to engage in spirited dialog with our presenters.

we'll have an interesting range of speakers, from both media organizations and academia... please do join us

"bigger and meaner" is right, and what you do not know may hurt you

Get out your digital pitchforks and torches....it's time for Round #2 with Hollywood and the Content Owners. Round #1 was SOPA/PIPA. Round #2 is CISPA and it's bigger and meaner than its previous *PA siblings were!
