Gizmo's Freeware

It's sometimes useful to be able to edit an audio MP3 file on your PC. For example, you might want to remove the applause from the end of a downloaded track, or want to increase the volume, or standardize the volume. Acoustica MP3 has a completely free version available which should do nicely for basic editing.

If you've never tried using your PC to edit an audio file, and you now think that it might be fun to try, here's a way to do so without having to download or install any software.

It seems to be my week for recommending great alternatives to the accepted freeware standards. A couple of days ago I told you about Acoustica, a great audio editing freeware which I think is better than Audacity. Now, here's another. This time it's all about network monitoring.

A security hole in many major browsers called "logjam" is being reported. The attack makes use of a weakness in a cryptographic algorithm used to make connections secure. If you go to the site reporting the exploit, it will tell you if your browser is vulnerable to the attack. Keep checking to see if updates are available. In the meantime, be aware that your supposedly secure browsing may not be secure.

If you run a small business, you have probably toyed with the idea of sending out emails to potential customers.
While it's very easy to put together a plain-text email which contains the bare bones of the information you want to impart, adding some sort of design in order to impress current and potential clients is harder.
Thankfully, there's an answer, and it's surprisingly simple as well as slightly cunning!

Although the internet is often portrayed as a single global system, in practice it's not really anything of the sort. Because it's relatively easy to identify someone's approximate location by means of their IP address, and because it's very easy for a web site operator to find the IP address of a visitor, many sites deliberately block users from specific countries.

Have you ever switched off your PC after a 4 hour evening session, and wondered what precisely you've been doing with it all evening?
It's been a couple of years since I wrote on these pages about a program that can help you answer precisely those questions, so I decided it's about time that I took another look at a rather neat product called RescueTime.

Over the years, the file manager in Windows has been persistently inadequate. Microsoft’s failure to come up with something better has been a long-time deficiency and annoyance in Windows. However, there are plenty of alternate file managers available, both commercial and free. A selection of the best free ones is discussed in this Gizmo review and one of the favorites is Multi Commander.
