Since I first wrote in this column about Astro Grep a few months ago, there has been a series of updates to the program. So whether you're already a user of this excellent utility, or you have yet to discover it, it's worth knowing about the latest release.
Astro Grep is a program which scans some, or all, of your hard disk to search for a specific word or phrase. It searches the full content of files, rather than just the filenames. And it doesn't need to build an index, which saves on hard disk space usage. While the lack of an index means that Astro Grep isn't as fast as the built-in Windows search, it's much easier to use. And more powerful.

If you're about to type private information (password, bank account details etc) into a web site, it's always a good idea to take a glance at your browser's address bar first. Does the address of the page start with https rather than just http? If so, it means that the site is encrypted and so it's much more difficult for a hacker to be intercepting your data.

As you probably know, Microsoft has said that licensed Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 systems will be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10. But now they have gone further. It seems that just about anybody can get Windows 10 for free. This is the RTM (release to manufacturer) version, not just the beta.

I sometimes need to be able to search my entire PC to find the particular file which contains a word or phrase. Not just in the filename, but somewhere within the content of the actual file. And while Windows does in theory contain such a feature, I've always found it less than intuitive when I need to use it.

Had existed as "Labs" option for six years; no other major webmail service offers it.

Digital Attack Map is a web site which shows you, via animated symbols on a map, just where the current large-scale DDoS attacks are coming from, and where they're going to. So if you want to sit and watch lots of coloured symbols move from China to America, for example, and wonder in awe at the sheer scale of the attacks, this is the site for you. It is, to be fair, a fascinating watch.

When Microsoft abandoned the Start Menu in Windows 8, there was a rush by software developers to create programs that would bring back something like the Windows 7 Start Menu. Our pick from the numerous free offerings was the well-known Classic Shell. Microsoft is bringing back the Start Menu in Windows 10 but, as described in a previous article, it is rather different from the Windows 7 version. If you want to try Windows 10 but wish you could have the old Start Menu, your wish has been granted with the just-released version 4.2.2 of Classic Shell.

It depends on how it behaves on final release +Piyush Paliwal, it's not every person that actually likes the modern apps within the start menu.

It's a good thing, to me and I know to many others, that the start button AND the start menu is back, but it's not back (the start menu) like it was before.

Some will like it, some won't, and an app like Classic Shell will be able to make both sides happy.

For my part, the modern apps in Star Menu is not a feature I want since I don't use modern apps at all, so it's useless to me and takes valuable space in my start menu. I'll try it, but if I don't use it, I'll install Classic Shell, yes.

It's only an option, we don't have to go crazy about that. Like myself, so 5 years now I always replace Windows Explorer with Directory Opus because it suits my needs. I replace Internet Explorer with Google Chrome, suits my needs. Same thing here.

The final release of Windows 10 will start to hit PCs at the end of July, and will be available to almost everyone as a free upgrade. A good place to start understanding some of the new and different features in this version is to check out a book by well-known journalist Ed Bott, called "Introducing Windows 10 For IT Professionals".

When Microsoft dropped the Start Menu from Windows 8, the chorus of protests was so loud that the company had to backtrack. In Windows 8.1 a very small beginning was made on reinstating the old favorite and now in Window 10 the Start Menu is back. However, it is still not the Start Menu we all were accustomed to. Since this feature is one that will be important to many people in deciding whether to upgrade, here are some details about what the new version of the Start Menu does and how to customize and use it.

If you have a web site, whether for yourself or your business, you need to know that it's always available and that it's running at full speed. Because if someone can't find your site, they'll simply go to someone else's.
Web Page Test is a neat web site which will test a web page of your choosing (yours, or someone else's if you want to compare performance). Simply head to the site, and type in the address of the page you want to test.
