There hasn’t been a spike in nursing graduates like this in the U.S. since the 1970s.

Of course, you do have the "nursing school factories" in the Philippines adding to the number of nurses we have in the U.S. (problem there is that, if you are in the line-up for surgery, lying there naked under a thin blanket, you have people running around you shrieking in Tagalog - aren't hospitals supposed to be quiet?-- and it becomes as fearsome as being in a similar situation in a foreign country where you don't speak the language) We might have a dip in American students signing up for nursing school, but people from foreign lands with "high school nursing school diplomas" (Poland and other European countries) are coming in by the boatload  - I think they must get a special visa, because they are all over the place (I teach ESL, and I'd say about every 5th student I meet is a nurse in her/his country and is learning English to take the exam to be a nurse here)
