Mike Brookes, OCS senior project manager, is one of nine people in the UK to have been accepted as a Fellow of the Asbestos Removal Management Institute (ARMI). In the rigorous training and assessment process, Brookes demonstrated his knowledge and competence of working with materials containing asbestos, as well as exemplary standards of health and safety management.

Due to its link to respiratory disease and cancer, asbestos was banned from use in the UK in 1999. Yet, as far back as the Ancient Egypt and Greece, where asbestos was first discovered, mined and named, there are records outlining an awareness of its risks.

So why did construction workers and shipyard builders continue to use it for so long, when all the warning signs were there? Were we just convinced that our ancestors were right all along when they called asbestos the “magic mineral”?
