Unexpected events on a long journey...
The crew of the tugboat hauling the last unflown space shuttle external fuel tank to California reports they have rescued four passengers from a fishing boat that sunk off the coast of Mexico.

Nah, they definitely shipped the last unused shuttle tank off to California recently.

Great overview of the RS-25 and why it's being used in the SLS, along with a detailed comparison to other engines such as SpaceX's Merlin.
The RS-25 powered the space shuttle for three decades, and will soon be used on the Space Launch System. Is it still the Ferrari of rocket engines? A deep dive on performance, reliability and the politics of rocket science.

Great explanation of Graham's Number...head explodes.
Graham's number is so big, we need a whole new set of tools to even discuss it.

Pretty interesting property of prime numbers, but here's something I never knew:

If Alice tosses a coin until she sees a head followed by a tail, and Bob tosses a coin until he sees two heads in a row, then on average, Alice will require four tosses while Bob will require six tosses, even though head-tail and head-head have an equal chance of appearing after two coin tosses.

+Julie Cochrane it's safe because the methods that involve two prime factors have no requirement to be adjacent primes.

I like how he slipped this gem in:

Suppose, for example, the intent is to observe a particular feature, perhaps the bright center of Occator crater, the lonely, towering mountain Ahuna Mons, the fractures in Dantu crater or artificial structures that definitively prove the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence, utterly transforming our understanding of the cosmos and shattering our naive perspectives on life in the universe.
More than eight years after leaving Earth behind for an ambitious deep space adventure, the Dawn mission has now collected all of the data originally planned. Chief Engineer and Mission Director Marc Rayman brings us an update.

Is the British government’s response to a naming contest tyrannical? Or the very definition of the democratic process?

Meanwhile, in Pittsburgh...
If you watched the growing feud between Austin and San Antonio unfold this week, you might have seen this coming, but on Saturday, Austin Mayor Steve Adler made it official: We're at war. A taco war. "I come to you this morning with some grave news," he told a group of hundreds of University of Texas volunteers during the opening ceremony to the school's largest community service event of the year. "The city...
