This wisit to Barefoot Coffee is unusual, perhaps unique, in my four years of branching out to independent coffeehouses.

The roaster, Barefoot Coffee, used to have a cafe in Santa Clara, where Chromatic Coffee now sits, but they closed it and no longer operate their own cafe, just a coffee truck. Instead, they licensed their name to this cafe, and as far as I can remember, this is the first artisanal coffee cafe that I've been to that was not actually operated the roaster itself.

I'm guessing that some of the lower-end indies, not necessarily third-wave or artisanal, allow franchising, but as far as I know, the higher-end coffee roasters operate all their cafes.

I could be wrong, though--I'd have to inwestigate.
