I have had two bad haircuts out of the three times I've been, all with different barbers. The first time was a good cut and was worth the average city price of $20 (now $23). The next two times were both bad cuts and uncomfortable experiences. Joe is a nice, but is his cut. He was rushing his cuts and still took an hour. I don't get anything crazy, just short on the sides and an inch on top or short with scissors. He somehow managed to cut my top with scissors almost as short as my sides with buzzers. On top of this, the chair was broken and crooked, and my barber asking me questions rapid fire the entire time. I wouldn't doubt that there are some good barbers here, but two bad haircuts in a row is enough for me and the increased price of $23 is too much. Unfortunately there are no decent barbers in university city and will have to drive further out to find a good place.

The staff are both polite and extremely capable barbers. I have gotten my haircut there for over a year now and appreciate the attention to detail that I have received each time.

I am new to the Philadelphia area, so I took some time researching good barbers on Yelp. After researching for some time, I stumbled upon Juan at South Street Barbers. About a month and a half ago, I decided to have my first hair cut in Philadelphia with Juan. Let me tell you that after I had my hair cut, my friends (both guy and girl friends) could not stop commenting how good my hair looked. I had to look more closely in the mirror to double check what was all the fuss about. It just looked amazing! The first time, I came with one suggestion and he made some adjustments that made my hair look a lot better than I expected. Today (10/28/2013), was my second time to have my hair cut with Juan and decided to go with something different. Again, he did an excellent job and already got some great compliments about how great my hair looked. There are several things I really like about how Juan works. 1. Attention to detail (perfection) Juan is very meticulous and really makes sure that your hair looks well, not just from the front, or the side, but from all angles. This is very important for a good haircut. In my past experience, barbers would just cut my hair and it would only look good from one angle, but not the others. The average barber, pays little attention to how the back part of the hair is going to be cut. Moreover, he styles the hair (with gel) in the manner I would normally have it and then makes necessary adjustments. None of the barbers I went to before has done this. 2. Communication. Communication is key. Sometimes our expectations of what we would like our hair to look like does not conjure the same image in the mind of the barber. I usually bring pictures of other people whose haircuts I like. Sometimes these people don't have the same hair type as I do and Juan will point that out to me and tell me how he can work around it or would make a suggestion about something that will work. It has worked twice really well. 3. Respect. He does treat his clients with respect. As a client, we should also pay our due respect and give the barber flexibility to work his magic. I see hair cutting as art where it's good to let the barber work his art. I will definitely recommend Juan. For $25, you truly get a great service and an excellent clean hair cut.
