I have going to this office for a while now, not as often as I should but who really like to go to the dentist? Overall the experience has been good. They tell me what I need done and I decide if I want to or not. The last time I had work done Dr. Hansen told me what she thought I needed and after starting work she determined that my tooth was not cracked all the way and could just be fixed. So instead of a large bill and time it was a little money and not much time. She really could have continued on and I would have been none the wiser. When I go for semi-regular cleanings I pretty much get the same hygienist (I think her name is Roberta) and she is great, always very nice and seems to know what she is doing. I did not rate five stars because perfection is elusive and dynamic and thus very hard to achieve.

Nice waiting room. Novice, but nice, dental assistants.

Go elsewhere. This review deals exclusively with the Durham location; I have no experience with the other locations. I originally went to Sunrise Dental becasue they had Saturday appointments, which was all I could fit in to my schedule. The dentist that did the weekend appointments (just weekend appointments) was, in my experience, very competent and fair. She, however, left Sunrise Dental. My experience with Dr. Hansen was not nearly so positive. I found her to be inconsiderate and only moderately competent. She recommended significant work that neither my previous dentist nor my new dentist thought needed done. My wife's experience with Dr. Hansen was much the same. My wife, who usually has a better opionion of people than I do, didn't care for Dr. Hansen's demeanor either. Also, Dr. Hansen recommended that ALL of my wife's fillings be replaced. Again, neither her previous dentist nor her new dentist agreed with that recommendation. Also, since switching dentists, I've learned that Sunrise Dental charges $35 to send records to another dentist. Let me tell you, I was just thrilled to learn that Sunrise was basically trying to charge me $70 for switching to a decent dentist. Obviously, I would not recommend Sunrise Dental to friends. The office and facilities, however, are quite nice.

I had two visits to this office. During the first visit, a receptionist (found during second visit) washed my teeth, and Mr. Mark performed the oral eximination. The magic Mark took two minutes to see my teeth, and told me that I need to do cavacity fillings at more than 20 places (In fact, both my previous and current dentists told me that I needed to fix only 3 teeths). One possible reason is that they know my insurance covers the cost. I still visited the office the second time to see Dr. Hansen because I saw some good review about her, and needed to fix two teeth. Dr. Hansen added one more place to fill without my agreement. She seems not as capable as reviewed, and she broke my gum. She cheated me that the nerve on my last tooth died, and root canal or extraction is needed. But my current dentist filled my last tooth without much trouble.

I'm pretty surprised by the negative reviews, but I'm chalking it up to being online reviews (that is, only those with bad experiences take the time to write anything). I went to Sunrise on the recommendation of a friend when I needed an impacted wisdom tooth out. I have severe dental anxiety and had avoided seeking dental care for an embarassingly long time, so this was beyond stressful for me, but Dr. Hanson and her staff were understanding and patient with me as I freaked out over the necessary extraction (which was ultimately performed in about 30 seconds flat - very skilled). I have since begun to catch up on the work I need to have done and I have been impressed with both Dr. Hanson and Dr. Modlin, both of whom I've seen. They have been honest with me about what work can be delayed until I can financially swing it and what work is more time-critical, been very understanding of my anxiety (and more than willing to provide nitrous at no additional cost to help manage it), and both have made themselves easily reachable by phone after hours and on weekends if I have questions or problems. I will concede that Dr. Hanson can be somewhat disarmingly direct in her way of speaking at times, but I actually appreciate that. I hate having the honest details of my treatment kept from me, so I'd much rather have her speak her mind and treat me as an equal than sweetly lord over me like so many dentists and physicians I've seen in the past. Your mileage may vary, I suppose. But my experience at Sunrise has been easily the least stressful dental care I've had.
