The first paper, Strengthening User Authentication through Opportunistic Cryptographic Identity Assertions (http://goo.gl/RYPqY), is the result of work conducted by Google, University of Washington and Rice University. The paper presents a user authentication system for the web called PhoneAuth, which provides increased security assurances for familiar password-based login experiences. The second paper, Manufacturing Compromise: The Emergence of Exploit-as-a-Service (http://goo.gl/U5uYU), is another industry-university collaboration, and looks at the the way in which drive-by downloads are relying more heavily on commercial exploit services.
