my sense is that while it can be dismissed as an unintentional epitaph for an age gone missing, there is value hidden in the nostalgia. indeed, what do we want to take with us as we leave the print era for destinations unknown?

+bob stein Yes, unheimlich. I guess I'd argue that rather than "singing" she's doing an impression of Billie Holiday - just reproducing the sounds - which, after all, any CD player can do as well (which is obviously not to denigrate her singing talent). But I think if she were doing an equally impressive simulation of, say, Miley Cyrus or Madonna or even Maria Callas it wouldn't have the same disturbing effect because our response to Billie Holiday is so entwined with our knowledge of her personality and history that the sense of authenticity of the performance is so important. Watching it made me think a lot about the tension between authenticity and artifice

very very disappointing. a wine bar with only 3 white wines by the glass and not many more reds. my fish was so over-cooked as to be tough and the mushrooms it was served with were cold.
