interesting meditation on the mixtape as a pivotal element in the shifting media landscape
In the ways we created and consumed mixtapes, we find the earliest glimmers of the social media experiences of today

wondering what people thought of Leon Wieseltier's piece in this weekend's NYTimes Book Review.
http://www.nytimes.com/…/bo…/review/among-the-disrupted.html
my sense is that while it can be dismissed as an unintentional epitaph for an age gone missing, there is value hidden in the nostalgia. indeed, what do we want to take with us as we leave the print era for destinations unknown?

+bob stein  Yes, unheimlich. I guess I'd argue that rather than "singing" she's doing an impression of Billie Holiday - just reproducing the sounds - which, after all, any CD player can do as well (which is obviously not to denigrate her singing talent). But I think if she were doing an equally impressive simulation of, say, Miley Cyrus or Madonna or even Maria Callas it wouldn't have the same disturbing effect because our response to Billie Holiday is so entwined with our knowledge of her personality and history that the sense of authenticity of the performance is so important. Watching it made me think a lot about the tension between authenticity and artifice

A sobering article.  Makes me worried for my mom, who's a few years away from earning full pension benefits at her job.

provocative and well-worth the read.
To paraphrase bell hooks: there is little point making women equal to men when not all men are equal.

everyone will have their quibbles with this list, but overall it's smart and worth the attention

It's a thought provoking list, Bob!  Since I feel that way after reading it online, my answer to Number 25 must be no . . . X-D

not sure why the recommendation is only to 20-somethings; this is a terrific list worthy of attention to people of all ages http://bit.ly/JE4x7w n
These funny, crass, and addictive sites are must-reads for any 20-something who cares about books.

20 years ago Douglas Adams created a wonderful 2-minute audio to promote the debut of Voyager's Expanded Books. Sophie Rochester of the Literary Platform in London had the lovely idea of commemorating Douglas by hosting a competition to animate the audio. The winner was announced this past friday. Stephen Fry and I were two of the four judges. http://bit.ly/zky694

very very disappointing. a wine bar with only 3 white wines by the glass and not many more reds. my fish was so over-cooked as to be tough and the mushrooms it was served with were cold.
