A Night to Remember was released 60 years ago today. A fine British drama, and probably the best screen adaptation of the Titanic disaster. Based on Walter Lord's book, directed by Roy Ward Baker, and produced by Belfast-born William MacQuitty (who like me, was a former pupil of Campbell College).
That book and film were deeply influential to me as a kid. I never met MacQuitty, though I did once appear in a documentary alongside Baker. Little did I know that those influences would cross again in the 2000s as I set about photographing the decaying Harland and Wolff shipyard during my degree project, and more recently filming in the former paint hall, and giving guided tours on Titanic's history in Belfast's Titanic Quarter.
For most of us with ties to Belfast, somewhere along the way there's a family connection to the shipyard, a yarn about a familial tie to the Titanic itself. Today alongside the tragic tale, we recognise the story as one about the country's great industry and innovation. Its something we're proud of.
If you've only ever seen James Cameron's film, do yourself a favour and check this out.
