Is Google Building a Movie Studio in L.A.?
With +Google Play hawking Hollywood movies pretty much every day on G+, it should come as no surprise that they've dropped $120 Million for a 12-acre parcel of land in LA's Playa Vista neighborhood, a location that was previously tagged for development into a huge movie studio complex for Dreamworks.
To reinvent industries takes ground-floor infrastructure that the incumbents won't build - think +Google Fiber or Google's ginormous 9th Ave offices in NYC near the centre of the U.S. media and ad markets - and the ability to test small and build rapidly. The new parcel in LA is zoned for space that could lead to up to 6,000 office workers at the site, and has some large buildings probably suitable for movie studio work.
Lots of things could come out of this, but with +Netflix and other streaming media companies taking most of the signal during media viewing that would otherwise go to Google's databases, it makes sense for Google to start developing original programming for Google Play Movies & TV of a more traditional mould than is likely to surface from +YouTube's new LA studios. If nothing else, it will be a hiring magnet in LA for tech/media talent, which is bound to change a number of paradigms in the process whatever Google winds up doing. Watch this one carefully.
