Prayer to Find God During Divorce-March 24, 2018

Dear God- I realize that litigated divorce focuses on blame and taking advantage of the weaknesses and imperfections of others. As a collaborative divorce attorney, I help couples focus on solutions and strengths at a very difficult time. I am grateful to be a member of a highly trained team of legal, financial and parenting professionals who empower couples to reach peaceable settlements which meet their individual and shared interests, goals and concerns and which protect their children from harm.

God, in my peacemaking and in service to You and my clients, please help me to assure them that You are always present for everyone in the process of divorce.

May Your light shine in the darkness of divorce so that the couples we serve can find You.

Collaborative divorce professionals, like me, use interest-based negotiation techniques to reach settlements. There is give and take, bargaining and compromise in the process. But, as my Brother in Christ, The Rev. Canon John W. Newton, wisely said in a sermon, You, our God, do not engage in interest-based negotiation with Your children. You do not bargain with us. Your holy presence and love are unconditional gifts to everyone as part of Your grace.

To those divorcing couples who are gravely troubled that they are breaking their covenant with You, please let them know one inexhaustible part of Your redemption--though sadly their marriages come and go, Your love is forever. Amen

Prayer to God to Remove Our Resentments - March 18, 2018

Dear God - You brought us into the world as an intentional act of creation. We each began whole and complete and ensouled with a perfect spirit. Over time each of us have had hurts, wrongs done to us or those we love or things did not go as we planned. We are burdened by the weight of the resentments we carry. The love we want to give and the life we want to live are trapped in bitterness and sap our strength to fulfill the purpose for which You created us.

Today and every day, not just in Lent, please help us turn over our resentments and lack of forgiveness to You. Your love is stronger than our human weaknesses. Please carry this burden we cannot shoulder. Freed of our resentments, we can lift up our arms and our hearts to You and see the light of Easter Sunday.

If You forgave us from our sins, why cannot we forgive others?

Lord, please remove the load of our resentments so we can take steps in our walks of faith with greater joy, trust, and happiness in You. Amen

If you like this prayer, please share.

Prayer in Thanksgiving for the Promise of Spring - March 11, 2018

Dear God - As I drove out of Spring Valley Village to start our family Spring Break vacation, I saw that Spring had broken from the Earth. Following the hardship of Harvey and the dark and dreary cold days which followed, the promise of new life was evident in the magnificent blossoms around me.
Behind the wheel, my thoughts centered on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Between death and loss. Between ashes in the earth and hope and life eternal.

I reflected on the death of my mother Lucile, five years ago this month and how she was such an exquisitely beautiful flower in Your Kingdom. I grieved for the loss of her in the physical. But, I knew that the love in her for me lives forever now in You and the Holy Spirit.

I give thanks to You for the promise of Spring--for in the cascading of bridal veil, in the glory of the blossoming red buds, azaleas, mountain laurel, gardenias, daffodils, and the Katy Road rose along Tres Palacios Bay. In the sweet smell of wisteria blooms, I am reminded that life goes on.

Although every human life ends, there is a spring, a holy well. A resting place in which I too will one-day flower forever in the Glory of Your eternal love. Amen

Prayer to God in Thanksgiving for Rodeos, Cowboys and Heroes- March 2, 2018

Dear God- Just look at me sitting at the Dad’s Club in Spring Branch with my heroes, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans with Trigger beside us when I was 7!

Dale’s kiss on my cheek remains as sweet and magic as this memory so many years ago. That moment of light shines bright against the dark days and months I had spent in the hospital because of polio. This light-filled moment let me know that, although paralysis was dark and dreary, joy, hope, and wonderful things were still possible. So many bad things have been transformed by Your love into good for me.

Every year since then, when the Salt Grass Trail Riders and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo comes to Houston, I am thankful unto You for the enduring blessing I received from You that day with my cowboy and cowgirl heroes. In addition to the comfort of You being with me in prayer as I struggled to recover from polio, I had my spirits continually uplifted by the western heroes of the time including the likes of Annie Oakley and the Lone Ranger and Tonto.

Thanks for being a good and great God. My God who is big enough to allow his servants, like me, to worship You and still have living heroes to inspire and sustain me.
God, You are my armor of light. But, thanks to You, rodeos, cowboys, and heroes kept my young hopeful heart in the clouds where some dreams can come true. Amen

Prayer in Thanksgiving for a Little Blond Angel, a Wedding and Redemption

Heavenly Father- In a dream just before sunrise on Friday, February 16, a beautiful blond girl in a white dress of linen and lace visited me in my sleep. I thought it was just a dream. But, as I was dressing for work the telephone rang. The call was from my cousin, Margaret. I learned that her mother, my Aunt Midge, Margaret Hiebeler, had died 10 minutes earlier. I knew then that You, my Savior, had sent the girl in Easter white to send me a message of redemption that Aunt Midge had made her way back Home to You.

Last Tuesday, I shared the message I received from You at Aunt Midge’s services at First Presbyterian Church in Bryan, Texas. Later that afternoon at Forest Park Westheimer, Reverend Foote commended her spirit to You. Her body, which You had ensouled with the Holy Spirit, was buried. In prayer we thanked You for the blessings we all had received from her life, love and unbounded service to You.

From the photograph of Aunt Midge, You can see she was a stunning brunette. Yet, as a little girl in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, she was adorned by light-filled flowing blond hair. Sadly, her earthly life was taken from her and us as a result of the Long Goodbye, the disease of Alzheimer’s. Although her body now lies in a grave at Forest Park Cemetery, Aunt Midge’s life and love made possible many sacred memories for others including me.

During the graveside services, I recalled a special moment Aunt Midge made possible. It took place at the 2003 wedding of her granddaughter, Laura. Aunt Midge hosted the wedding in Bryan, Texas at her home amidst the green lawn and blooming flower gardens in her back yard. The image You see in the photograph is of my daughter, Catherine, her husband, Reniel and their infant son, Tristan, my first grandchild. Were they not a beautiful family so full of love, hope, and happiness? Reniel had just been promoted to assistant manager at the Interstate Battery Store on Interstate 10.

Sadly, just a few weeks later, three masked gunmen exited an SUV. Brandishing weapons and evil they shot him at 9:30 pm as he stood by his car on 18th Street in the Heights in Houston. The gunmen took something far more valuable than the 2 dollars in Reniel’s wallet and the shark tooth he wore around his neck for good luck. They stole a father from a son and a husband from a wife.

The killers were never brought to justice. But, that wrongdoing and Midge’s death do not dampen the precious memory of that magical wedding time together which Your love and Aunt Midge made possible.

I give thanks to You for sending me that blond-haired angel in my sleeping, for Your message she delivered, for the memory that will never be forgotten, and for the photograph that will be forever treasured.

Most importantly, I thank You for sending Your angels to lead Midge and Reniel safely Home.

Please guide Your talented servants to find a cure for Alzheimer’s and to end senseless violence.

Your love is more powerful than hate.

Your love is stronger than any bullet.

May Your Grace help Americans find a way to change our society to be more of a reflection of Your love on Earth. Amen

Prayer for Seventeen Candles, Children of Light - February 19, 2018

Heavenly Father, on Valentine’s Day
In Florida, the Sunshine State,
Seventeen of Your children were taken away.
First responders soon arrived
To pick up the students and teachers who died.
One madman brandishing hate
With evil sealed their earthly fates.
But, Your love was far deeper, everlasting, and great.
Once the sun had set on this tragic night,
Seventeen candles in darkness shined with Your light.
Hatred and evil did not win this day
As Your love and Your angels
Led them to You and their Savior’s way.
As these words find their place on paper with pen.
Please help America to find ways
For this not to happen again and again.
There must be more that we all can do
To protect the children who come to us from You.
Seventeen candles, children of light.
Seventeen spirits, holy and bright.
Seventeen souls illumined by Christ.

God, please hold these candles in Your Hands.
Please show us the way to end school deaths by guns.
Seventeen candles,
Seventeen spirits,
Seventeen children,
Saved by your Son.
Amen.

If you like this prayer, please share.

Prayer in Thanksgiving for Nick Foles and the Courage of Faith-February 11, 2018

Dear God -Today, I give You thanks for one of Your children, Nick Foles, the Eagles’ quarterback who lead his team to a Super Bowl Championship last week.

It is very common for football players and teams to ask You in prayer to lead their teams to victory, as if You take sides in sport competitions. However, what is remarkable about Nick Foles is the way his faith in You prepared him for the biggest game in his life and which gave him the courage to be the best Nick Foles You created him to be. To prepare for the game, Nick Foles attended seminary classes in the off season. When he took the field in Minnesota, he placed his entire trust and faith in You for him to be the best Nick Foles he could be. With the armor of light You gave him, he exhibited calm wisdom and trust in You. As a result, in the game he flawlessly executed every play and every pass. At the end of the game he held the Super Bowl Trophy in his hands, but he gave You, his Father, all the glory.

Please help me and all Your children follow Nick Foles’ example of what each of us can achieve when we place our complete faith and trust in You. For in that way, each of us can win the biggest race in our walks of faith. We can win something much bigger than any Super Bowl. One day we can win victory over death and join You, Your Son, Jesus Christ, and all Your Saints, Angels and Archangels in Heaven.

God, please support Nick Foles in his calling to be a minister after his football days are done. Amen

If you like this prayer, please share.

Prayer to Empty My Vessel and Fill It with God’s Love - February 4, 2018

God -Today, I thank You for my body, the vessel which is ensouled with the perfect spirit You gifted me at birth. Lord, please help me empty the vessel I am of my need to prevail or win, or to overlay my will on others or to satisfy my own needs. For in that empty place, room is made to fill my vessel with more of Your love and less of my self-importance. I pray that in that empty place there will be more of You and less of me. In that empty place may Your Kingdom always Reign. May I no longer be preoccupied with who I am but rather whose I am and to better serve You now and forever in Christ’s name. Amen

God – Today, I give You thanks for Your precious Son, Jesus Christ. On the cross, the human part of Him experienced extreme pain and suffering. He suffered five fatal wounds and resulting death. In His wounds and crucifixion He died a human death but was granted eternal life from You, His Father.

In witnessing Christ’s wounds and crucifixion, we, Your children, see that our sins are forgiven as part of Your amazing grace. We too are granted eternal life.

The poet Thoreau wrote that the lakes are eyes to measure the depth of Nature. Likewise, Almighty God, please help me view my human wounds from illness, loss of loved ones and broken relationships to be my eyes to see the depth of Your love for me. To see Your angels near me. To see Your Holy light in dark times. To see the path I need to walk to do Your will and walk in Your ways. Amen.

Prayer to Be One with God, One with Love - January 19, 2018

God - As with all Your children, I have had the opportunity for my heart to be pointed to You through prayer. I have had the invitation to see You face-to-face in the darkness in experiencing illnesses, losses or wounds in my life or in witnessing the suffering of others. Your Son, Jesus, came face-to-face with You in the solitude of prayer in the desert and in witnessing the mistreatment, lack of compassion and care of the people by the self-righteous religious order of His time.

Lord, please help me to be one with You and Your Love Your Son, Jesus, represented to the world. May my prayers, thoughts, words and deeds always reflect Your Love and Light to others. Like Your Son, Jesus, may I be Your ministry of healing and forgiveness to others. Amen

If you like this prayer, please share.
