At Sunflowers we welcome parents to the nursery as often as you wish, especially if you are breast-feeding or would simply like to have an extra cuddle during the day.

At Sunflowers we respect that each baby's needs are different and we will follow your child’s individual routine as much as possible. Any information from parents regarding routines will be followed closely, so that a relationship can be developed quickly and easily with each baby making the transition from home to nursery as painless as possible.

We operate an open door policy throughout the nursery which extends to the kitchens. Please feel free to pop in to talk with either of the housekeepers, see the products we are using and discuss any of the meals and the ingredients.

The food is primarily from Asda although the children do walk to the local green grocer to get fruit or vegetables for a specific meal. We buy good quality products with high meat content, either from the good for you range, the extra special range or the organic range at Asda. The bread is always wholemeal and a good quality brand like Hovis. The housekeepers keep an eye on the products we use and check the contents of the products for salt and any other additives which may not be good for the children.

Superfood in Hull

Salmon - Salmon is a super food because of its omega-3 fatty acid content. Studies show that omega-3 fatty acids help protect heart health.

Beans - Beans are loaded with insoluble fibre, which helps lower cholesterol, as well as soluble fibre, which fills you up and helps rid your body of waste. They are also a good, low-fat source of protein, carbohydrates, magnesium and potassium!!

Tomatoes - Tomatoes contain high levels of lycopene which is responsible for protecting our bodies from prostate, lung and stomach cancers. It is best to cook your tomatoes before you eat them as this makes the lycopene more easily absorbable, although we do provide the mini tomatoes as an alternative to fruit at snack sometimes. Tomatoes also contain potassium, Vitamin C and beta carotene, which is essential for the immune system and helps keep skin healthy.

Eggs - Eggs are nutritious, versatile, economical and a great way to fill up on quality protein. Eggs contain 12 vitamins and minerals, including choline, which is good for brain development and memory.

Berries - Cranberries and blueberries are extremely rich in antioxidants which help to protect the cells in our bodies from damage and therefore from diseases like cancer. Among other things they are also an excellent source of Vitamin C and soluble fibre.

Broccoli - Broccoli is a rich source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C and bone building Vitamin K and has plenty of fibre to fill you up. It also boosts the immune system.

Whole Grains - Whole grains include brown rice, millet, oats and wholegrain bread. The complex carbohydrates and fibre slow the release of blood sugar providing a great slow energy source. Fibre can also help to prevent constipation, encourages the growth of ‘friendly’ bacteria in the gut and aids the removal of toxins from the body.

Turkey - Turkey is one of the leanest protein foods and is low in calories, making it an excellent healthy food choice. Turkey also contains selenium which has been shown to inhibit cancer development, improve the immune system, and aid in the metabolism of our thyroid hormone.

Searching for Superfood in Hull?

We have recently been doing a lot of work on our menus and have devised a four week plan which is not set in stone by any means! We like to encourage the children to try as many different tastes and flavours but if they decide they do not like a meal we will change it accordingly.

The new menu incorporates foods that are nutrient dense. That is, they have more nutrients per calorie than most other foods. These foods pack such a nutritional wallop and possess such powerful health benefits, that they are referred to as “super foods”.

Superfood in Hull

At Sunflowers we believe it is never too early to establish a healthy eating habit. We advocate a common sense, well-balanced diet with a menu incorporating poultry, fish, dairy products, breads and cereals and lots of fresh vegetables and fruit. Sugar is not excluded from the diet but used sparingly. Both nurseries have a housekeeper who prepares all our meals and snacks on the premises.

Sunflowers Day Nursery - Day Nursery in Hull

Over the past 20 years we have done lots of fundraising in the nurseries with the main focus being for children who are worse off than our own. Some of the charities we do bun stalls for or have dressing up days for are constant in our annual calendar for example, Jeans for Genes, Happy Kids Children's Charity, Children in Need, Red Nose Day, Dove House Hospice, Toddle Waddle and the Meningitis Trust. However, we have expanded our fundraising to include any charity we feel may be invaluable for any of us in the future, such as Pink Day for Breast Cancer Awareness.

We have raised some fantastic amounts at Sunflowers for charity. A big event was the Kilimanjaro climb in 2009 of Maddy Cardwell and Alice Rowley, both babies of Sunflowers in 1985. They climbed the mountain in Africa with their Mums and raised a tremendous £10,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust. The local unit at Cottingham benefitted which opened in December 2011.

The following year saw a Sunflowers Team aged from 16 to 50 jump out of an aeroplane and raised £6,000 for the local Children's Hospice in Grimsby.
