#Winning
In a major vindication for Edward Snowden -- and a blow for the national security policy pursued by Republicans and Democrats alike -- the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled Thursday that the National Security Agency’s metadata collection program is unlawful. This is the most serious blow to date for the legacy of the USA Patriot Act and the surveillance overreach that followed 9/11.

An occupation becomes a race or religion.
The legislation would treat any perceived 'crime' against police officers as an act of hate and add another 5 years to a person's sentence because of it.

Statistical models are great except when they fail.

We apply statistics to a mental model. I would not blame statistics. I would blame the mental model. Box was absolutely right. Only some models are useful. Correlation is not causation. This works two ways. When true causation exists, those with vested interests dismiss it with the phrase 'correlation is not causation'. Some times they camaflouge the absence of a mental model by building the future based on the past that is merely correlated without a true cause.

This has always been intuitively clear. Now, there is mounting empirical evidence proving it.

Introduction
All opinions are my own, unless you want to sponsor them like Acura sponsors The Onion.

Vietnam War refugee and Southern Gentleman.  I've always had an interest in computers, but it took a few years to realize you could make a career out of IT.  I started out in Marketing doing merchandising, mainly focused on auditing retail stores for compliance with the product placement diagram (called a planogram), but some temp assignments covering for the buyers of merchandise.  While temping in the buying dept at Federated Department Stores someone suggested that I'm good at this "computer stuff" and should do it full time.

I found my place in the Information Security community because I've always been a hacker at heart.  I've worked for several R&D companies in the Infosec space, but now I'm in the business world.  I'm not hands-on with the technical end of security, but I'm fully immersed in the Governance, Risk, and Compliance end.  I still love the technical aspects of Infosec, but since I'm not hands-on with it anymore I surround myself with technical people and do what I can to enable them.

I'm currently working on an undergraduate degree in Finance.  The type of business I work in invests in other companies my days are spent advising, auditing, and keeping our investments on track with GRC. Our risk is mainly financial exposure through our investments, so risk is partially Firewalls, IPS, & technology owned by our investments and insurance to cover the investment firm.

I'm a small business advocate and believer in creative capitalism.  One of my Management Accounting professors said that small business needs to copy the tricks of the trade that large business use. That means having an army of employees/consultants analyzing costs, making investments, swapping excess cash into foreign currency, etc.

I started a consulting firm with my best friend, analyzing and advising small business based on my professor's inspiration.  We started out doing quality, environmental, and Infosec work in the ISO 9001, 14001, and 27001 standards.  We have a passion for Lean and Green operations.  We believe that if you become Lean you can save enough money to go Green.  We're hoping to get more into financial advisement and operational efficiency as we grow our skills and our organization.

I'm active with animal protection and rescue organizations that are local.  I have several animal traps and do Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) work with Planned PEThood.  I have 6 cats of my own and 6 stray/feral cats that adopted me and my back yard.

I'm a practical, get it done person. Comrade Deng Xiaoping once said, "It doesn't matter if a cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice." I focus on the end result being a good one. That sometimes means disregarding all variables on the left side of the equation. Some people consider that cold and a handicap. I consider it an asset and a product of my Asian upbringing.

I love satire and could write scripts for The Onion given the opportunity.  Some things I post may be serious others may be satire.  People who have known me for 15 years still don't know if I'm serious or if I'm lampooning something.  It's your job to figure it out.  I love conspiracy theories, especially inventing new ones on the fly.
